Flash-flood forecasting by means of neural networks and nearest neighbour approach ? a comparative study
International audienceIn this paper, Multi-Layer Perceptron and Radial-Basis Function Neural Networks, along with the Nearest Neighbour approach and linear regression are utilized for flash-flood forecasting in the mountainous Nysa Klodzka river catchment. It turned out that the Radial-Basis Function Neural Network is the best model for 3- and 6-h lead time prediction and the only reliable one for 9-h lead time forecasting for the largest flood used as a test case
Growth Kinetics of Vitamin C Crystals in a Batch L(+)-Ascorbic Acid â Methanol â Ethanol â Water System: Size Independent Growth Model Approach
The experimental data concerning growth kinetics of vitamin C (L(+)-ascorbic acid, LAA) crystals in a seeded and cooling batch mass crystallization process realized in a fourâcompound: L(+)-ascorbic acidâmethanolâethanolâwater system are reported. Influences of initial composition of solution and its linear cooling rate on âaverage, effectiveâ values of crystal linear growth rate were examined. Small divergences between LAA crystal size distributions (CSDs) data from granulometric analysis and Coulter counter were interpreted theoretically and discussed. Linear growth rates of crystals in a batch crystallizer were acquired with a proposed by NĂœvlt indirect method, based on the analysis of population density n(L) data in a MSMPR (mixed suspension mixed product removal) crystallizer. Sizeâindependent growth (SIG) kinetics was assumed. It can be concluded, that the largest and the most uniform particles of purified, crystalline vitamin C correspond to higher initial concentration of L(+)-ascorbic acid in a solution and lower cooling rate applied
Conceptual design of elliptical cavities for intensity and position sensitive beam measurements in storage rings
Position sensitive beam monitors are indispensable for the beam diagnostics
in storage rings. Apart from their applications in the measurements of beam
parameters, they can be used in non-destructive in-ring decay studies of
radioactive ion beams as well as enhancing precision in the isochronous mass
measurement technique. In this work, we introduce a novel approach based on
cavities with elliptical cross-section, in order to compensate for existing
limitations in ion storage rings. The design is aimed primarily for future
heavy ion storage rings of the FAIR project. The conceptual design is discussed

Interacting Binaries with Eccentric Orbits. Secular Orbital Evolution Due To Conservative Mass Transfer
We investigate the secular evolution of the orbital semi-major axis and
eccentricity due to mass transfer in eccentric binaries, assuming conservation
of total system mass and orbital angular momentum. Assuming a delta function
mass transfer rate centered at periastron, we find rates of secular change of
the orbital semi-major axis and eccentricity which are linearly proportional to
the magnitude of the mass transfer rate at periastron. The rates can be
positive as well as negative, so that the semi-major axis and eccentricity can
increase as well as decrease in time. Adopting a delta-function mass-transfer
rate of 10^{-9} M_\sun {\rm yr}^{-1} at periastron yields orbital evolution
timescales ranging from a few Myr to a Hubble time or more, depending on the
binary mass ratio and orbital eccentricity. Comparison with orbital evolution
timescales due to dissipative tides furthermore shows that tides cannot, in all
cases, circularize the orbit rapidly enough to justify the often adopted
assumption of instantaneous circularization at the onset of mass transfer. The
formalism presented can be incorporated in binary evolution and population
synthesis codes to create a self-consistent treatment of mass transfer in

Quantum Matching Pennies Game
A quantum version of the Matching Pennies (MP) game is proposed that is
played using an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm (EPR-Bohm) setting. We construct
the quantum game without using the state vectors, while considering only the
quantum mechanical joint probabilities relevant to the EPR-Bohm setting. We
embed the classical game within the quantum game such that the classical MP
game results when the quantum mechanical joint probabilities become
factorizable. We report new Nash equilibria in the quantum MP game that emerge
when the quantum mechanical joint probabilities maximally violate the
Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt form of Bell's inequality.Comment: Revised in light of referees' comments, submitted to Journal of the

Early development of the facial nerve in human embryos at stages 13â15
Study was made on 16 human embryos at developmental stages 13â15 (fifth week). The facial nerve was traced on serial sections made in three planes (sagittal, frontal and horizontal) and stained with routine histological methods and impregnated with silver. In embryos at stage 13 the facial ganglion forms a complex structure with the vestibulocochlear ganglion. It is of fusiform shape in contact with epipharyngeal placode and is located anteriorly and ventrally to the vestibulocochlear ganglion. In embryos at stage 14 the facial ganglion separates from the vestibular and cochlear ganglia and the chorda tympani as the first branch appears. During stage 15 the main trunk of the facial nerve elongates and the greater petrosal nerve originates at the level of the facial ganglion and above the origin of the chorda tympani
