Correlations of errors in a CP-violation neutrino factory experiment
An indirect CP-violation neutrino factory experiment is studied, including
simul taneous correlations of errors of the six oscillation parameters and a
matter ef fect normalisation parameter, C. It is found that for larger values
of (), an uncertainty on the matter effect of the order
5% means t hat the optimal baseline for measurement of is reduced from
3000km to 2 000km. When the background fraction is assumed to be the
optimal muon energy is also reduced from 50GeV to around 20GeV. An experiment
with L=2000km, 20GeV is found to be sensitive to non-zero down
to around \t heta_{13}\approx0.3^\circ.Comment: 4 pages, uses elsart.cls & epsfig, 2 figures, talk at the NUFACT'01

metaSHARK: software for automated metabolic network prediction from DNA sequence and its application to the genomes of Plasmodium falciparum and Eimeria tenella
The metabolic SearcH And Reconstruction Kit
(metaSHARK) is a new fully automated software package
for the detection of enzyme-encoding genes
within unannotated genome data and their visualization
in the context of the surrounding metabolic network.
The gene detection package (SHARKhunt) runs
on a Linux systemand requires only a set of raw DNA
sequences (genomic, expressed sequence tag and/
or genome survey sequence) as input. Its output
may be uploaded to our web-based visualization
tool (SHARKview) for exploring and comparing data
from different organisms. We first demonstrate the
utility of the software by comparing its results for
the raw Plasmodium falciparum genome with the
manual annotations available at the PlasmoDB and
PlasmoCyc websites. We then apply SHARKhunt to
the unannotated genome sequences of the coccidian
parasite Eimeria tenella and observe that, at an
E-value cut-off of 10(-20), our software makes 142
additional assertions of enzymatic function compared
with a recent annotation package working
with translated open reading frame sequences. The
ability of the software to cope with low levels of
sequence coverage is investigated by analyzing
assemblies of the E.tenella genome at estimated
coverages from 0.5x to 7.5x. Lastly, as an example
of how metaSHARK can be used to evaluate the
genomic evidence for specific metabolic pathways,
we present a study of coenzyme A biosynthesis in
P.falciparum and E.tenella
Risk Factors for Hospital Malpractice Exposure: Implications for Managers and Insurers
The possibility of identifying certain variables that might serve as predictors of above- or below-average medical malpractice claims experience was explored. Results showed that it is possible to identify significant risk factors

The Kipling Collection at Syracuse
The following is an edited transcript of the talk given by Professor Pinney to the Syracuse University Library Associates on 25 September 1992. Professor Pinney is the editor of The Letters of Rudyard Kipling.
Though Kipling is known to have visited New York State, it is unlikely that he ever saw the streets of Syracuse. However, he is notably present in the city now through the large, important, and growing collection of his letters and printed works assembled here in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections. There are other important Kipling collections in the United States. Kipling\u27s great popularity in this country meant that his work, and everything connected with it, was eagerly sought after from the beginning of his career. As a result, considerable collections are now to be found in libraries throughout the country - in the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library, the Ransom Library of the University of Texas, and the Bancroft Library of the University of California, to name only a few. But the Syracuse collection is not only the peer of these rivals, it is the most actively growing of them all
How States are Meeting the Highly Qualified Teacher Component of NCLB
As part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act the federal government has added the requirement that all schools receiving Title I funds must have highly qualified teachers in every classroom. The term highly qualified teacher comes from the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. What exactly is a highly qualified teacher? This part of the law is widely debated throughout the fifty states, but most agree that a teacher\u27s subject-matter knowledge and experience result in increased student achievement.(Ansell& McCase, 2003) Some states have made progress in meeting the highly qualified requirement of NCLB. However, most states have merely established the criteria for determining if a teacher is highly qualified (Keller, 2003). The Education Trust has called for clarification from the Department of Education on the guidelines for the teacher quality provision of the law. Ten states have put into law all the requirements of the federal law, 22 have done some work toward that goal, and 18 states still have a long way to go (Keller). With so many states still grappling with compliance to the law, this study may well give policy makers in those states options that are being used in other states to consider. In addition, the study focuses on middle school and the possible impact these requirements will have on staffing of middle schools. Policy makers would do well to look at this aspect closely since middle school is often where education loses many students to dropping out. Also, the middle school is where the greatest number of non-certified teachers are working and where the greatest percentage (44%) of teachers are teaching without even a minor in the subject they teach (Ingersoll, 2002)
