Proposal for the Measurement of Bell-like Correlations from Continuous Variables
We show theoretically that Bell-type correlations can be observed between
continuous variable measurements performed on a parametric source. An auxiliary
measurement, performed on the detection environment, negates the possibility of
constructing a local realistic description of these correlations
The construction of identities in narratives about serious leisure occupations
Engagement in occupation contributes to the shaping of identity throughout the human life. The act of telling about such engagement involves interaction based on symbolic meaning; the speaker constructing an identity by conveying how the occupation is personally meaningful. This study explored meaning in narratives told by people who engage in serious leisure occupations. A total of 78 narratives were extracted from interviews with 17 people who invest considerable time and other resources into their leisure. Analysis focused on the content, structure and performance of each narrative in order to explore meaning. The meanings were organised into a framework based around three dimensions: the located self, the active self and the changing self. Each dimension has facets that the individual might emphasise, constructing a unique identity. The framework offers a structured basis for conceptualising how occupation contributes to the shaping of the internalised self and the socially situated identity
Quantum trajectories for the realistic measurement of a solid-state charge qubit
We present a new model for the continuous measurement of a coupled quantum
dot charge qubit. We model the effects of a realistic measurement, namely
adding noise to, and filtering, the current through the detector. This is
achieved by embedding the detector in an equivalent circuit for measurement.
Our aim is to describe the evolution of the qubit state conditioned on the
macroscopic output of the external circuit. We achieve this by generalizing a
recently developed quantum trajectory theory for realistic photodetectors [P.
Warszawski, H. M. Wiseman and H. Mabuchi, Phys. Rev. A_65_ 023802 (2002)] to
treat solid-state detectors. This yields stochastic equations whose (numerical)
solutions are the ``realistic quantum trajectories'' of the conditioned qubit
state. We derive our general theory in the context of a low transparency
quantum point contact. Areas of application for our theory and its relation to
previous work are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Shorter, significantly modified, updated versio
Effects of different ageing methods on colour, yield, oxidation and sensory qualities of Australian beef loins consumed in Australia and Japan
This study investigated the effect of three ageing methods (dry, wet and stepwise wet-then-dry) and ageing time on pH, colour, yield, lipid and protein oxidation and eating quality of beef loins using Meat Standards Australia (MSA) sensory protocol with 900 and 540 consumers in Australia and Japan, respectively. Australian beef loins (Longissimus thoracis et lumborum) at four days post mortem were subjected to wet ageing (boneless; for 7, 21, 35 or 56âŻdays), dry ageing (bone-in; for 35 or 56âŻdays) or a wet-then-dry ageing method (bone-in; 21âŻdays wet ageing followed by 35âŻdays dry ageing). The pH was higher in dry aged than wet aged beef loins (PâŻ<âŻ.001). Instrumental measurement of surface colour of trimmed dry and wet aged steaks showed significant differences in a*, b* and hue angle. Weight loss was higher in dry aged primals (PâŻ<âŻ.001), however, total water content was similar among the two ageing methods (PâŻ=âŻ.934). Retail yield did not differ between 35 and 56âŻdays dry aged primals. Lipid (TBARS) and protein (total carbonyl content) oxidation between the dry and wet aged samples differed depending on the ageing time. When comparing the wet-then-dry and 56âŻdays dry aged samples, only pH and retail yield differed. Australian and Japanese consumers rated dry aged steaks significantly higher (PâŻ<âŻ.001) than the wet aged counterparts for tenderness, juiciness, flavour, overall liking and weighted palatability scores. The wet-then-dry steaks were also rated higher than the 56âŻdays wet aged steaks for flavour, overall liking and palatability within the Japanese sensory panels. The Japanese consumers also consistently rated all MSA sensory attributes lower (PâŻ<âŻ.001) than the Australian consumers. The results from this study show dry ageing provides a value adding opportunity for the meat industry in both domestic and export markets
Teleportation of continuous variable polarisation states
This paper discusses methods for the optical teleportation of continuous
variable polarisation states. We show that using two pairs of entangled beams,
generated using four squeezed beams, perfect teleportation of optical
polarisation states can be performed. Restricting ourselves to 3 squeezed
beams, we demonstrate that polarisation state teleportation can still exceed
