Electron Confinement, Orbital Ordering, and Orbital Moments in - Oxide Heterostructures
The (SrTiO)/(SrVO) multilayer system is studied
with first principles methods through the observed insulator-to-metal
transition with increasing thickness of the SrVO layer. When correlation
effects with reasonable magnitude are included, crystal field splittings from
the structural relaxations together with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) determines
the behavior of the electronic and magnetic structures. These confined slabs of
SrVO prefer =() orbital ordering of and
() orbitals within the plane, accompanied by
=(0,0) spin order (ferromagnetic alignment). The result is a
SOC-driven ferromagnetic Mott insulator. The orbital moment of 0.75
strongly compensates the spin moment on the sublattice. The
insulator-metal transition for (occurring between =4 and
=5) is reproduced. Unlike in the isoelectronic TiO/VO
(rutile structure) system and in spite of some similarities in orbital
ordering, no semi-Dirac point [{\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 102}, 166803 (2009)]
is encountered, but the insulator-to-metal transition occurs through a
different type of unusual phase. For n=5 this system is very near (or at) a
unique semimetallic state in which the Fermi energy is topologically determined
and the Fermi surface consists of identical electron and hole Fermi circles
centered at =0. The dispersion consists of what can be regarded as a
continuum of radially-directed Dirac points, forming a "Dirac circle".Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Origin of Superconductivity in Boron-doped Diamond
Superconductivity of boron-doped diamond, reported recently at T_c=4 K, is
investigated exploiting its electronic and vibrational analogies to MgB2. The
deformation potential of the hole states arising from the C-C bond stretch mode
is 60% larger than the corresponding quantity in MgB2 that drives its high Tc,
leading to very large electron-phonon matrix elements. The calculated coupling
strength \lambda ~ 0.5 leads to T_c in the 5-10 K range and makes phonon
coupling the likely mechanism. Higher doping should increase T_c somewhat, but
effects of three dimensionality primarily on the density of states keep doped
diamond from having a T_c closer to that of MgB2.Comment: Four pages with two embedded figures, corrected fig1. (To appear in

Electron and ion density depletions measured in the STS-3 orbiter wake
The third Space Shuttle flight on Columbia carried instrumentation to measure thermal plasma density and temperature. Two separate investigations, the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) and the Vehicle Charging and Potential Experiment (VCAP), carried a Langmuir Probe, and the VCAP also included a Spherical Retarding Potential Analyzer (SRPA). Only those measurements made while the PDP is in the payload bay are discussed here since the VCAP instrumentation remains in the payload bay at all times and the two measurements are compared. The wake behind a large structure (in this case the Space Shuttle Orbiter) flying through the ionospheric plasma is discussed. Much theoretical work was done regarding plasma wakes. The instrumentation on this mission gives the first data taken with a large vehicle in the ionospheric laboratory. First, the PDP Langmuir Probe and its data set will be presented, then the VCAP Langmuir Probe and SRPA with associated data. The agreement between the two data sets is discussed and then followed by some other PDP data which infers an even lower wake density
Prediction Model for the Life of Nickel-cadmium Batteries in Geosynchronous Orbit Satellites
A mathematical model is described which predicts the service life of nickel-cadmium batteries designed for geosynchronous orbit satellites. Regression analysis technique is used to analyze orbital data on second generation trickle charged batteries. The model gives average cell voltage as a function of design parameters, operating parameters and time. The voltage model has the properties of providing a good fit to the data, good predictive capability, and agreement with known battery performance characteristics. Average cell voltage can be predicted to within 0.02 volts for up to 8 years. This modeling shows that these batteries will operate reliably for 10 years. Third-generation batteries are expected to operate even longer
Anxious to see you: Neuroendocrine mechanisms of social vigilance and anxiety during adolescence.
