    Towards the Modeling of Neuronal Firing by Gaussian Processes

    This paper focuses on the outline of some computational methods for the approximate solution of the integral equations for the neuronal firing probability density and an algorithm for the generation of sample-paths in order to construct histograms estimating the firing densities. Our results originate from the study of non-Markov stationary Gaussian neuronal models with the aim to determine the neuron's firing probability density function. A parallel algorithm has been implemented in order to simulate large numbers of sample paths of Gaussian processes characterized by damped oscillatory covariances in the presence of time dependent boundaries. The analysis based on the simulation procedure provides an alternative research tool when closed-form results or analytic evaluation of the neuronal firing densities are not available.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Scientiae Mathematicae Japonica

    On Myosin II dynamics in the presence of external loads

    We address the controversial hot question concerning the validity of the loose coupling versus the lever-arm theories in the actomyosin dynamics by re-interpreting and extending the phenomenological washboard potential model proposed by some of us in a previous paper. In this new model a Brownian motion harnessing thermal energy is assumed to co-exist with the deterministic swing of the lever-arm, to yield an excellent fit of the set of data obtained by some of us on the sliding of Myosin II heads on immobilized actin filaments under various load conditions. Our theoretical arguments are complemented by accurate numerical simulations, and the robustness of the model is tested via different choices of parameters and potential profiles.Comment: 6 figures, 8 tables, to appear on Biosystem

    Fractional queues with catastrophes and their transient behaviour

    Starting from the definition of fractional M/M/1 queue given in the reference by Cahoy et al. in 2015 and M/M/1 queue with catastrophes given in the reference by Di Crescenzo et al. in 2003, we define and study a fractional M/M/1 queue with catastrophes. In particular, we focus our attention on the transient behaviour, in which the time-change plays a key role. We first specify the conditions for the global uniqueness of solutions of the corresponding linear fractional differential problem. Then, we provide an alternative expression for the transient distribution of the fractional M/M/1 model, the state probabilities for the fractional queue with catastrophes, the distributions of the busy period for fractional queues without and with catastrophes and, finally, the distribution of the time of the first occurrence of a catastrophe

    Measurement of the branching fraction for the decay KS --> pi e nu

    We present a measurement of the branching ratio BR(KS --> pi e nu) performed using the KLOE detector. KS mesons are produced in the reaction e+ e- --> phi --> KS KL at the DAFNE collider. In a sample of about 5 million KS-tagged events we find 624 +- 30 semileptonic KS decays. Normalizing to the KS --> pi+ pi- count in the same data sample, we obtain BR(KS --> pi e nu) = (6.91 +- 0.37) 10^-4, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 Encapsulated Postscript figures.     Measurement of hadronic cross section and preliminary results on the pion form factor using the radiative return at DAPHNE

    In the fixed energy environment of the e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider DAΦ\PhiNE, KLOE can measure the cross section of the process e+ee^{+}e^{-} \to hadrons as a function of the hadronic system energy using the radiative return. At energies below 1 GeV, e+eρπ+πe^{+}e^{-} \to \rho \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-} is the dominating hadronic process.     Study of the Decay phi --> eta pi0 gamma with the KLOE detector

    In a sample of 5.3x10^7 phi-decays observed with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory Dafne we find 605 eta pi0 gamma events with eta --> gamma\gamma and 197 eta pi0 gamma events with eta --> pi+ pi- pi0. The decay phi --> eta pi0 gamma is dominated by the process phi --> a0 gamma. From a fit to the eta pi0 mass spectrum we find BR(phi --> ao(980) gamma)= (7.4 +- 0.7)x10^-5.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
