Quantum-mechanical model of the Kerr-Newman black hole
We consider a Hamiltonian quantum theory of stationary spacetimes containing
a Kerr-Newman black hole. The physical phase space of such spacetimes is just
six-dimensional, and it is spanned by the mass , the electric charge and
angular momentum of the hole, together with the corresponding canonical
momenta. In this six-dimensional phase space we perform a canonical
transformation such that the resulting configuration variables describe the
dynamical properties of Kerr-Newman black holes in a natural manner. The
classical Hamiltonian written in terms of these variables and their conjugate
momenta is replaced by the corresponding self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator and
an eigenvalue equation for the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass of the hole,
from the point of view of a distant observer at rest, is obtained. In a certain
very restricted sense, this eigenvalue equation may be viewed as a sort of
"Schr\"odinger equation of black holes". Our "Schr\"odinger equation" implies
that the ADM mass, electric charge and angular momentum spectra of black holes
are discrete, and the mass spectrum is bounded from below. Moreover, the
spectrum of the quantity , where is the angular momentum per
unit mass of the hole, is strictly positive when an appropriate self-adjoint
extension is chosen. The WKB analysis yields the result that the large
eigenvalues of , and are of the form , where is an
integer. It turns out that this result is closely related to Bekenstein's
proposal on the discrete horizon area spectrum of black holes.Comment: 30 pages, 3 figures, RevTe
Curvature singularities, tidal forces and the viability of Palatini f(R) gravity
In a previous paper we showed that static spherically symmetric objects
which, in the vicinity of their surface, are well-described by a polytropic
equation of state with 3/2<Gamma<2 exhibit a curvature singularity in Palatini
f(R) gravity. We argued that this casts serious doubt on the validity of
Palatini f(R) gravity as a viable alternative to General Relativity. In the
present paper we further investigate this characteristic of Palatini f(R)
gravity in order to clarify its physical interpretation and consequences.Comment: 15 pages. CQG in press. Part of the material moved to an appendix,

On the analysis of the pi -> e nu gamma experimental data
The most general amplitude for the radiative pion decay pi -> e nu gamma
including terms beyond V-A theory is considered. The experimental constraints
on the decay amplitude components are discussed. A model independent
presentation of the results of high statistics and high resolution experiments
is suggested.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Cosmological perturbations in Palatini modified gravity
Two approaches to the study of cosmological density perturbations in modified
theories of Palatini gravity have recently been discussed. These utilise,
respectively, a generalisation of Birkhoff's theorem and a direct linearization
of the gravitational field equations. In this paper these approaches are
compared and contrasted. The general form of the gravitational lagrangian for
which the two frameworks yield identical results in the long-wavelength limit
is derived. This class of models includes the case where the lagrangian is a
power-law of the Ricci curvature scalar. The evolution of density perturbations
in theories of the type is investigated numerically. It is
found that the results obtained by the two methods are in good agreement on
sufficiently large scales when the values of the parameters (b,c) are
consistent with current observational constraints. However, this agreement
becomes progressively poorer for models that differ significantly from the
standard concordance model and as smaller scales are considered
Measurement of the near-threshold cross section using initial-state radiation
We report measurements of the exclusive cross section for , where or , in the center-of-mass energy range from the threshold to with initial-state radiation. The
analysis is based on a data sample collected with the Belle detector with an
integrated luminosity of 673 .Comment: Presented at EPS07 and LP07 conferences, published in PRD(RC
Observation of Two Resonant Structures in e+e- to pi+ pi- psi(2S) via Initial State Radiation at Belle
The cross section for e+e- to pi+ pi- psi(2S) between threshold and
\sqrt{s}=5.5 GeV is measured using 673 fb^{-1} of data on and off the
\Upsilon(4S) resonance collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Two resonant
structures are observed in the pi+ pi- psi(2S) invariant mass distribution, one
at 4361\pm 9\pm 9 MeV/c2 with a width of 74\pm 15\pm 10 MeV/c2, and another at
4664\pm 11\pm 5 MeV/c2 with a width of 48\pm 15\pm 3 MeV/c2, if the mass
spectrum is parameterized with the coherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions.
These values do not match those of any of the known charmonium states.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, version to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Evidence for B to K eta' gamma Decays at Belle
We present the results of a search for the radiative decay (B -> K eta'
gamma) and find evidence for (B^+ -> K^+ eta' gamma) decays at the 3.3 standard
deviation level with a partial branching fraction of (3.6 +/- 1.2 +/- 0.4) x
10e-6, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This
measurement is restricted to the region of combined (K eta') invariant mass
less than 3.4GeVc^2. A 90% confidence level upper limit of 6.4 x 10e-6 is
obtained for the decay (B^0 -> K^0 eta' gamma) in the same (K eta') invariant
mass region. These results are obtained from a 605 fb^-1 data sample containing
657 x 10e6 B anti-B pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle
detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to PRD-RC on 6/8/0
Search for the lepton-family-number nonconserving decay \mu -> e + \gamma
The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number
violating decay \mu -> e + \gamma, is described. The spectrometer system, the
calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the
sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on
the branching ratio of \mu -> e + \gamma) < 1.2 x 10^{-11} was obtained
