Axonal degeneration and inflammation in acute optic neuritis
Aims: To investigate whether plasma biomarkers for axonal injury and inflammation are related to loss and recovery of visual function in acute optic neuritis (ON).Methods: Eighteen patients with ON and 14 controls were investigated in a longitudinal, prospective study. Plasma phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain ( NfH(SMI35); a surrogate marker of axonal injury), nitric oxide metabolites (NOx), and citrulline ( surrogate markers of inflammation) were measured.Results: Patients with ON had higher median plasma NfH(SMI35) values than controls (0.17 versus 0.005 ng/ml; p< 0.05) and higher NOx values (49 versus 35.5 mu M; p< 0.001). Plasma NfH(SMI35) values correlated inversely with visual acuity at presentation ( R = -0.67; p = 0.01). NfH(SMI35) was higher in patients with poor recovery of visual acuity than in those with good recovery (0.25 ng/ml versus 0.09 ng/ml; p< 0.05). Three of four patients with high NfH(SMI35) and high NOx values experienced a poor recovery as opposed to only one of five with high NOx but normal NfH(SMI35) values.Conclusions: NfH(SMI35), a surrogate marker for axonal damage, is a prognostic indicator and should be considered in the design of neuroprotective treatment strategies
Biomass-supported catalysts on Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Rhodobacter sphaeroides
A Rhodobacter sphaeroides-supported dried, ground palladium catalyst (‘‘Rs-Pd(0)’’) was compared with a Desulfovibrio desulfuricans-supported catalyst (‘‘Dd-Pd(0)’’)and with unsupported palladium metal particles made by reduction under H2 (‘‘Chem-Pd(0)’’). Cell surface-located clusters of Pd(0) nanoparticles were detected on both D. desulfuricans and R. sphaeroides but the size and location of deposits differed among comparably loaded preparations.\ud

These differences may underlie the observation of different activities of Dd-Pd(0) and Rs-Pd(0) when compared with respect to their ability to promote hydrogen release from hypophosphite and to catalyze chloride release from chlorinated aromatic compounds. Dd-Pd(0) was more effective in the reductive dehalogenation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), whereas Rs-Pd(0) was more effective in the initial dehalogenation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) although the rate of chloride release from PCP was comparable with both preparations after 2 h
System characterization of a magnetically suspended flywheel
The purpose of flywheel energy storage is to provide a means to save energy during times when the satellite is in sunlight, and then return the energy during the time when the satellite is in darkness. Typically, an energy storage device operates cyclically, where for satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) the typical period is 60 minutes of sunlight followed by 30 minutes of darkness. If a lifetime of 17 years is required the energy storage system must be capable of sustaining approximately 100,000 cycles. The recent developments at the University of Maryland and how these progressions apply to a 500 Watt-hour magnetically suspended flywheel stack energy storage system are covered. The work includes hardware testing results from a stack flywheel energy storage system, improvements in the area of non-contacting displacement transducers, and performance enhancements of magnetic bearings. The experimental results show that a stack flywheel energy storage system is a feasible technology
The Forum of European Geological Surveys Geochemistry Task Group 1994-1996 inventory
The Forum of European Geological Surveys (FOREGS) includes representatives from 33 European countries and is responsible for co-ordinating Geological Survey activities in Europe. The FOREGS Geochemistry Task Group was established in 1994 to develop a strategy for the preparation of European geochemical maps following the recommendations of the International Geological Correlation Programme (IGCP) Project 259 ‘International Geochemical Mapping’ (now the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) /International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry (IAGC) Working Group on Global Geochemical Baselines).
The FOREGS geochemistry programme is aimed at preparing a standardised European geochemical baseline to IGCP-259 standards. The principal aims of this dataset will be for environmental purposes, as a baseline for the assessment of the extent and distribution of contaminated land in the context of variations in the natural geochemical background, but it will also have applications in resource assessment and for the development of policy for the sustainable management of metalliferous mineral and other resources.
The first phase of the programme was the compilation of an inventory of geochemical data based on the results of a questionnaire completed by Geological Surveys and related organisations throughout the FOREGS community. The results show that the sample types which have been used most extensively are stream sediment (26% coverage), surface water (19% coverage) and soil (11% coverage). Stream sediments have been collected using a narrow range of mesh sizes (< 150–< 200 μm), but soil samples have been collected according to two different conventions: some surveys used a similar mesh size range to that used for stream sediments while others employed the < 1000 or < 2000 μm fractions traditionally used by soil surveys. Sample densities range from 1 sample per 0.5 km2 to 1 per 3500 km2. Various analytical methods have been used, but most of the available data have been calibrated using international reference materials, and data for the most important of the potentially harmful elements (PHEs) are available for most datasets. Systematic radiometric data are available for only a small proportion of Europe, a situation which compares very unfavourably with that in Australia, North America, the former Soviet Union and many developing countries.
