    Holographic Coulomb Branch Flows with N=1 Supersymmetry

    We obtain a large, new class of N=1 supersymmetric holographic flow backgrounds with U(1)^3 symmetry. These solutions correspond to flows toward the Coulomb branch of the non-trivial N=1 supersymmetric fixed point. The massless (complex) chiral fields are allowed to develop vevs that are independent of their two phase angles, and this corresponds to allowing the brane to spread with arbitrary, U(1)^2 invariant, radial distributions in each of these directions. Our solutions are "almost Calabi-Yau:" The metric is hermitian with respect to an integrable complex structure, but is not Kahler. The "modulus squared" of the holomorphic (3,0)-form is the volume form, and the complete solution is characterized by a function that must satisfy a single partial differential equation that is closely related to the Calabi-Yau condition. The deformation from a standard Calabi-Yau background is driven by a non-trivial, non-normalizable 3-form flux dual to a fermion mass that reduces the supersymmetry to N=1. The article examines approaches to management from perspectives of different theories. Currently, the functioning of the financial markets has seen to become more complicated that hinders the technical analysis of the markets. Agents making decisions in the financial markets are more prone now to demonstrate massive behavior due to restricted information availability. It was revealed that supply chain management is most likely the underlying cause for bank crises and financial bubbles.     Supersymmetric Charged Clouds in AdS_5

    We consider supersymmetric holographic flows that involve background gauge fields dual to chemical potentials in the boundary field theory. We use a consistent truncation of gauged N=8 supergravity in five dimensions and we give a complete analysis of the supersymmetry conditions for a large family of flows. We examine how the well-known supersymmetric flow between two fixed points is modified by the presence of the chemical potentials and this yields a new, completely smooth, solution that interpolates between two global AdS spaces of different radii and with different values of the chemical potential. We also examine some black-hole-like singular flows and a new non-supersymmetric black hole solution. We comment on the interpretation of our new solutions in terms of giant gravitons and discuss the implications of our work for finding black-hole solutions in AdS geometries.Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures; minor corrections, updated reference

    Supergravity Instabilities of Non-Supersymmetric Quantum Critical Points

    Motivated by the recent use of certain consistent truncations of M-theory to study condensed matter physics using holographic techniques, we study the SU(3)-invariant sector of four-dimensional, N=8 gauged supergravity and compute the complete scalar spectrum at each of the five non-trivial critical points. We demonstrate that the smaller SU(4)^- sector is equivalent to a consistent truncation studied recently by various authors and find that the critical point in this sector, which has been proposed as the ground state of a holographic superconductor, is unstable due to a family of scalars that violate the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We also derive the origin of this instability in eleven dimensions and comment on the generalization to other embeddings of this critical point which involve arbitrary Sasaki-Einstein seven manifolds. In the spirit of a resurging interest in consistent truncations, we present a formal treatment of the SU(3)-invariant sector as a U(1)xU(1) gauged N=2 supergravity theory coupled to one hypermultiplet.Comment: 46 page

    The effect of social exclusion on state paranoia and explicit and implicit self-esteem in a non-clinical sample

    Background and objectives: The relationship between self-esteem and paranoia may be influenced by social stress. This study aimed to replicate previous research on the impact ofsocial exclusion on paranoia and self-esteem in a non-clinical sample and to extend this work by examining the effect of exclusion on self-esteem at the 'implicit' level. Methods: Non-clinical participants (N = 85) were randomly allocated to the Inclusion or Exclusion condition of a virtual ball-toss game ('Cyberball'). They completed self-reportmeasures of state paranoia and self-esteem, and two implicit measures of self-esteem - theImplicit Association Task (IAT) and Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) -prior to and after exposure to Cyberball. Results: Social exclusion increased state paranoia. This effect was moderated by distress associated with trait paranoia. Exclusion was also associated with decreased self-reported self-esteem, as well as reduced implicit self-esteem on the IAT. Changes in self-reported self-esteem were associated with state paranoia at post-Cyberball. The IRAP indicated that reductions in implicit self-esteem may be due to increases in 'Me-Negative' and 'Others-Positive' biases (rather than reductions in 'Me-Positive' bias). Limitations: The current study involved a non-clinical sample and so findings cannot be generalized to clinical paranoia. Conclusions: These findings are consistent with previous evidence that paranoia is associated with negative self-evaluations, whereas positive self-evaluations can persist in paranoia. They also provide support for the suggestion that investigations of self-esteem in paranoia should extend beyond global self-esteem and might benefit from a distinction between positive and negative components.     A harmonic family of dielectric flow solutions with maximal supersymmetry

    We construct a new harmonic family: dielectric flow solutions with maximal supersymmetry in eleven-dimensional supergravity. These solutions are asymptotically AdS_4 x S^7, while in the infra-red the M2 branes are dielectrically polarized into M5 branes. These solutions are holographically dual to vacua of the mass deformed theory on M2 branes. They also provide an interesting insight on the supergravity solutions sourced by giant gravitons, allowing one to see how supergravity solves the giant graviton puzzle.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX. reference adde

    Spectral Functions in Holographic Renormalization Group Flows

    The spectrum of two-point functions in a holographic renormalization group flow from an ultraviolet (UV) to an infrared (IR) conformal fixed point is necessarily continuous. For a toy model, the spectral function does not only show the expected UV and IR behaviours, but other interesting features such as sharp peaks and oscillations in the UV. The spectral functions for the SU(3)xU(1) flow in AdS_4/CFT_3 and the SU(2)xU(1) flow in AdS_5/CFT_4 are calculated numerically. They exhibit a simple cross-over behaviour and reproduce the conformal dimensions of the dual operators in the UV and IR conformal phases.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures v2: added referene

    Holographic Renormalization Group Flows: The View from Ten Dimensions

    The holographic description of supersymmetric RG flows in supergravity is considered from both the five-dimensional and ten-dimensional perspectives. An N=1* flow of N=4 super-Yang Mills is considered in detail, and the infra-red limit is studied in terms of IIB supergravity in ten dimensions. Depending on the vevs and the direction of approach to the core, the supergravity solution can be interpreted in terms of either 5-branes or 7-branes.
