ESR evidence for disordered magnetic phase from ultra-small carbon nanotubes embedded in zeolite nanochannels
A multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study provides evidence for
the occurrence of low temperature ferromagnetic/spin-glass behavior in aligned
arrays of sub-nanometer single walled carbon nanotubes confined in zeolite
nano-channels, owing to sp2-type non-bonding carbon associated localized states
with density of ~3 x 1019 /g. Features related to the much anticipated
conduction ESR are not detected. In the paramagnetic phase, the ESR linewidth
is found to be weakly dependent on microwave frequency.Comment: Accepted to be published in EuroPhysics Letter
Shape-selective zeolite catalysis for bioplastics production
Biodegradable and renewable polymers, such as polylactic acid, are benign alternatives for petrochemical-based plastics. Current production of polylactic acid via its key building block lactide, the cyclic dimer of lactic acid, is inefficient in terms of energy, time, and feedstock use. We present a direct zeolite-based catalytic process, which converts lactic acid into lactide. The shape-selective properties of zeolites are essential to attain record lactide yields, outperforming those of the current multistep process by avoiding both racemization and side-product formation. The highly productive process is strengthened by facile recovery and practical reactivation of the catalyst, which remains structurally fit during at least six consecutive reactions, and by the ease of solvent and side-product recycling
Expression of the alternative oxidase mitigates beta-amyloid production and toxicity in model systems
Mitochondrial dysfunction has been widely associated with the pathology of Alzheimer's disease, but there is no consensus on whether it is a cause or consequence of disease, nor on the precise mechanism(s). We addressed these issues by testing the effects of expressing the alternative oxidase AOX from Ciona intestinalis, in different models of AD pathology. AOX can restore respiratory electron flow when the cytochrome segment of the mitochondrial respiratory chain is inhibited, supporting ATP synthesis, maintaining cellular redox homeostasis and mitigating excess superoxide production at respiratory complexes I and III. In human HEK293-derived cells, AOX expression decreased the production of beta-amyloid peptide resulting from antimycin inhibition of respiratory complex III. Because hydrogen peroxide was neither a direct product nor substrate of AOX, the ability of AOX to mimic antioxidants in this assay must be indirect. In addition, AOX expression was able to partially alleviate the short lifespan of Drosophila models neuronally expressing human beta-amyloid peptides, whilst abrogating the induction of markers of oxidative stress. Our findings support the idea of respiratory chain dysfunction and excess ROS production as both an early step and as a pathologically meaningful target in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis, supporting the concept of a mitochondrial vicious cycle underlying the disease. Magneto-electrodynamics at high frequencies in the antiferromagnetic and superconducting states of DyNi_2B_2C
We report the observation of novel behaviour in the radio frequency (rf) and
microwave response of DyNi_2B_2C over a wide range of temperature (T) and
magnetic field (H) in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC)
states. At microwave frequencies of 10 GHz, the T dependence of the surface
impedance Z_s=R_s+iX_s was measured which yields the T dependence of the
complex conductivity \sigma_1-i\sigma_2 in the SC and AFM states. At radio
frequencies (4 MHz), the H and T dependence of the penetration depth
\lambda(T,H) were measured. The establishment of antiferromagnetic order at
T_N=10.3 K results in a marked decrease in the scattering of charge carriers,
leading to sharp decreases in R_s and X_s. However, R_s and X_s differ from
each other in the AFM state. We show that the results are consistent with
conductivity relaxation whence the scattering rate becomes comparable to the
microwave frequency. The rf measurements yield a rich dependence of the
scattering on the magnetic field near and below T_N. Anomalous decrease of
scattering at moderate applied fields is observed at temperatures near and
above T_N, and arises due to a crossover from a negative magnetoresistance
state, possibly associated with a loss of spin disorder scattering at low
fields, to a positive magnetoresistance state associated with the metallic
nature. The normal state magnetoresistance is positive at all temperatures for
\mu_0H>2T and at all fields for T>15K. Several characteristic field and
temperature scales associated with metamagnetic transitions (H_M1(T), H_M2(T))
and onset of spin disorder H_D(T), in addition to T_c, T_N and H_c2(T) are

Kondo Effect on Mesoscopic Scale (Review)
Following the discovery of the Kondo effect the bulk transport and magnetic
behavior of the dilute magnetic alloys have been successfully described. In the
last fifteen years new directions have been developed as the study of the
systems of reduced dimensions and the artificial atoms so called quantum dots.
