A renormalization fixed point for Lorenz maps

A Lorenz map is a Poincar\'e map for a three-dimensional Lorenz flow. We describe the theory of renormalization for Lorenz maps with a critical point and prove that a restriction of the renormalization operator acting on such maps has a hyperbolic fixed point. The proof is computer assisted and we include a detailed exposition on how to make rigorous estimates using a computer as well as the implementation of the estimates.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure

In that period alcoholic drinks became a political issue. Protest movements accused the new masters of jeopardizing the quality of the wine with the presence of fungal disease, of doctoring drinks, of multiplying cafĂ©s serving Spanish wines, but also of spreading alcoholism which was supposed to be caused by the huge amounts of distilled sugar beet or potatoes dealt out by large Prussian vineyard properties. It is however the police and tax legislation voted by the 2nd Reich, although belatedly, that made it possible to eliminate phylloxera, to do away with adulterated drinks and to stave off alcoholism.

A look backwards on the older spirit of capitalism. Was 19th-century capitalism more “pure” than ours? And was the discourse then held by entrepreneurs and theoreticians less contradictory than it is now? While analysing some samples of their writings – be they with a public or with a private intent – and confronting these writings with the practises of their authors, this paper aims at pointing to the constant presence of contradictions or alternatives that seem to be indispensable to the long life of the system. These were other times! But on the nature of their activity, on the family or property dimension of their companies, or on competition, the discourse of 19th-century traders and manufacturers did not express less perplexity nor ambiguity than the discourse of today’s businessmen

We prove that on any compact manifold MnM^n with boundary, there exist a conformal class CC such that for any riemannian metric g∈Cg\in C, λ1(Mn,g)Vol(Mn,g)2/n<n.Vol(Sn,gcan)2/n\lambda_1(M^n,g)Vol(M^n,g)^{2/n}< n.Vol(S^n,g_{\textrm{can}})^{2/n} and σ1(M,g,ρ)M(∂M)Vol(M)2−nn<n.Vol(Sn,gcan)2/n\sigma_1(M,g,\rho)\mathcal M(\partial M)Vol(M)^{\frac{2-n}n}<n.Vol(S^n,g_{\textrm{can}})^{2/n}, where λ1(Mn,g)\lambda_1(M^n,g) denotes the first positive eigenvalue of the Neumann laplacian on (M,g)(M,g), σ1(M,g,ρ)\sigma_1(M,g,\rho) the first positive Steklov eigenvalue for the density ρ\rho on ∂M\partial M, and M(∂M)=∫∂Mρdvg\mathcal M(\partial M)=\int_{\partial M}\rho dv_g. The proof relies on a handle decomposition of the manifold. We also prove that the conformal volume of (M,C)(M,C) is Vol(Sn,gcan)Vol(S^n,g_{\textrm{can}}), and that the Friedlander-Nadirashvili and the M\"obius volume of MM are equal to those of the sphere. If MM is a domain in a space form, CC is the conformal class of the canonical metric.Comment: 19 pages, in French, 5 figure

In this article, I focus on the social relations related to settler colonialism (Coulthard, 2018; Wolfe, 2006) in a non-Indigenous school context. The objective pursued in this article is to analyze how the logic of erasure of settler colonialism (Veracini, 2011) manifests itself in the “settler school”. Using an interactionist approach (Blumer, 1962), I describe the “definition of the situation” of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people through the discourse of non-Indigenous teachers in a colonial context. Thematic analysis of interviews with six high school teachers in various subjects allows us to identify that the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous is defined as external to the school situation of non-Indigenous in a logic of erasure of colonialism and Indigenous people.

A three-dimensional principal component analysis approach for exploratory analysis of hyperspectral data: identification of ovarian cancer samples based on Raman microspectroscopy imaging of blood plasma

    Get PDF
Hyperspectral imaging is a powerful tool to obtain both chemical and spatial information of biological systems. However, few algorithms are capable of working with full three-dimensional images, in which reshaping or averaging procedures are often performed to reduce the data complexity. Herein, we propose a new algorithm of three-dimensional principal component analysis (3D-PCA) for exploratory analysis of complete 3D spectrochemical images obtained through Raman microspectroscopy. Blood plasma samples of ten patients (5 healthy controls, 5 diagnosed with ovarian cancer) were analysed by acquiring hyperspectral imaging in the fingerprint region (∌780–1858 cm−1). Results show that 3D-PCA can clearly differentiate both groups based on its scores plot, where higher loadings coefficients were observed in amino acids, lipids and DNA regions. 3D-PCA is a new methodology for exploratory analysis of hyperspectral imaging, providing fast information for class differentiation

Cost-Consequence Analysis Alongside a Randomised Controlled Trial of Hospital Versus Telephone Follow-Up after Treatment for Endometrial Cancer

Background Regular outpatient follow-up programmes are usually offered to patients following treatment for gynaecological and other cancers. Despite the substantial resources involved in providing these programmes, there is evidence that routine follow-up programmes do not affect survival or the likelihood of detecting recurrence and may not meet patient needs. Alternative follow-up modalities may offer the same outcomes at lower cost. We examined the costs of using telephone-based routine follow-up of women treated for endometrial cancer undertaken by specialist gynaecology oncology nurses in comparison to routine hospital-based follow-up. Methods The ENDCAT trial randomised 259 women at five centres in the north west of England with a known diagnosis of Stage I endometrial cancer who had completed primary treatment on a 1:1 basis to receive either standard hospital outpatient follow-up or a telephone follow-up intervention administered by specialist nurses. A cost-consequence analysis was undertaken in which we compared costs to the health system and to individuals with the trial’s co-primary outcomes of psychological morbidity and participant satisfaction with information received. Results Psychological morbidity, psychosocial needs, patient satisfaction and quality of life did not differ between arms. Patients randomised to telephone follow-up underwent more and longer consultations. There was no difference in total health service mean per patient costs at 6 months (mean difference £8, 95% percentile confidence interval: − £147 to £141) or 12 months (mean difference: − £77, 95% percentile confidence interval: − £334 to £154). Estimated return journey costs per patient for hospital consultations were £11.47. Productivity costs were approximately twice as high under hospital follow-up. Conclusion Telephone follow-up was estimated to be cost-neutral for the NHS and may free up clinic time for other patients. There was some evidence that telephone follow-up may be more efficient for patients and wider society, and is not associated with additional psychological morbidity, lower patient satisfaction or reduced quality of life