Social vigilance is a behavioral strategy commonly used in adverse or changing social environments. In animals, a combination of avoidance and vigilance allows an individual to evade potentially dangerous confrontations while monitoring the social environment to identify favorable changes. However, prolonged use of this behavioral strategy in humans is associated with increased risk of anxiety disorders, a major burden for human health. Elucidating the mechanisms of social vigilance in animals could provide important clues for new treatment strategies for social anxiety. Importantly, during adolescence the prevalence of social anxiety increases significantly. We hypothesize that many of the actions typically characterized as anxiety behaviors begin to emerge during this time as strategies for navigating more complex social structures. Here, we consider how the social environment and the pubertal transition shape neural circuits that modulate social vigilance, focusing on the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and prefrontal cortex. The emergence of gonadal hormone secretion during adolescence has important effects on the function and structure of these circuits, and may play a role in the emergence of a notable sex difference in anxiety rates across adolescence. However, the significance of these changes in the context of anxiety is still uncertain, as not enough studies are sufficiently powered to evaluate sex as a biological variable. We conclude that greater integration between human and animal models will aid the development of more effective strategies for treating social anxiety
Suprathermal plasma observed on STS-3 Mission by plasma diagnostics package
Artificially produced electron beams were used extensively during the past decade as a means of probing the magnetosphere, and more recently as a means of actively controlling spacecraft potential. Experimentation in these areas has proven valuable, yet at times confusing, due to the interaction of the electron beam with the ambient plasma. The OSS-1/STS-3 Mission in March 1982 provided a unique opportunity to study beam-plasma interactions at an altitude of 240 km. On board for this mission was a Fast Pulse Electron Generator (FPEG). Measurements made by the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) while extended on the Orbiter RMS show modifications of the ion and electron energy distributions during electron beam injection. Observations made by charged particle detectors are discussed and related to measurements of Orbiter potential. Several of the PDP instruments, the joint PDP/FPEG experiment, and observations made during electron beam injection are described
Magnetic reconstruction at (001) CaMnO surface
The Mn-terminated (001) surface of the stable anti-ferromagnetic insulating
phase of cubic perovskite CaMnO is found to undergo a magnetic
reconstruction consisting on a spin-flip process at surface: each Mn spin at
the surface flips to pair with that of Mn in the subsurface layer. In spite of
very little Mn-O charge transfer at surface, the surface behavior is driven by
the states due to charge redistribution. These
results, based on local spin density theory, give a double exchange like
coupling that is driven by character, not additional charge, and may have
relevance to CMR materials.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures reference added Fig. 3 modified. Caption of Fig. 5

Association of Alfvén waves and proton cyclotron waves with electrostatic bipolar pulses: magnetic hole events observed by Polar
International audienceTwo magnetic hole events observed by Polar on 20 May 1996 when it was in the polar cap/polar cusp boundary layer are studied. Low-frequency waves, consisting of nonlinear Alfvén waves and large amplitude (±14nT peak-to-peak) obliquely propagating proton cyclotron waves (with frequency f~0.6 to 0.7 fcp), accompanied by electric bipolar pulses (electron holes) and electron heating have been observed located within magnetic holes. It is shown that low-frequency waves can provide free energy to drive some high frequency instabilities which saturate by trapping electrons, thus, leading to the generation of electron holes
Quantum limit of the triplet proximity effect in half-metal - superconductor junctions
We apply the scattering matrix approach to the triplet proximity effect in
superconductor-half metal structures. We find that for junctions that do not
mix different orbital modes, the zero bias Andreev conductance vanishes, while
the zero bias Josephson current is nonzero. We illustrate this finding on a
ballistic half-metal--superconductor (HS) and superconductor -- half-metal --
superconductor (SHS) junction with translation invariance along the interfaces,
and on HS and SHS systems where transport through the half-metallic region
takes place through a single conducting channel. Our calculations for these
physically single mode setups -- single mode point contacts and chaotic quantum
dots with single mode contacts -- illustrate the main strength of the
scattering matrix approach: it allows for studying systems in the quantum
mechanical limit, which is inaccessible for quasiclassical Green's function
methods, the main theoretical tool in previous works on the triplet proximity
effect.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures; v2: references added, typos correcte
Strawberry production in south-eastern Iowa as influenced by varieties, fertilizers and cultural practices
For many years strawberries have been an important cash crop in southeastern Iowa, particularly in the vicinity of Montrose. Dunlap has been the leading variety grown. The crop has been marketed by a small but unusually well-organized cooperative association known as the Iowa Fruit Company of Montrose, Iowa.
Several years ago the growers began to experience certain difficulties which materially reduced the value of their crop. Disease and drouth lowered yields. The soils devoted to strawberry culture began to show the effects of continuous cropping under the prevailing system of soil management. Prices fell to such an extent that receipts scarcely paid the harvesting and marketing expenses. The shipping quality of Dunlap became another factor. The berry was too soft to carry long distances and still maintain its attractiveness. Newer varieties grown in other sections of the country had more buyer appeal on the markets
