Integrating Research Data Management into Geographical Information Systems
Ocean modelling requires the production of high-fidelity computational meshes
upon which to solve the equations of motion. The production of such meshes by
hand is often infeasible, considering the complexity of the bathymetry and
coastlines. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is therefore a
key component to discretising the region of interest and producing a mesh
appropriate to resolve the dynamics. However, all data associated with the
production of a mesh must be provided in order to contribute to the overall
recomputability of the subsequent simulation. This work presents the
integration of research data management in QMesh, a tool for generating meshes
using GIS. The tool uses the PyRDM library to provide a quick and easy way for
scientists to publish meshes, and all data required to regenerate them, to
persistent online repositories. These repositories are assigned unique

The Synthesis of 4-Ethyl-2-propyl-3-substitutedpyrrolo[ 3,4-b]quinoline-1,9-dione Derivatives from 3,3-Dichloro-4-ethyl-thieno[3,4-b]quinoline-1,9-dione and Propylamine
The preparation, spectral properties and structure elucidations of the hitherto undocumented 3-oxo-, 3-thioxo-, 3-propylimino-, 3-imino-, and 3-propylamino- derivatives of 4-ethyl-2-propyl-2,3-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,4-b]quinoline-1,9-dione are described. Mechanistic aspects relating particularly to the formation of the latter two unprecedented products are considered. Magnetic anisotropic effects (deshielding/line broadening of signals) are exhibited by the α-methylene protons of the 4-ethyl moiety in the 1H NMR spectra of the first four of the above, and in several 3,3-dichloro-thieno[3,4-b]quinoline-1,9-diones and intramolecular H-bonded, 1,2-dialkyl-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid precursor substrates.KEYWORDS: 3-Imino-, 3-propylamino-, 3-propylimino-, 3-oxo-, 3-thioxo-substituted 4-ethyl-2-propyl- 2,3-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,4-b]quinoline- 1,9-diones, 4-methyl-, 4-propyl-substituted-3,3-dichloro-thieno[3,4-b]quinoline-1,9-diones, intramolecular H-bonding, magnetic anisotropic effects
Dasatinib as a treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Identification of a systemically acting and universal small molecule therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy would be an enormous advance for this condition. Based on evidence gained from studies on mouse genetic models, we have identified tyrosine phosphorylation and degradation of β-dystroglycan as a key event in the aetiology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Thus, preventing tyrosine phosphorylation and degradation of β-dystroglycan presents itself as a potential therapeutic strategy. Using the dystrophic sapje zebrafish, we have investigated the use of tyrosine kinase and other inhibitors to treat the dystrophic symptoms in this model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dasatinib, a potent and specific Src tyrosine kinase inhibitor, was found to decrease the levels of β-dystroglycan phosphorylation on tyrosine and to increase the relative levels of non-phosphorylated β-dystroglycan in sapje zebrafish. Furthermore, dasatinib treatment resulted in the improved physical appearance of the sapje zebrafish musculature and increased swimming ability as measured by both duration and distance of swimming of dasatinib-treated fish compared with control animals. These data suggest great promise for pharmacological agents that prevent the phosphorylation of β-dystroglycan on tyrosine and subsequent steps in the degradation pathway as therapeutic targets for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Exploring the barriers to South Asian cricket players’ entry and progression in coaching
Whilst people of South Asian descent compose over 30% of the cricket playing population of England, they represent only 6% of registered coaches. In February 2014, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) commissioned the authors to explore this problem further. We conducted interviews with 33 South Asian cricket coaches and players from Yorkshire and East London. The data were collected over a three-month period and were a mixture of one-to-one, group, face-to-face and telephone interviews, transcribed verbatim and analysed iteratively by the first two authors. Our findings suggest that coaching is perceived as a “low value and low priority” activity in South Asian communities who feel separate from the official systems of governance, both locally and nationally. There is a clear feeling that, in subtle yet pervasive ways, cricket is still run “by white people, for white people”. Participants also suggested that the existing coach education pathways and materials were not as accessible to South Asians, who are often socialised into a different style of cricket that is more open, flexible, creative and attacking than the traditional English style that was perceived to be slow, defensive and technically precise. The lack of visible role models, especially at the county level, was also seen as a major problem, with many of our participants fearing that such roles were not accessible to them. We conclude our paper with three ‘chains’ of recommendations made to the ECB concerning: 1) modifying the system; 2) promoting the value of cricket coaching in South Asian communities; and 3) making coach education and county coaching roles more accessible

Preliminary Investigations of Eddy Current Effects on a Spinning Disk
The design of the positron source target for the International Linear Collider (ILC) envisions a Ti6Al4V wheel rotating in a large magnetic field (5-10 Tesla) being impacted by a photon beam to produce positrons. One of the many challenges for this system is determining how large a motor will be needed to spin the shaft. The wheel spinning in the magnetic field induces an eddy current in the wheel, which retards the spinning motion of the wheel. Earlier calculations by Mayhall [1] have shown that those eddy forces could be quite large, and resulted in the preliminary design being moved from a solid disk to a rim and spoke design, as shown in Figure 1. A series of experiments with a spinning metal disk were run at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) to provide experimental validation of the Maxwell 3D simulations. This report will give a brief outline of the experimental setup and results. In addition, earlier work by Smythe [2] will be used to compare with the experimental results
Exploring the association between recent concussion, subconcussive impacts and depressive symptoms in male Australian Football players
Objectives: To explore the association between depressive symptoms and recent head-related trauma (diagnosed concussion, subconcussive impacts) in semiprofessional male Australian Football (AF) players.
Methods: Sixty-nine semiprofessional male players from a West Australian Football League (WAFL) club participated in the study (M age =21.81, SD=2.91 years). Depressive symptoms were measured using the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Injuries and potential confounding variables (eg, pre-existing mental health condition; alcohol or drug hangovers; experiencing a stressful event) were self-reported anonymously using the WAFL Injury Report Survey. Both tools were administered every 2-weeks over the first 22-weeks of the WAFL season. Controlling for potential confounding variables and other injuries, a repeated measures generalised estimating equations model assessed the risk of clinically relevant depressive symptoms occurring, when diagnosed concussion or subconcussive impacts were experienced.
Results: A total of 10 concussions and 183 subconcussive impacts were reported. Players who experienced a concussion were almost nine times more likely to experience clinically relevant depressive symptoms (OR 8.88, 95% CI 2.65 to 29.77, p \u3c 0.001). Although elevated, depressive symptoms following subconcussive impacts were not statistically significant (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.92, p = 0.641).
Conclusion: These findings indicate that semiprofessional AF athletes may be at risk of experiencing depressive symptoms after concussion. Severity (concussion vs subconcussive impacts) and dose (number of impacts) appear to have an important relationship with depressive symptom outcomes in this cohort and should be considered for further research and management of player welfare. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2020. Numerical Modeling of Impact Initiation of High Explosives
We performed continuum mechanics simulations to examine the behavior of energetic materials in Ballistic Chamber Impact (BIC) experiments, using an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian code (ALE3D). Our simulations revealed that interface friction plays an important role in inducing the formation of shear bands, which result in 'hot spots' for ignition. The temperature localization during BIC impact was found to be significant in materials with high yield strength. In those materials, there are multiple locations inside shear bands can achieve temperatures exceeding the threshold temperature for reaction. In addition, we investigated the relevant parameters influencing the pressure profile of a BIC test by numerical analysis from a simple phenomenological model. To our surprise, we found that the peaks of BIC pressure profiles not only can be a result of multi-center chemical reactions, but can also arise from factors associated apparatus configuration
