The results from a field study on autochthonous visceral leishmaniasis on the island of São Luís are presented. This study started in 2004 and finished in 2006 and had the aim of ascertaining the determinant epidemiological and clinical characteristics of this endemic disease. Two hundred ninety nine autochthonous cases were analyzed, of which 83.6% were children younger than 9 years old and 54.1% were male. The disease occurred in all months of the year, with a peak in June. The coefficient of incidence decreased from 46.1 to 35.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the years studied. The diagnosis was confirmed by laboratory tests in 93.3% of the cases. The treatment of choice was based on N-methylglucamine, with a cure rate of 96.1%. The mean lethality rate was 3.7%. Because of the absence of systematic control actions, the authors propose the creation of a specific program to be developed by the municipalities under the coordination of the State Department of Health

Leishmaniose visceral (calazar) entrou definitivamente como nosologia importante do Estado do Maranhão, Brasil, a partir de 1982.
Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) was definitively an important disease of the state of Maranhão-Brasil since 1982. Since of then, many authors have been working with this topic in spite of reports. Nevertheless, the aspects of diagnosis, treatment an control of cure went through still hard worried the authors have been studing the disease, that came at São Luís Island since of the desestabilization of the ecotops of Lutzomya longipalpis, most important sandflies bites. After 1993 the constatation of cases with bad response to pentavalent antimonial (Glucantime®) comes to add the other worries. This actual trial accost the disease and conclude about an existence of failures to Glucantime® being important to have much vigilance in the diagnosis, treatment and control of cure of the patients

Da denúncia à impunidade: um estudo sobre a morbi-mortalidade de crianças vítimas de violência From complaints to impunity: a morbidity and mortality profile of children suffering violence

This article analyzes complaints of violence against children and the procedures subsequent to their filing. The methodology, largely qualitative, was two-pronged, involving an analysis of data from the year 1990 from the police precincts in Program Areas 1 and 5 in the city of Rio de Janeiro and a discussion on the follow-up of complaints five years after the events. The conclusion was that motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of violence against children. Almost no information had been recorded about the circumstances in which the violent events occurred. Further, nothing had been done to elucidate the perpetrators' liability

Neotropical freshwater fisheries : A dataset of occurrence and abundance of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications
