Bilateral variation of the venous corona mortis with a presentation previously undescribed

    Get PDF
The corona mortis is an anatomic variant that involves anastomosis between obturator vessels, external iliac vessels and/or inferior epigastric vessels. It is clinically and surgically important because its section may lead to fatal consequences when pelvic procedures are performed. We report a case in which, during an anatomical dissection in a female cadaver, a bilateral corona mortis that involved obturator vessels and external iliac vessels was found, presenting differences on each side, an undescribed type of corona mortis was found and a classification modification was proposed

Digital transformation : construct definition challenges and scenarios for a research agenda

    Get PDF
Indeed, digital transformation is just like the new models of the various technological devices (smartphones, tablets, smart watches) that are used without us fully mastering their resources. It is happening in an accelerated way without even having a clear understanding of the phenomenon. It is typically a situation in which reality occurs at a speed greater than its understanding, thus claiming the researchers' positioning in the face of digital contemporaneity. Just like Uber, that initially imposed itself as a “de facto” reality (in practice) before becoming a de jure standard (supported by law), the research agenda digital transformation seeks to guide the future of research in the field, but, due to the speed of changes, it may fit into the metaphor of the lantern on the ship's stern, helping to illuminate the past. Even though the organizational practice is more agile than the academy, it is still worth emphasizing the fundamental role of research in interpreting the nuances of the phenomenon through the most diverse perspectives..info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

VISITANTES, AUDIENCIAS, PÚBLICOS. APUNTES PARA UN ESTUDIO DESDE LAS PRÁCTICAS CULTURALES

    Get PDF
Reviewing the main trends in research on visitor experiences, with an emphasis on art museums, this article seeks to refl ect on the principles that shape the conceptualization of the public, the methodology used to register its experiences, and the problematic assumptions that impede its development. Th is analysis provides support for the claim that audiences should be studied from a processual perspective capable of registering the complex and diverse ways in which individuals and communities interact with cultural products.

Casilla 747,Talca, Chile.Factor V Leiden and G20210A mutation of prothrombin gene are two important genetic polymorphisms associated with an increased risk for thrombosis. Aim: To establish the prevalence of factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A mutation in the Chilean population and their association to venous and arterial thromboembolism. Material and methods: A case-control study was conducted where 149 patients with thrombosis (87 with arterial and 62 with venous thrombosis) confirmed by CAT-scan, electrocardiogram and cardiac enzymes or Doppler depending on the case, and 160 healthy blood donors were genetically analyzed for the presence of both polymorphisms. Results: Factor V Leiden mutation was found in 5.4% of patients and in 1.3% of healthy controls (p=0.04). Heterozygosity for G20210A prothrombin mutation was found in 5.4% of patients and in 2.5% of the control group (p=NS). When arterial and venous thrombosis were considered as separate entities, 4.6% of patients with arterial thrombosis and 6.5% with venous thrombosis presented factor V Leiden (p=NS). Likewise, 8.1% of patients with venous thrombosis and 3.5% of patients with arterial thrombosis had G20210A prothrombin mutation (p=NS). Conclusions: In non selected consecutive Chilean patients with arterial and venous thrombosis the frequency of factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A is less than we could expect from their prevalence in the general populatio

Genetically engineered bananas resistant to Xanthomonas wilt disease and nematodes

    Get PDF
Banana is an important staple food crop feeding more than 100 million Africans, but is subject to severe productivity constraints due to a range of pests and diseases. Banana Xanthomonas wilt caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum is capable of entirely destroying a plantation while nematodes can cause losses up to 50% and increase susceptibility to other pests and diseases. Development of improved varieties of banana is fundamental in order to tackle these challenges. However, the sterile nature of the crop and the lack of resistance in Musa germplasm make improvement by traditional breeding techniques either impossible or extremely slow. Recent developments using genetic engineering have begun to address these problems. Transgenic banana expressing sweet pepper Hrap and Pflp genes have demonstrated complete resistance against X. campestris pv. musacearum in the field. Transgenic plantains expressing a cysteine proteinase inhibitors and/or synthetic peptide showed enhanced resistance to a mixed species population of nematodes in the field. Here, we review the genetic engineering technologies which have potential to improve agriculture and food security in Africa
