Single photon states with arbitrarily fast asymptotic power-law fall-off of
energy density and photodetection rate are explicitly constructed. This goes
beyond the recently discovered tenth power-law of the Hellwarth-Nouchi photon
which itself superseded the long-standing seventh power-law of the Amrein

Doing evolution in economic geography
Evolutionary approaches in economic geography face questions about the relationships between their concepts, theories, methods, politics, and policy implications. Amidst the growing but unsettled consensus that evolutionary approaches should employ plural methodologies, the aims here are, first, to identify some of the difficult issues confronting those working with different frameworks. The concerns comprise specifying and connecting research objects, subjects, and levels; handling agency and context; engaging and integrating the quantitative and the qualitative; comparing cases; and, considering politics, policy, and praxis. Second, the purpose is to articulate a distinctive geographical political economy approach, methods, and illustrative examples in addressing these issues. Bringing different views of evolution in economic geography into dialogue and disagreement renders methodological pluralism a means toward improved understanding and explanation rather than an end in itself. Confronting such thorny matters needs to be embedded in our research practices and supported by greater openness; more and better substantiation of our conceptual, theoretical, and empirical claims; enhanced critical reflection; and deeper engagement with politics, policy, and praxis
Hysteresis loops of Co-Pt perpendicular magnetic multilayers
We develop a phenomenological model to study magnetic hysteresis in two
samples designed as possible perpendicular recording media. A stochastic
cellular automata model captures cooperative behavior in the nucleation of
magnetic domains. We show how this simple model turns broad hysteresis loops
into loops with sharp drops like those observed in these samples, and explains
their unusual features. We also present, and experimentally verify, predictions
of this model, and suggest how insights from this model may apply more

The first 100 kidney transplants from living related donors at Groote Schuur Hospital
Improved results with cadaver kidney transplantation and the increase in the number of cadaver organs have caused the continued use of donor kidneys from living relatives to be questioned. In this analysis of our first 100 renal transplants involving a living related donor, the 5-year graft survival rate was 70%. The 5-year graft survival rate for recipients of grafts from HLA-identical donors was 81%, as opposed to the 64% survival rate for grafts from one-haplotype donors. Recipients of grafts from one-haplotype-matched donors who received donor-specific blood transfusions demonstrated better graft survival than those who were not transfused. This analysis demonstrates that the results of living related kidney transplantation are good, and suggests that donor-specific blood transfusions may be beneficial

Elasticity of Stiff Polymer Networks
We study the elasticity of a two-dimensional random network of rigid rods
(``Mikado model''). The essential features incorporated into the model are the
anisotropic elasticity of the rods and the random geometry of the network. We
show that there are three distinct scaling regimes, characterized by two
distinct length scales on the elastic backbone. In addition to a critical
rigidiy percolation region and a homogeneously elastic regime we find a novel
intermediate scaling regime, where elasticity is dominated by bending

Market and Mission
The focus of this article is how the market forces in the field of professional psychology affect the Christian training programs. After a brief review of some of the changes in the field over the past three decades, current national and Christian community trends are presented. Although market forces affect the manner in which the Christian training programs move forward, they do not change the mission of these programs. The mission has not been accomplished. Therefore, the task of training Christian professional psychologists continues. </jats:p
Phylogeography and dispersal in the velvet gecko (Oedura lesueurii), and potential implications for conservation of an endangered snake (Hoplocephalus bungaroides).
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: To conserve critically endangered predators, we also need to conserve the prey species upon which they depend. Velvet geckos (Oedura lesueurii) are a primary prey for the endangered broad-headed snake (Hoplocephalus bungaroides), which is restricted to sandstone habitats in southeastern Australia. We sequenced the ND2 gene from 179 velvet geckos, to clarify the lizards' phylogeographic history and landscape genetics. We also analysed 260 records from a longterm (3-year) capture-mark-recapture program at three sites, to evaluate dispersal rates of geckos as a function of locality, sex and body size. RESULTS: The genetic analyses revealed three ancient lineages in the north, south and centre of the species' current range. Estimates of gene flow suggest low dispersal rates, constrained by the availability of contiguous rocky habitat. Mark-recapture records confirm that these lizards are highly sedentary, with most animals moving < 30 m from their original capture site even over multi-year periods. CONCLUSION: The low vagility of these lizards suggests that they will be slow to colonise vacant habitat patches; and hence, efforts to restore degraded habitats for broad-headed snakes may need to include translocation of lizards
On the cross-section of Dark Matter using substructure infall into galaxy clusters
We develop a statistical method to measure the interaction cross-section of
Dark Matter, exploiting the continuous minor merger events in which small
substructures fall into galaxy clusters. We find that by taking the ratio of
the distances between the galaxies and Dark Matter, and galaxies and gas in
accreting sub-halos, we form a quantity that can be statistically averaged over
a large sample of systems whilst removing any inherent line-of-sight
projections. In order to interpret this ratio as a cross-section of Dark Matter
we derive an analytical description of sub-halo infall which encompasses; the
force of the main cluster potential, the drag on a gas sub-halo, a model for
Dark Matter self-interactions and the resulting sub-halo drag, the force on the
gas and galaxies due to the Dark Matter sub-halo potential, and finally the
buoyancy on the gas and Dark Matter. We create mock observations from
cosmological simulations of structure formation and find that collisionless
Dark Matter becomes physically separated from X-ray gas by up to 20h^-1 kpc.
Adding realistic levels of noise, we are able to predict achievable constraints
from observational data. Current archival data should be able to detect a
difference in the dynamical behaviour of Dark Matter and standard model
particles at 6 sigma, and measure the total interaction cross-section sigma/m
with 68% confidence limits of +/- 1cm2g^-1. We note that this method is not
restricted by the limited number of major merging events and is easily extended
to large samples of clusters from future surveys which could potentially push
statistical errors to 0.1cm^2g^-1.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
