Photography as Expanding Form:Virtual and actual expansion in the work of Saron Hughes and Martina Corry
This article considers the notion of expanding photography in relation to the work of Saron Hughes and Martina Corry. Both artists produce work that challenges conventional readings of the photograph. Hughes’ A1 Still Life causes pictorial confusion — within photographic representation— and suggests the possibility of virtual expansion. Corry’s Colour Works series also generates pictorial ambiguity, yet this arises from the actual expansion of the photograph. Shaped into three-dimensional forms, Colour Works posits the photograph as an object. These distinct examples of expanding photography both employ folding as a method. Their contrasting approaches converge in their exploration of the fold’s ability to transform a flat paper surface into a three-dimensional form. This article explores the operations of the fold through the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. Hughes’ and Corry’s expanding photography correlates with accounts of internally and externally generated media expansion (derived from Rosalind Krauss and Peter Osborne). The virtual and actual expansion of photography here will be read in conjunction with art historical and theoretical notions of medium.<br/
Deweyan tools for inquiry and the epistemological context of critical pedagogy
This article develops the notion of resistance as articulated in the literature of critical pedagogy as being both culturally sponsored and cognitively manifested. To do so, the authors draw upon John Dewey\u27s conception of tools for inquiry. Dewey provides a way to conceptualize student resistance not as a form of willful disputation, but instead as a function of socialization into cultural models of thought that actively truncate inquiry. In other words, resistance can be construed as the cognitive and emotive dimensions of the ongoing failure of institutions to provide ideas that help individuals both recognize social problems and imagine possible solutions. Focusing on Dewey\u27s epistemological framework, specifically tools for inquiry, provides a way to grasp this problem. It also affords some innovative solutions; for instance, it helps conceive of possible links between the regular curriculum and the study of specific social justice issues, a relationship that is often under-examined. The aims of critical pedagogy depend upon students developing dexterity with the conceptual tools they use to make meaning of the evidence they confront; these are background skills that the regular curriculum can be made to serve even outside social justice-focused curricula. Furthermore, the article concludes that because such inquiry involves the exploration and potential revision of students\u27 world-ordering beliefs, developing flexibility in how one thinks may be better achieved within academic subjects and topics that are not so intimately connected to students\u27 current social lives, especially where students may be directly implicated
Isolation studies reveal a shift in the cultivable microbiome of oak affected with Acute Oak Decline

Pseudomonas daroniae sp. nov. and Pseudomonas dryadis sp. nov., isolated from pedunculate oak affected by acute oak decline in the UK
Twenty-two cream-coloured bacterial strains were isolated from oak trees affected by acute oak decline (AOD) in Southern England. Isolates were Gram-negative, motile, slightly curved rods, aerobic, non-spore-forming, catalase positive and oxidase positive. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed the strains in two separate phylogenetic clusters in the Pseudomonas straminea group, with Pseudomonas flavescens as the closest phylogenetic relative. Multilocus sequence analyses of the gyrB, rpoD and rpoB genes supported the delineation of the strains into two separate taxa, which could be differentiated phenotypically and chemotaxonomically from each other, and their closest relatives. Average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values revealed percentages of genome similarity below the species threshold (95 and 70 %, respectively) between the two taxa and the closest relatives, confirming their novel species status. Therefore, on the basis of this polyphasic approach we propose two novel Pseudomonas species, Pseudomonasdaroniae sp. nov. (type strain FRB 228T=LMG 31087T=NCPPB 4672T) and Pseudomonasdryadis sp. nov. (type strain FRB 230T=LMG 31087T=NCPPB 4673T)
