Applying Holland's Vocational Choice Theory in Sport Management
Holland’s (1997) vocational choice theory is used in vocational counseling to aid job seekers in finding occupations that fit their personality based on Holland’s RIASEC typology of personalities and work environments. The purpose of this research was to determine the Holland RIASEC profiles for occupations within the sport industry by having employees in intercollegiate athletics complete the Position Classification Inventory (Gottfredson & Holland, 1991). Results indicated the three-letter Holland code for the sport industry is SEC. The sport industry is dominated by the Social environment, evidenced by seven occupations possessing Social in the first letter of the profile and Social rating in the top two for all occupations. Seven occupations were primarily Social, three were Realistic, two were Enterprising, and two were Conventional. A MANOVA was also conducted to compare differences between occupational disciplines on the six Holland environments. Reexamining Student-Athlete GPA: Traditional vs. Athletic Variables
A sample of 674 first-year student-athletes at a midsize Midwestern university were examined each year over a five-year period (2004–2008) to determine if athletic variables were powerful enough to be used in conjunction with traditional predictors of college success to predict GPA. The four specific athletic variables unique to student-athletes (i.e., sport, coaching change, playing time, team winning percentage), were hypothesized to be as predictive as traditional variables. Pearson correlations revealed student-athletes were more likely to earn a high first-year GPA if they were female (r = .35), Caucasian (r = -.33), scored well on standardized tests (r = -.47), had a respectable high school GPA (r = .64), were ranked high in their graduating high school class (r = -.58), had a relatively large high school graduating class (r = .15) were not undecided about major (r = -.11), were not a member of a revenue sport (r = .33), and earned a considerable amount of playing time in their first year (r = -.15). Least squares linear regression demonstrated the traditional variables of gender (B = .16), race (B = -.26), standardized test scores (B = .03), high school GPA (B = .41), high school rank (B < -.01), and size of high school graduating class (B < .01) were most influential in predicting first-year student-athlete GPA
Indirect Detection of Secluded Supersymmetric Dark Matter
Weak-scale secluded sector dark matter can reproduce the observed dark matter
relic density with thermal freeze-out within that sector. If nature is
supersymmetric, three portals to the visible sector - a gauge portal, a Higgs
portal, and a gaugino portal - are present. We present gamma ray spectra
relevant for indirect detection of dark matter annihilation in such setups.
Since symmetries in the secluded sector can stabilize dark matter, -parity
is unnecessary, and we investigate the impact of -parity violation on
annihilation spectra. We present limits from the Fermi Large Area Telescope
observations of dwarf galaxies and projections for Cherenkov Telescope Array
observations of the galactic center. Many of our results are also applicable to
generic, non-supersymmetric setups.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figure
National Review of Interscholastic Competitive Balance Solutions Related to the Public-Private Debate
The public-private debate in interscholastic athletics has vexed athletic administrators and policy-makers for more than a century. The ability of private schools to secure athletic talent beyond the defined geographic borders that restrain public schools has led to competitive imbalance in many states. Competitive imbalance is evidenced by a disproportionate amount of athletic success demonstrated by private schools, often in the form of state championships. To determine the current landscape of interscholastic competitive balance, commissioners and high-ranking officials at each state association listed within the directory of the National Federation of State High Schools (NFHS) were contacted to identify their policies. Current competitive balance solutions include enrollment classifications, separate playoffs, enrollment multipliers and subtractors, tournament success factors, and consideration of socioeconomic factors. The results of this analysis provide an overview of competitive balance solutions being implemented in the United States
Characterizing Circumgalactic Gas around Massive Ellipticals at z~0.4 - II. Physical Properties and Elemental Abundances
We present a systematic investigation of the circumgalactic medium (CGM)
within projected distances d<160 kpc of luminous red galaxies (LRGs). The
sample comprises 16 intermediate-redshift (z=0.21-0.55) LRGs of stellar mass
M_star>1e11 M_sun. Combining far-ultraviolet Cosmic Origin Spectrograph spectra
from the Hubble Space Telescope and optical echelle spectra from the ground
enables a detailed ionization analysis based on resolved component structures
of a suite of absorption transitions, including the full HI Lyman series and
various ionic metal transitions. By comparing the relative abundances of
different ions in individually-matched components, we show that cool gas (T~1e4
K) density and metallicity can vary by more than a factor of ten in in an LRG
halo. Specifically, metal-poor absorbing components with <1/10 solar
metallicity are seen in 50% of the LRG halos, while gas with solar and
super-solar metallicity is also common. These results indicate a complex
