Reading Ability and Academic Acculturation: The Case of South African Students entering Higher Education
First-year students experience a range of challenges when transferring from secondary to higher education (HE) (cf. Darlaston-Jones et al. 2003, Leki 2006, Brinkworth et al. 2009). This is no different in South Africa, where deviating levels of preparedness for the demands of HE is a recurring theme (Slonimsky and Shalem 2005, Van Schalkwyk 2008, Scott 2009, Yeld 2009, Van Dyk 2010, Van Dyk and Coetzee-Van Rooy 2012). Weideman (2003:56) rightfully points out that the inability to understand and utilise appropriate academic discourse has a detrimental effect on academic success. Young students need to acculturate to the academic environment while adopting the academic community’s currency (Van de Poel and Gasiorek 2012a:294). With this article, we wish to contribute to the discussion by reporting on the academic language ability of one group of first-year students at a South African university, with specific reference to these students’ reading ability, on the basis of the following data: (i) individual differences in terms of learner characteristics (race, first language, gender, Grade 12 results, academic performance); (ii) self-reported reading preparedness; and (iii) reading profiles resulting from a valid and reliable academic literacy test, the Test of Academic Literacy Levels (TALL) and its Afrikaans counterpart, the Toets van Akademiese Geletterdheidsvlakke (TAG). The findings suggest that academic reading ability, as reflected in the test results, is indeed one of the salient contributors to academic success (as confirmed in the literature), regardless of social and individual differences, and that it needs to be supported in order for students to perceive their reading ability in accordance with their reading performance and be able to progress in their academic acculturation. A follow-up study will report on students’ awareness-raising about their own academic reading through the use of the validated scale for Perceived Academic Reading Preparedness (PARP) as a pedagogical tool.Keywords: Academic Acculturation, Academic Literacy, Academic Reading, Perceptions of Reading Ability, Academic Performanc

The impact of assistive living technology on perceived independence of people with a physical disability in executing daily activities:A systematic review
PurposePeople with physical disabilities often require lifetime support and experience challenges to maintain or (re)define their level of independence. Assistive living technologies (ALT) are promising to increase independent living and execution of activities of daily living (ADL). This paper provides a systematic literature review that aims to analyse the present state of the literature about the impact of ALT on perceived independence of people with a physical disability receiving long-term care. Materials and methodsDatabases Embase, Medline, and Web of Science were searched for eligible studies from 2010 or later. ResultsNine studies were included, of which seven qualitative, one quantitative, and one mixed methods. Quality was generally high. ALT enabled participants to execute ADL. We found six themes for the impact of ALT on perceived independence: feeling enabled, choice and control, feeling secure, time alone, feeling less needy, and participation. ConclusionsALT appears to impact perceived independence in many ways, exceeding merely the executional aspect of independence. Existing research is limited and quite one-sided. More large-scale studies are needed in order to inform care organisations how to implement ALT, especially considering societal developments and challenges impacting long-term care
Improving surface acousto-optical interaction by high aspect ratio electrodes
International audienceThe acousto-optical interaction of an optical wave confined inside a waveguide and a surface acoustic wave launched by an interdigital transducer (IDT) at the surface of a piezoelectric material is considered. The IDT with high aspect ratio electrodes supports several acoustic modes that are strongly confined to the surface, causing a significant increase in the strain underneath the surface. A finite element method is employed to model the surface acoustic waves generated by a finite length IDT with 12 electrode pairs and subsequently to study their interaction with an optical wave propagating in a waveguide buried in the lithium niobate substrate supporting the electrodes. The interaction can be increased up to 600 times using these new types of surface acoustic waves as compared to using a conventional IDT with thin electrodes. This result could find applications in improved acousto-optical integrated modulators
PSMA, EpCAM, VEGF and GRPR as Imaging Targets in Locally Recurrent Prostate Cancer after Radiotherapy
In this retrospective pilot study, the expression of the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) in locally recurrent prostate cancer after brachytherapy or external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) was investigated, and their adequacy for targeted imaging was analyzed. Prostate cancer specimens were collected of 17 patients who underwent salvage prostatectomy because of locally recurrent prostate cancer after brachytherapy or EBRT. Immunohistochemistry was performed. A pathologist scored the immunoreactivity in prostate cancer and stroma. Staining for PSMA was seen in 100% (17/17), EpCAM in 82.3% (14/17), VEGF in 82.3% (14/17) and GRPR in 100% (17/17) of prostate cancer specimens. Staining for PSMA, EpCAM and VEGF was seen in 0% (0/17) and for GRPR in 100% (17/17) of the specimens’ stromal compartments. In 11.8% (2/17) of cases, the GRPR staining intensity of prostate cancer was higher than stroma, while in 88.2% (15/17), the staining was equal. Based on the absence of stromal staining, PSMA, EpCAM and VEGF show high tumor distinctiveness. Therefore, PSMA, EpCAM and VEGF can be used as targets for the bioimaging of recurrent prostate cancer after EBRT to exclude metastatic disease and/or to plan local salvage therapy

Use of technology that supports daily structure for people with acquired brain injury or mild intellectual disability:A literature review