The role of G protein gene GNB3 C825T Polymorphism in HIV-1 acquisition, progression and immune activation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The <it>GNB3 C825T </it>polymorphism is associated with increased G protein-mediated signal transduction, SDF-1α-mediated lymphocyte chemotaxis, accelerated HIV-1 progression, and altered responses to antiretroviral therapy among Caucasian subjects. The <it>GNB3 </it>825T allele is highly prevalent in African populations, and as such any impact on HIV-1 acquisition or progression rates could have a dramatic impact. This study examines the association of the 825T polymorphism with HIV-1 acquisition, disease progression and immune activation in two African cohorts. <it>GNB3 </it>825 genotyping was performed for enrolees in both a commercial sex worker cohort and a perinatal HIV transmission (PHT) cohort in Nairobi, Kenya. <it>Ex vivo </it>immune activation was quantified by flow cytometry, and plasma chemokine levels were assessed by cytokine bead array.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>GNB3 </it>genotype was not associated with sexual or vertical HIV-1 acquisition within these cohorts. Within the Pumwani cohort, <it>GNB3 </it>genotype did not affect HIV-1 disease progression among seroconverters or among HIV-1-positive individuals after adjustment for baseline CD4 count. Maternal CD4 decline and viral load increase in the PHT cohort did not differ between genotypes. Multi-parametric flow cytometry assessment of T cell activation (CD69, HLA-DR, CD38) and Treg frequency (CD25<sup>+</sup>FOXP3<sup>+</sup>) found no differences between genotype groups. Plasma SDF-1α, MIP-1β and TRAIL levels quantified by cytokine bead array were also similar between groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In contrast to previous reports, we were unable to provide evidence to suggest that the <it>GNB3 C825T </it>polymorphism affects HIV-1 acquisition or disease progression within African populations. <it>Ex vivo </it>immune activation and plasma chemokine levels were similarly unaffected by <it>GNB3 </it>genotype in both HIV-1-negative and HIV-1-positive individuals. The paucity of studies investigating the impact of <it>GNB3 </it>polymorphism among African populations and the lack of mechanistic studies make it difficult to assess the true biological significance of this polymorphism in HIV-1 infection.</p
Microbiome and infectivity studies reveal complex polyspecies tree disease in Acute Oak Decline
Decline-diseases are complex and becoming increasingly problematic to tree health globally. Acute Oak Decline (AOD) is characterized by necrotic stem lesions and galleries of the bark-boring beetle, Agrilus biguttatus, and represents a serious threat to oak. Although multiple novel bacterial species and Agrilus galleries are associated with AOD lesions, the causative agent(s) are unknown. The AOD pathosystem therefore provides an ideal model for a systems-based research approach to address our hypothesis that AOD lesions are caused by a polymicrobial complex. Here we show that three bacterial species, Brenneria goodwinii, Gibbsiella quercinecans and Rahnella victoriana, are consistently abundant in the lesion microbiome and possess virulence genes used by canonical phytopathogens that are expressed in AOD lesions. Individual and polyspecies inoculations on oak logs and trees demonstrated that B. goodwinii and G. quercinecans cause tissue necrosis and, in combination with A. biguttatus, produce the diagnostic symptoms of AOD. We have proved a polybacterial cause of AOD lesions, providing new insights into polymicrobial interactions and tree disease. Exploring gender and fear retrospectively:stories of women’s fear during the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ murders
The murder of 13 women in the North of England between 1975 and 1979 by Peter Sutcliffe who became known as the Yorkshire Ripper can be viewed as a significant criminal event due to the level of fear generated and the impact on local communities more generally. Drawing upon oral history interviews carried out with individuals living in Leeds at the time of the murders, this article explores women’s accounts of their fears from the time. This offers the opportunity to explore the gender/fear nexus from the unique perspective of a clearly defined object of fear situated within a specific spatial and historical setting. Findings revealed a range of anticipated fear-related emotions and practices which confirm popular ‘high-fear’ motifs; however, narrative analysis of interviews also highlighted more nuanced articulations of resistance and fearlessness based upon class, place and biographies of violence, as well as the way in which women drew upon fear/fearlessness in their overall construction of self. It is argued that using narrative approaches is a valuable means of uncovering the complexity of fear of crime and more specifically provides renewed insight onto women’s fear
