Dual fast-cycling superconducting synchrotron at Fermilab and a possible path to the future of high energy particle physics
We briefly outline shorter and longer term physics motivation for
constructing a dual, fast-cycling superconducting synchrotron accelerator
(DSFMR - Dual Super-Ferric Main Ring) in the Tevatron tunnel at Fermilab. We
discuss using this accelerator as a high-intensity dual neutrino beam source
for the long-baseline neutrino oscillation search experiments, and also as a
fast, dual pre-injector accelerator for the VLHC (Very Large Hadron Collider)
Ab initio and nuclear inelastic scattering studies of FeSi/GaAs heterostructures
The structure and dynamical properties of the FeSi/GaAs(001) interface
are investigated by density functional theory and nuclear inelastic scattering
measurements. The stability of four different atomic configurations of the
FeSi/GaAs multilayers is analyzed by calculating the formation energies and
phonon dispersion curves. The differences in charge density, magnetization, and
electronic density of states between the configurations are examined. Our
calculations unveil that magnetic moments of the Fe atoms tend to align in a
plane parallel to the interface, along the [110] direction of the FeSi
crystallographic unit cell. In some configurations, the spin polarization of
interface layers is larger than that of bulk FeSi. The effect of the
interface on element-specific and layer-resolved phonon density of states is
discussed. The Fe-partial phonon density of states measured for the FeSi
layer thickness of three monolayers is compared with theoretical results
obtained for each interface atomic configuration. The best agreement is found
for one of the configurations with a mixed Fe-Si interface layer, which
reproduces the anomalous enhancement of the phonon density of states below 10

Wskazania do
Metoda ta umożliwia choremu znamienny wzrost jakości życia dzięki analgetycznemu i przeciwniedokrwiennemu
efektowi stymulacji.
(Folia Cardiol. 2004; 11: 327–335

Phonon confinement and interface lattice dynamics of ultrathin high-rare earth sesquioxide films: the case of Eu₂O₃ on YSZ(001)
The spatial confinement of atoms at surfaces and interfaces significantly alters the lattice dynamics of thin films, heterostructures and multilayers. Ultrathin films with high dielectric constants (high-k) are of paramount interest for applications as gate layers in current and future integrated circuits. Here we report a lattice dynamics study of high-k EuO films with thicknesses of 21.3, 2.2, 1.3, and 0.8 nm deposited on YSZ(001). The Eu-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained from nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits broadening of the phonon peaks accompanied by up to a four-fold enhancement of the number of low-energy states compared to the ab initio calculated PDOS of a perfect EuO crystal. Our analysis demonstrates that while the former effect reflects the reduced phonon lifetimes observed in thin films due to scattering from lattice defects, the latter phenomenon arises from an ultrathin EuO layer formed between the thin EuO film and the YSZ(001) substrate. Thus, our work uncovers another potential source of vibrational anomalies in thin films and multilayers, which has to be cautiously considered
Electrically-driven phase transition in magnetite nanostructures
Magnetite (FeO), an archetypal transition metal oxide, has been
used for thousands of years, from lodestones in primitive compasses[1] to a
candidate material for magnetoelectronic devices.[2] In 1939 Verwey[3] found
that bulk magnetite undergoes a transition at T 120 K from a
high temperature "bad metal" conducting phase to a low-temperature insulating
phase. He suggested[4] that high temperature conduction is via the fluctuating
and correlated valences of the octahedral iron atoms, and that the transition
is the onset of charge ordering upon cooling. The Verwey transition mechanism
and the question of charge ordering remain highly controversial.[5-11] Here we
show that magnetite nanocrystals and single-crystal thin films exhibit an
electrically driven phase transition below the Verwey temperature. The
signature of this transition is the onset of sharp conductance switching in
high electric fields, hysteretic in voltage. We demonstrate that this
transition is not due to local heating, but instead is due to the breakdown of
the correlated insulating state when driven out of equilibrium by electrical
bias. We anticipate that further studies of this newly observed transition and
its low-temperature conducting phase will shed light on how charge ordering and
vibrational degrees of freedom determine the ground state of this important
compound.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
High resolution study of the Lambda p final state interaction in the reaction p + p -> K+ + (Lambda p)
The reaction pp -> K+ + (Lambda p) was measured at Tp=1.953 GeV and Theta = 0
deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda p final
state interaction. The large final state enhancement near the Lambda p
threshold can be described using the standard Jost-function approach. The
singlet and triplet scattering lengths and effective ranges are deduced by
fitting simultaneously the Lambda p invariant mass spectrum and the total cross
section data of the free Lambda p scattering.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B, 10 pages, 3 figure
Lattice dynamics of endotaxial silicide nanowires
Self-organized silicide nanowires are considered as main building blocks of
future nanoelectronics and have been intensively investigated. In
nanostructures, the lattice vibrational waves (phonons) deviate drastically
from those in bulk crystals, which gives rise to anomalies in thermodynamic,
elastic, electronic, and magnetic properties. Hence, a thorough understanding
of the physical properties of these materials requires a comprehensive
investigation of the lattice dynamics as a function of the nanowire size. We
performed a systematic lattice dynamics study of endotaxial FeSi nanowires,
forming the metastable, surface-stabilized -phase, which are in-plane
embedded into the Si(110) surface. The average widths of the nanowires ranged
from 24 to 3 nm, their lengths ranged from several m to about 100 nm. The
Fe-partial phonon density of states, obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering,
exhibits a broadening of the spectral features with decreasing nanowire width.
The experimental data obtained along and across the nanowires unveiled a
pronounced vibrational anisotropy that originates from the specific orientation
of the tetragonal -FeSi unit cell on the Si(110) surface. The
results from first-principles calculations are fully consistent with the
experimental data and allow for a comprehensive understanding of the lattice
dynamics of endotaxial silicide nanowires.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 3 table