Recommendations are made for increasing the compatibility of geochemical methods between national geochemical surveys as a basis for the preparation of a series of European geochemical maps. The next stage of the FOREGS Geochemistry Task Group will be the collection of the Global Reference Network of samples against which to standardise national datasets according to the methods recommended in the final report of the IGCP 259 programme
SU(2)xSU(2) nonlocal quark model with confinement
The nonlocal version of the SU(2)xSU(2) symmetric four-quark interaction of
the NJL type is considered. Each of the quark lines contains the form factors.
These form factors remove the ultraviolet divergences in quark loops. The
additional condition on quark mass function m(p) ensures the absence of the
poles in the quark propagator(quark confinement). The constituent quark mass
m(0) is expressed thought the cut-off parameter Lambda, m(0)=Lambda=340 MeV in
the chiral limit. These parameters are fixed by the experimental value of the
weak pion decay and allow us to describe the mass of the light scalar meson,
strong decay rho -> pi pi and D/S ratio in the decay a_1 -> rho pi in

Field Test of a Remote Multi-Path CLaDS Methane Sensor
Existing technologies for quantifying methane emissions are often limited to single point sensors, making large area environmental observations challenging. We demonstrate the operation of a remote, multi-path system using Chirped Laser Dispersion Spectroscopy (CLaDS) for quantification of atmospheric methane concentrations over extended areas, a technology that shows potential for monitoring emissions from wetlands
ANATOMICAL STUDIES OF LAURENCIA OBTUSA (HUDSON) LAMOUROUX (CERAMIALES) OF RHODOPHYCEAE
Thallus of Laurencia obtusa of Rhodophyceae was studied and detailed micromorphological evaluation was done. Morphology of the thallus has been studied to aid pharmacognostic and phytochemical evidences to aid in taxonomic species identification. Parameters presented in this paper may be proposed to establish the authenticity of this red alga and can possibly help to differentiate this alga from its other species. Since the collections were made in the month of March, Laurencia was with few gametophytic thalli . The study revealed several interesting anatomical characters and its cellular details
FRB microstructure revealed by the real-time detection of FRB170827
We report a new fast radio burst (FRB) discovered in real-time as part of the UTMOST project at the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Radio Telescope. FRB170827 was first detected with our low-latency (20 ± 7 Jy ms, and is narrow with a width of ∼400 s at 10 per cent of its maximum amplitude. However, the burst shows three temporal components, the narrowest of which is ∼30 s, and a scattering time-scale of 4.1 ± 2.7 s. The FRB shows spectral modulations on frequency scales of 1.5 MHz and 0.1 MHz. Both are prominent in the dynamic spectrum, which shows a very bright region of emission between 841 and 843 MHz, and weaker and patchy emission across the entire band. We show that the fine spectral structure could arise in the FRB host galaxy, or its immediate vicinity
Do Gender Differences in Perceived Prototypical Computer Scientists and Engineers Contribute to Gender Gaps in Computer Science and Engineering?
Women are vastly underrepresented in the fields of computer science and engineering (CS&E). We examined whether women might view the intellectual characteristics of prototypical individuals in CS&E in more stereotype-consistent ways than men might and, consequently, show less interest in CS&E. We asked 269 U.S. college students (187, 69.5% women) to describe the prototypical computer scientist (Study 1) or engineer (Study 2) through open-ended descriptions as well as through a set of trait ratings. Participants also rated themselves on the same set of traits and rated their similarity to the prototype. Finally, participants in both studies were asked to describe their likelihood of pursuing future college courses and careers in computer science (Study 1) or engineering (Study 2). Across both studies, we found that women offered more stereotype-consistent ratings than did men of the intellectual characteristics of prototypes in CS (Study 1) and engineering (Study 2). Women also perceived themselves as less similar to the prototype than men did. Further, the observed gender differences in prototype perceptions mediated the tendency for women to report lower interest in CS&E fields relative to men. Our work highlights the importance of prototype perceptions for understanding the gender gap in CS&E and suggests avenues for interventions that may increase women’s representation in these vital fields
Studying the Solar system with the International Pulsar Timing Array
Pulsar-timing analyses are sensitive to errors in the Solar-system ephemerides (SSEs) that timing models utilize to estimate the location of the Solar-system barycentre, the quasi-inertial reference frame to which all recorded pulse times-of-arrival are referred. Any error in the SSE will affect all pulsars, therefore pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are a suitable tool to search for such errors and impose independent constraints on relevant physical parameters. We employ the first data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array to constrain the masses of the planet–moons systems and to search for possible unmodelled objects (UMOs) in the Solar system. We employ 10 SSEs from two independent research groups, derive and compare mass constraints of planetary systems, and derive the first PTA mass constraints on asteroid-belt objects. Constraints on planetary-system masses have been improved by factors of up to 20 from the previous relevant study using the same assumptions, with the mass of the Jovian system measured at 9.5479189(3) × 10^(−4) M⊙. The mass of the dwarf planet Ceres is measured at 4.7(4) × 10^(−10) M⊙. We also present the first sensitivity curves using real data that place generic limits on the masses of UMOs, which can also be used as upper limits on the mass of putative exotic objects. For example, upper limits on dark-matter clumps are comparable to published limits using independent methods. While the constraints on planetary masses derived with all employed SSEs are consistent, we note and discuss differences in the associated timing residuals and UMO sensitivity curves