the classical limit. The 3-squeezer schemes involve either the use of quantum
non-demolition measurement or biased entanglement generated from a single
squeezed beam. We analyse the efficacies of these schemes in terms of fidelity,
signal transfer coefficients and quantum correlations
Offenders' Crime Narratives across Different Types of Crimes
The current study explores the roles offenders see themselves playing during an offence and their relationship to different crime types. One hundred and twenty incarcerated offenders indicated the narrative roles they acted out whilst committing a specific crime they remembered well. The data were subjected to Smallest Space Analysis (SSA) and four
themes were identified: Hero, Professional, Revenger and Victim in line with the recent theoretical framework posited for Narrative Offence Roles (Youngs & Canter, 2012). Further analysis showed that different subsets of crimes were more like to be associated with different narrative offence roles. Hero and Professional were found to be associated with property offences (theft, burglary and shoplifting), drug offences and robbery and Revenger
and Victim were found to be associated with violence, sexual offences and murder. The theoretical implications for understanding crime on the basis of offenders' narrative roles as well as practical implications are discussed
Multifaceted intervention to reduce haemodialysis catheter related bloodstream infections: REDUCCTION stepped wedge, cluster randomised trial.
OBJECTIVE: To identify whether multifaceted interventions, or care bundles, reduce catheter related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) from central venous catheters used for haemodialysis. DESIGN: Stepped wedge, cluster randomised design. SETTING: 37 renal services across Australia. PARTICIPANTS: All adults (age â„18 years) under the care of a renal service who required insertion of a new haemodialysis catheter. INTERVENTIONS: After a baseline observational phase, a service-wide, multifaceted intervention bundle that included elements of catheter care (insertion, maintenance, and removal) was implemented at one of three randomly assigned time points (12 at the first time point, 12 at the second, and 13 at the third) between 20 December 2016 and 31 March 2020. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURE: The primary endpoint was the rate of CRBSI in the baseline phase compared with intervention phase at the renal service level using the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: 1.14 million haemodialysis catheter days of use were monitored across 6364 patients. Patient characteristics were similar across baseline and intervention phases. 315 CRBSIs occurred (158 in the baseline phase and 157 in the intervention phase), with a rate of 0.21 per 1000 days of catheter use in the baseline phase and 0.29 per 1000 days in the intervention phase, giving an incidence rate ratio of 1.37 (95% confidence interval 0.85 to 2.21; P=0.20). This translates to one in 10 patients who undergo dialysis for a year with a catheter experiencing an episode of CRBSI. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients who require a haemodialysis catheter, the implementation of a multifaceted intervention did not reduce the rate of CRBSI. Multifaceted interventions to prevent CRBSI might not be effective in clinical practice settings. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Australia New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12616000830493
Negotiating daughterhood and strangerhood: retrospective accounts of serial migration
Most considerations of daughtering and mothering take for granted that the subjectivities of mothers and daughters are negotiated in contexts of physical proximity throughout daughtersâ childhoods. Yet many mothers and daughters spend periods separated from each other, sometimes across national borders. Globally, an increasing number of children experience life in transnational families.
This paper examines the retrospective narratives of four women who were serial migrants as children (whose parents migrated before they did) . It focuses on their accounts of the reunion with their mothers and how these fit with the ways in which they construct their mother-daughter relationships. We take a psychosocial approach by using a psychoanalytically-informed reading of these narratives to acknowledge the complexities of the attachments produced in the context of migration and to attend to the multi-layered psychodynamics of the resulting relationships. The paper argues that serial migration positioned many of the daughters in a conflictual emotional landscape from which they had to negotiate âstrangerhoodâ in the context of sadness at leaving people to whom they were attached in order to join their mothers (or parents). As a result, many were resistant to being positioned as daughters, doing daughtering and being mothered in their new homes