In this review the first subject is reviewed starting with the scanning
tunneling microscope (STM) study of a single magnetic impurity. The next
subject is the reduction of the amplitude of the Kondo effect in samples of
reduced dimension which was explained by the surface magnetic anisotropy which
blocks the motion of the integer spin nearby the surface. The electron
dephasing and energy relaxation experiments are discussed with the possible
explanation including the surface anisotropy, where the situation in cases of
integer and half-integer spins is very different. Finally, the present
situation of the theory of dynamical structural defects is briefly presented

Role of Esrrg in the Fibrate-Mediated Regulation of Lipid Metabolism Genes in Human ApoA-I Transgenic Mice
We have used a new ApoA-I transgenic mouse model to identify by global gene expression profiling, candidate genes that affect lipid and lipoprotein metabolism in response to fenofibrate treatment. Multilevel bioinformatical analysis and stringent selection criteria (2-fold change, 0% false discovery rate) identified 267 significantly changed genes involved in several molecular pathways. The fenofibrate-treated group did not have significantly altered levels of hepatic human APOA-I mRNA and plasma ApoA-I compared with the control group. However, the treatment increased cholesterol levels to 1.95-fold mainly due to the increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. The observed changes in HDL are associated with the upregulation of genes involved in phospholipid biosynthesis and lipid hydrolysis, as well as phospholipid transfer protein. Significant upregulation was observed in genes involved in fatty acid transport and β-oxidation, but not in those of fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis, Krebs cycle and gluconeogenesis. Fenofibrate changed significantly the expression of seven transcription factors. In situ mantle cell lymphoma: clinical implications of an incidental finding with indolent clinical behavior
Background Cyclin D1-positive B cells are occasionally found in the mantle zones of reactive lymphoid follicles, a condition that has been called 'in situ mantle cell lymphoma'. The clinical significance of this lesion remains uncertain. Design and Methods The clinical and pathological characteristics, including SOX11 expression, of 23 cases initially diagnosed as in situ mantle cell lymphoma were studied. Results Seventeen of the 23 cases fulfilled the criteria for in situ mantle cell lymphoma. In most cases, the lesions were incidental findings in reactive lymph nodes. The t(11; 14) was detected in all eight cases examined. SOX11 was positive in seven of 16 cases (44%). Five cases were associated with other small B-cell lymphomas. In two cases, both SOX11-positive, the in situ mantle cell lymphoma lesions were discovered after the diagnosis of overt lymphoma; one 4 years earlier, and one 3 years later. Twelve of the remaining 15 patients had a follow-up of at least 1 year (median 2 years; range, 1-19.5), of whom 11 showed no evidence of progression, including seven who were not treated. Only one of 12 patients with an in situ mantle cell lymphoma lesion and no diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma at the time developed an overt lymphoma, 4 years later; this case was also SOX11-positive. The six remaining cases were diagnosed as mantle cell lymphoma with a mantle zone pattern. Five were SOX11-positive and four of them were associated with lymphoma without a mantle zone pattern. Conclusions In situ mantle cell lymphoma lesions are usually an incidental finding with a very indolent behavior. These cases must be distinguished from mantle cell lymphoma with a mantle zone pattern and overt mantle cell lymphoma because they may not require therapeutic intervention
Optimal and continuous anaemia control in a cohort of dialysis patients in Switzerland
BACKGROUND: Guidelines for the management of anaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) recommend a minimal haemoglobin (Hb) target of 11 g/dL. Recent surveys indicate that this requirement is not met in many patients in Europe. In most studies, Hb is only assessed over a short-term period. The aim of this study was to examine the control of anaemia over a continuous long-term period in Switzerland. METHODS: A prospective multi-centre observational study was conducted in dialysed patients treated with recombinant human epoetin (EPO) beta, over a one-year follow-up period, with monthly assessments of anaemia parameters. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty patients from 27 centres, representing 14% of the dialysis population in Switzerland, were included. Mean Hb was 11.9 +/- 1.0 g/dL, and remained stable over time. Eighty-five % of the patients achieved mean Hb >or= 11 g/dL. Mean EPO dose was 155 +/- 118 IU/kg/week, being delivered mostly by subcutaneous route (64-71%). Mean serum ferritin and transferrin saturation were 435 +/- 253 microg/L and 30 +/- 11%, respectively. At month 12, adequate iron stores were found in 72.5% of patients, whereas absolute and functional iron deficiencies were observed in only 5.1% and 17.8%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that diabetes unexpectedly influenced Hb towards higher levels (12.1 +/- 0.9 g/dL; p = 0.02). One year survival was significantly higher in patients with Hb >or= 11 g/dL than in those with Hb <11 g/dL (19.7% vs 7.3%, p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: In comparison to European studies of reference, this survey shows a remarkable and continuous control of anaemia in Swiss dialysis centres. These results were reached through moderately high EPO doses, mostly given subcutaneously, and careful iron therapy management
