Back to Basics—Research Design for the Operational Level of War

    Get PDF
The military-research criteria gap has been a challenge for researchers and planners. By examining the nature of war fighting and exploring how we could better assess, select, and evaluate research methods, we will create a more informed research process, ultimately leading to improved practices and more-credible outcomes

Diabetes in patients after kidney transplant

    Get PDF
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycaemia associated with inadequate insulin secretion or poor cells response to insulin. It can affect a large proportion of patients after a kidney transplant. New onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) is often associated with the use of immunosuppressive drugs including steroids. However, a significantly greater number of risk factors affect the development of the disease. The occurrence of diabetes after renal transplantation is associated with some limitations in society function and significantly impairs the proper conduct of such patients in outpatient departments. Frequent drug modifications may result in much faster impairment of the grafted kidney function and eventually loss of graft. This work aims to show the essence of the disease, to assess the risk factors of its development, and to show the role of diabetes education to help patient affected by the disease

Simulation of Light Propagation in Skin and Subcutaneous Blood Vessels

The VeinViewer, produced by the Luminetx Corporation, projects an image of subcutaneous veins onto the surface of the skin by using the discovery that near infrared (NIR) light passes through and transmits back out of the skin issue except at the blood vessels as a result of the presence of hemoglobin1. We aim to improve the function of the VeinViewer by using computational models to interpret changes in properties of the subject, such as skin pigmentation, and settings on the device, such as light frequency. We also look to decrease error, as a result of the geometry of veins and the multiple layers of skin. A finite element model implementation the diffusion approximation of the radiation transfer equation fulfill the role in part, but questions of boundary conditions and the description of the source need clarification

Previous research on same-sex parenting in Sweden has focused on families in which homosexual women and men share parenting tasks in so called multi-parent families. This qualitative study focuses on mothers who turned to fertility clinics for insemination with semen from permanently unknown donors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven mothers from seven same-sex families. Discourse analysis was used in order to explore the mothers’ talk about the donor. The result indicates two main constructions of the donor, the donor as a non-parent, and the donor as the other genetic half of the children. A certain tension is created between and within these constructions, wherein much of the talk of the donor distances him from the family and constructs him as unimportant. The mothers’ talk questions cultural discourses of the importance of genetic links between individuals, and positions both mothers as the parents of the children