multiphase structure and poor chemical mixing in these quiescent halos. We
calculate the total surface mass density of cool gas, \Sigma_cool, by applying
the estimated ionization fraction corrections to the observed HI column
densities. The radial profile of \Sigma_cool is best-described by a projected
Einasto profile of slope \alpha=1 and scale radius r_s=48 kpc. We find that
typical LRGs at z~0.4 contain cool gas mass of M_cool= (1-2) x1e10 M_sun at
d<160 kpc (or as much as 4x1e10 M_sun at d<500 kpc), comparable to the cool CGM
mass of star-forming galaxies. Furthermore, we show that high-ionization OVI
and low-ionization absorption species exhibit distinct velocity profiles,
highlighting their different physical origins. We discuss the implications of

Fall-related injury in the hospital
Background: 2 — 9% of adult patients who fall in the hospital suffer serious injury. There is little evidence-based literature to guide physicians when assessing hospitalized patients for fall-related injury. This study was designed to (1) identify demographic and/or clinical factors which predict serious fall-related injury among hospitalized adults, and (2) judge the adequacy of physician documentation related to adult patients who fell in the hospital. Methods: Nursing staff are required to report all hospital falls through our hospitals computerized Patient Safety Network (PSN). We performed a retrospective chart review of all PSN reported falls that occurred during 2010 in our 431-bed university acute care hospital. Patients less than18 years old, pregnant women, and prisoners were excluded. Results: Medical records were available for 286/293 (98%) of PSN-reported falls in 251 eligible patients. Falls occurred in 152 males (61%), and 99 females (39%). 48% of falls occurred while toileting. 25% (63/286) of falls were associated with injury, and 4% (11/286) with serious injury (laceration requiring closure or fracture). Compared to all fallers, patients with injury did not differ by gender (males 38/152 vs. females 25/99, p=0.96). Patients older than 64 years who fell were no more likely to suffer injury that younger adults (13/64 vs. 50/187, p = 0.31). In univariate analysis, patients who reported hitting their head, patients with pre-fall confusion, and patients who received narcotics on the day of fall were more likely to suffer injury (estimated odds ratios 6.04, 2.00 and 5.1, respectfully). In multivariate analysis, receiving a narcotic on the day of fall was the strongest predictor of injury (Table). 33% (21/63) of falls with injury had no physician documentation in the hospital record, and in only 21% (13/63) of cases, were falls with injury mentioned in the discharge summary. Conclusions: In this single-institution study, injury occurred in 25% of patients who fell, and serious injury in 4%. Compared to all falls, falls with injury did not vary by gender or age. Receiving a narcotic of the day of fall was the strongest predictor of injury. Physicians inconsistently provided medical record documentation of hospitalized patients who fell with injury.\u2

Objective: Identify factors that predict fall-related injury in hospitalized adults. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: 435-bed university hospital. Participants: Inpatients with reported falls in 2010. Results: Medical records were available for 286/293 (98%) of reported falls in 251 patients. 25% (63/286) of falls were associated with injury, 4% (11/286) with serious injury. Compared to all fallers, patients with injury did not differ by gender or age. In univariate analysis, patients who reported hitting their head, had pre-fall confusion, or who received narcotics within 24 hours before falling were more likely to suffer injury (estimated odds ratios 6.04, 2.00 and 5.1, respectfully). In multivariate analysis, receiving a narcotic prior to falling was the strongest predictor of injury (estimated odds ratio 5.59; 95% confidence intervals 2.14 — 14.65, p \u3c0.001). Conclusions: In this single-institution study, 25% of patients who fell suffered injury and 4% serious injury. Neither age nor gender predicted fall-related injury. Recent narcotic administration was the strongest predictor of injury. Strategies to prevent fall-related injury in the hospital should target patients receiving narcotics. When evaluating inpatients who have fallen, providers should be especially vigilant about injury in patients who have pre-fall confusion, hit their head, or have received recent narcotics
Creation of a Southwestern Authors Archive: Revisiting the LaVerne Harrell Clark Collection Ten Years Later
This article details the processing of the LaVerne Harrell Clark Photographic Collection by University of Arizona Poetry Center librarians, archivists, and interns, and the current status and next steps of the collection. The LaVerne Harrell Clark Photographic Collection, which contains thousands of portraits and candids of poets taken circa 1960-2000 by LaVerne Harrell Clark, the Poetry Center’s first director, is deeply entwined with the Poetry Center’s institutional identity. In addition, the authors explored ways in which the collection and the institution as a whole are positioned as uniquely Western and also of national significance. Those processing the collection became interested in the ways that this identity might affect other collections within the institution, such as the book collection and other archival collections. At the core of this exploration were questions about how the process of documentation and identity making occurs
