    Work design and life satisfaction

Work design, implicit or explicitly, has always been a topic of great concern in organizational theory and behavior. The purpose of this research was to contribute empirical evidence about the existence of a significant relationship between work design and life satisfaction. Work design has been related to a great diversity of variables, such as productivity, performance, work satisfaction and absenteeism, among others, but its contribution to the workers’ quality of life and life satisfaction has hardly been considered. Although it may seem obvious to some, this research contributes by asking if a relationship between work design and life satisfaction exists. The results, obtained through the Work Design Questionnaire and the Satisfaction With Life Scale, using a convenience sample of 104 Spanish workers, point in two directions: 1) Certain aspects of work design, such as social support, task identity, work complexity, autonomy in work methods and specialization, have a special relationship to life satisfaction; and 2) It is necessary to establish a balance between autonomy at work and the inevitable interdependence among the elements found in all formal organizations

In this paper we present our experience in reconstructive mitral valve surgery, from April 1996 to November 2002.We made a retrospective analysis of 107 patients (68% males, age 63±14 years) with severe mitral regurgitation and mitral valve repair. We found dyspnea class III-IV of the NYHA classification in 73% patients, and left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction < 50%) in 33%. Main causes of mitral insufficiency were dilated annulus (46%), and valve prolapse (36%).We studied some variables and analyzed hospital mortality, and long-term follow-up with survival and reoperation rate.Mean extracorporeal (ECC) and aortic cross clamp times were 140.85±46 and 116.5±42min respectively. We performed combined valve and/or coronary surgery in 60% of patients.Hospital mortality was 10% (expected mortality in Parsonnet score: 16%). All these patients had associated surgery. In the univariate analysis, the risk factors associated with hospital mortality were: low ejection fraction, COPD, diabetes mellitus, previous myocardial infarct, NYHA functional class, high expected preoperative risk, urgent surgery, long ECC and aortic cross clamp times, and associated surgery. In the multivariate analysis, we found three independent predictor factors associated with hospital mortality: ECC time, COPD, and NYHA functional class.Mean time follow-up was 25±20 months. Actuarial survival rate is 78% and 89% of patients are free of reoperation. Actually the majority of patients (89%) are in NYHA functional class I-II, and 75% patients have no or mild mitral regurgitation detected by echocardiogram. In our experience, isolated mitral valve repair is a low risk surgery. Hospital mortality increases with associated surgery (but the values are lower than expected in risk scores). Long-term follow-up (survival, reoperation rate) is good

Collaborative project-based learning aims to get students to take responsibility for their knowledge processes. The objective of this research is to analyze the viability of applying circular economy techniques for the design and development of products, through learning based on collaborative projects in industrial engineering. A survey was carried out between 2015 and 2019 on final year students of industrial engineering in Spain, from five different academic years. The responses obtained were analyzed statistically. The results indicate that the students who had more previous knowledge about the circular economy, valued its relevance for the design and development of products as well as for the practice of the profession more. In addition, it was demonstrated that the implementation of circular economy strategies in the design and development of products through collaborative projects allows the acquisition of different knowledge: eco-design, product planning and distribution, reuse, recycling, etc. Moreover, most of the students considered that the circular economy should be a complementary discipline and a transversal competence.European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and Regional Government of Extremadura (2017–2020) GR-1802

Changes in the Papez Circuit in early stages of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of demenMa. Neuronal and synapMc losses occur iniMally and predominantly in the medial temporal lobe structures including hippocampus, amygdala and thalamus, structures that belong to the Papez circuit. The integrity of the connecMons amongst them is essenMal for episodic memory, which is specifically impaired in AD. For this reason we have invesMgated the degeneraMon paRern of subcorMcal structures and its relaMon to early stages of AD, i.e. Mild CogniMve Impairment (MCI), both in the amnesic and mulMdomain types using structural magneMc resonance imaging (using a 3T GE scanner) and VBM‐DARTEL

This article describes the development and evaluation of a web system that aims to improve and reinforce mathematics learning in primary school students in Peru. Mathematics education is central to the school curriculum and it is important that students gain a solid understanding and ability to apply mathematical concepts in everyday situations. However, it is common for students to have difficulty learning and understanding courses in this subject, which can negatively affect their academic performance and self-confidence. To address this issue, a web-based system was developed that includes interactive lessons and personalized learning tools that are tailored to the individual needs of each student. The system also offers online resources and activities to help students deepen mathematical concepts and apply them to practical problems. To evaluate some drawbacks, a study was carried out with a group of parents of some primary school students in Peru. The results of the study showed that there is a worrying distrust of online study. Technology is set to revolutionize the way primary school students in Peru learn and study, providing access to a wide variety of digital resources and tools that can improve comprehension and academic performance. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of the web system developed as a tool to improve and reinforce mathematics learning in primary school students in Peru. The system provides a personalized and adaptive online learning platform that can help students improve their math skills and understanding, and increase their motivation and confidence

Linking of psoriasis with osteopenia and osteoporosis: A cross‑sectional study

    Get PDF
Psoriasis is a multisystem disease which has been related to vitamin‑D deficiency through chronic inflammation. This psoriasis‑related inflammatory state and vitamin‑D deficiency may induce bone mineral density loss. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship of psoriasis with bone mineral density, by comparing psoriatic patients with healthy controls and patients with osteopenia/osteoporosis. Psoriatic patients showed worse hip and lumbar spine bone mineral density levels than healthy controls (P = 0.001) and better levels than osteoporotic patients (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis demonstrated a negative association of age and a positive association of body mass index in hip bone mineral density in psoriatic patients. Bone mineral density levels in psoriatic patients are situated halfway between healthy controls and patients with osteopenia/osteoporosis. In addition, the higher body mass index in patients with psoriasis appears to confer a protective effect against further development of lower bone mineral density
