    Binary morphological shape-based interpolation applied to 3-D tooth reconstruction

    In this paper we propose an interpolation algorithm using a mathematical morphology morphing approach. The aim of this algorithm is to reconstruct the nn-dimensional object from a group of (n-1)-dimensional sets representing sections of that object. The morphing transformation modifies pairs of consecutive sets such that they approach in shape and size. The interpolated set is achieved when the two consecutive sets are made idempotent by the morphing transformation. We prove the convergence of the morphological morphing. The entire object is modeled by successively interpolating a certain number of intermediary sets between each two consecutive given sets. We apply the interpolation algorithm for 3-D tooth reconstruction

    Prediction and Tracking of Moving Objects in Image Sequences

    We employ a prediction model for moving object velocity and location estimation derived from Bayesian theory. The optical flow of a certain moving object depends on the history of its previous values. A joint optical flow estimation and moving object segmentation algorithm is used for the initialization of the tracking algorithm. The segmentation of the moving objects is determined by appropriately classifying the unlabeled and the occluding regions. Segmentation and optical flow tracking is used for predicting future frames

    Projection distortion analysis for flattened image mosaicing from straight uniform generalized cylinders

    This paper presents a new approach for reconstructing images mapped or painted on straight uniform generalized cylinders (SUGC). A set of monocular images is taken from different viewpoints in order to be mosaiced and to represent the entire scene in detail. The expressions of the SUGC's projection axis are derived from two cross-sections projected onto the image plane. Based on these axes we derive the SUGC localization in the camera coordinate system. We explain how we can find a virtual image representation when the intersection of the two axes is matched to the image center. We analyze the perspective distortions when flattening a scene which is mapped on a SUGC. We evaluate the lower and the upper bounds of the necessary number of views in order to represent the entire scene from a SUGC, by considering the distortions produced by perspective projection. A region matching based mosaicing method is proposed to be applied on the flattened images in order to obtain the complete scene. The mosaiced scene is visualized on a new synthetic surface by a mapping procedure. The proposed algorithm is used for the representation of mural paintings located on SUGCs with closed cross-sections (circles for columns), or opened cross-sections (ellipses or parabolas for vaults).     Audio-assisted movie dialogue detection

    An audio-assisted system is investigated that detects if a movie scene is a dialogue or not. The system is based on actor indicator functions. That is, functions which define if an actor speaks at a certain time instant. In particular, the cross-correlation and the magnitude of the corresponding the cross-power spectral density of a pair of indicator functions are input to various classifiers, such as voted perceptions, radial basis function networks, random trees, and support vector machines for dialogue/non-dialogue detection. To boost classifier efficiency AdaBoost is also exploited. The aforementioned classifiers are trained using ground truth indicator functions determined by human annotators for 41 dialogue and another 20 non-dialogue audio instances. For testing, actual indicator functions are derived by applying audio activity detection and actor clustering to audio recordings. 23 instances are randomly chosen among the aforementioned 41 dialogue instances, 17 of which correspond to dialogue scenes and 6 to non-dialogue ones. Accuracy ranging between 0.739 and 0.826 is reported. © 2008 IEEE

    Low-dose expression of a human apolipoprotein E transgene in macrophages restores cholesterol efflux capacity of apolipoprotein E-deficient mouse plasma

    Apolipoprotein E- (apoE) deficient (E-/-) mice develop severe hyperlipidemia and diffuse atherosclerosis. Low-dose expression of a human apoE3 transgene in macrophages of apoE-deficient mice (E-/-hTgE+/0), which results in about 5% of wild-type apoE plasma levels, did not correct hyperlipidemia but significantly reduced the extent of atherosclerotic lesions. To investigate the contribution of apoE to reverse cholesterol transport, we compared plasmas of wild-type (E+/+), E-/-, and E-/-hTgE+/0 mice for the appearance of apoE-containing lipoproteins by electrophoresis and their capacity to take up and esterify 3H-labeled cholesterol from radiolabeled fibroblasts or J774 macrophages. Wild-type plasma displayed lipoproteins containing apoE that were the size of high density lipoprotein and that had either electrophoretic alpha or gamma mobilities. Similar particles were also present in E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma. Depending on incubation time, E-/- plasma released 48-74% less 3H-labeled cholesterol from fibroblasts than E+/+ plasma, whereas cholesterol efflux into E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma was only 11-25% lower than into E+/+ plasma. E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma also released 10% more 3H-labeled cholesterol from radiolabeled J774 macrophages than E-/- plasma. E+/+ and E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma each esterified significantly more cell-derived 3H-labeled cholesterol than E-/- plasma. Moreover, E-/- plasma accumulated much smaller proportions of fibroblast-derived 3H-labeled cholesterol in fractions with electrophoretic gamma and alpha mobility than E+/+ and E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma. Thus, low-dose expression of apoE in macrophages nearly restored the cholesterol efflux capacity of apoE-deficient plasma through the formation of apoE-containing particles, which efficiently take up cell-derived cholesterol, and through the increase of cholesterol esterification activity. Thus, macrophage-derived apoE may protect against atherosclerosis by increasing cholesterol efflux from arterial wall cells

    Data fusion of ultrasound and GPR signals for analysis of historic walls

    [EN] This paper presents an application of ultrasounds and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for analysis of historic walls. The objectives are to characterize the deformation of a historic wall under different levels of load weights and to obtain an enhanced image of the wall. A new method that fuses data from ultrasound and GPR traces is proposed which is based on order statistics digital filters. Application results are presented for non destructive testing (NDT) of two replicates of historic ashlars' masonry walls: the first one homogeneous and the second one containing controlled defects such as cracks and nooks. The walls are measured separately using ultrasounds and GPR at different load steps. Time and frequency parameters extracted from the signals and different B-Scans for each of the NDT techniques are obtained.     Mice fed a lipogenic methionine-choline-deficient diet develop hypermetabolism coincident with hepatic suppression of SCD-1

    Lipogenic diets that are completely devoid of methionine and choline (MCD) induce hepatic steatosis. MCD feeding also provokes systemic weight loss, for unclear reasons. In this study, we found that MCD feeding causes profound hepatic suppression of the gene encoding stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase-1 (SCD-1), an enzyme whose regulation has significant effects on metabolic rate. Within 7 days of MCD exposure, hepatic SCD-1 mRNA decreased to nearly undetectable levels. By day 21, SCD-1 protein was absent from hepatic microsomes and fatty acids showed a decrease in monounsaturated species. These changes in hepatic SCD-1 were accompanied by signs of hypermetabolism. Calorimetry revealed that MCD-fed mice consumed 37% more energy than control mice (P = 0.0003). MCD feeding also stimulated fatty acid oxidation, although fatty oxidation genes were not significantly upregulated. Interestingly, despite their increased metabolic rate, MCD-fed mice did not increase their food consumption, and as a result, they lost 26% of their body weight in 21 days.jlr In summary, MCD feeding suppresses SCD-1 in the liver, which likely contributes to hypermetabolism and weight loss. MCD feeding also induces hepatic steatosis, by an independent mechanism.