InleidingMensen met niet-aangeboren hersenletsel (NAH) en een licht verstandelijke beperking (LVB) hebben vaak moeite met dagstructuur. Technologie kan hierbij als ondersteuning worden ingezet. Vanuit de praktijk ontstond de vraag wat in de wetenschappelijke literatuur bekend is over de inzet van technologie ter ondersteuning van dagstructuur bij mensen met NAH en LVB. In deze studie doen we literatuuronderzoek om antwoord te geven op deze vraag.MethodeWe deden twee zoekacties binnen de wetenschappelijke literatuur, één voor de doelgroep NAH en vervolgens een geüpdatete zoekactie voor de doelgroep NAH en LVB.ResultatenUit de eerste zoekactie includeerden we 12 artikelen gepubliceerd vanaf 2010 en uit de tweede zoekactie vier reviews die focusten op de doelgroep NAH. We vonden slechts één review die de doelgroep LVB includeerde.ConclusieUit de gevonden studies blijkt dat de inzet van technologie een positief effect heeft op het behalen van doelen en psychosociale uitkomsten. Vooral draagbare technologie zoals (apps op) smartphones kunnen via prompts en timecues bijdragen aan een betere dagstructuur van mensen met NAH of een LVB. Voor succesvol gebruik op de lange termijn zijn aandacht voor een match in de keuze van technologie en voor training in het gebruik van de technologie noodzakelijk. Over meer recent opkomende technologieën als zorgrobots en smartwatches is nog weinig te vinden
Specialist versus primary care prostate cancer follow-up:A process evaluation of a randomized controlled trial
Background: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is currently comparing the effectiveness of specialist- versus primary care-based prostate cancer follow-up. This process evaluation assesses the reach and identified constructs for the implementation of primary care-based follow-up. Methods: A mixed-methods approach is used to assess the reach and the implementation through the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. We use quantitative data to evaluate the reach of the RCT and qualitative data (interviews) to indicate the perspectives of patients (n = 15), general practitioners (GPs) (n = 10), and specialists (n = 8). Thematic analysis is used to analyze the interview transcripts. Results: In total, we reached 402 (67%) patients from 12 hospitals and randomized them to specialist- (n = 201) or to primary care-based (n = 201) follow-up. From the interviews, we identify several advantages of primary care- versus specialist-based follow-up: it is closer to home, more accessible, and the relationship is more personal. Nevertheless, participants also identified challenges: guidelines should be implemented, communication and collaboration between primary and secondary care should be improved, quality indicators should be collected, and GPs should be compensated. Conclusion: Within an RCT context, 402 (67%) patients and their GPs were willing to receive/provide primary care-based follow-up. If the RCT shows that primary care is equally as effective as specialist-based follow-up, the challenges identified in this study need to be addressed to enable a smooth transition of prostate cancer follow-up to primary care. Sexual satisfaction in men suffering from erectile dysfunction after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer: an observational study
Background: Preservation of erectile function is an important postoperative quality of life concern for patients after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) for prostate cancer. Although erectile function may recover, many men continue to suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED).Aim: This study aims to determine whether satisfaction with sexual life improves in patients with ED after RARP and which factors are associated with satisfaction during follow-up.Methods: A review was carried out of a prospectively maintained database of patients with prostate cancer who underwent a RARP between 2006 and 2019. The 'International Index of Erectile Function' questionnaire was used to describe ED (range 5-25), overall satisfaction with sexual life and sexual desire (range for both: 2-10). Patients with ED due to RARP were compared with those without ED after RARP. Mixed effect model was used to test differences in satisfaction over time. Mann-Whitney U tests and multiple logistic regression were used to assess factors associated with being satisfied at 24 and 36 months.Outcomes: The main outcomes of this study are the overall satisfaction with sexual life score over time and factors which influence sexual satisfaction.Results: Data of 2808 patients were reviewed. Patients whose erectile function was not known (n = 643) or who had ED at the baseline (n = 1281) were excluded. About 884 patients were included for analysis. They had an overall satisfaction score of 8.4. Patients with ED due to RARP had mean overall satisfaction scores of 4.8, 4.8, 4.9, and 4.6 at 6 mo, 12 mo, 24 mo, and 36 mo. These scores were significantly lower than those of patients without ED at every time point. In multiple regression analysis, higher overall satisfaction score at the baseline and higher sexual desire at 24 and 36 months' follow-up were associated with satisfaction with sexual life at 24 and 36 months? follow-up. No association was found for erectile function.Clinical implications: Interventions focusing on adjustment to the changes in sexual functioning might improve sexual satisfaction; especially for those men who continue to suffer from ED.Strengths & Limitations: Strengths of this study are the large number of patients, time of follow-up, and use of multiple validated questionnaires. Our results must be interpreted within the limits of retrospectively collected, observational data.Conclusion: Satisfaction with sexual life in men with ED due to RARP may take a long time to improve. One could counsel patients that sexual satisfaction is based on individual baseline sexual satisfaction and the return of sexual desire after RARP. Copyright (C) 2020, The Authors. First Test of Lorentz Invariance in the Weak Decay of Polarized Nuclei
A new test of Lorentz invariance in the weak interactions has been made by
searching for variations in the decay rate of spin-polarized 20Na nuclei. This
test is unique to Gamow-Teller transitions, as was shown in the framework of a
recently developed theory that assumes a Lorentz symmetry breaking background
field of tensor nature. The nuclear spins were polarized in the up and down
direction, putting a limit on the amplitude of sidereal variations of the form
|(\Gamma_{up} - \Gamma_{down})| / (\Gamma_{up} + \Gamma_{down}) < 3 * 10^{-3}.
This measurement shows a possible route toward a more detailed testing of
