    Systems modelling and ethical decision algorithms for autonomous vehicle collisions

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Wolverhampton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.There has been an increasing interest in autonomous vehicles (AVs) in recent years. Through the use of advanced safety systems (ASS), it is expected that driverless AVs will result in a reduced number of road traffic accidents (RTAs) and fatalities on the roads. However, until the technology matures, collisions involving AVs will inevitably take place. Herein lies the hub of the problem: if AVs are to be programmed to deal with a collision scenario, which set of ethically acceptable rules should be applied? The two main philosophical doctrines are the utilitarian and deontological approaches of Bentham and Kant, with the two competing societal actions being altruistic and selfish as defined by Hamilton. It is shown in simulation, that the utilitarian approach is likely to be the most favourable candidate to succeed as a serious contender for developments in the programming and decision making for control of AV technologies in the future. At the heart of the proposed approach is the development of an ethical decision-maker (EDM), with this forming part of a model-to-decision (M2D) approach. Lumped parameter models (LPMs) are developed that capture the key features of AV collisions into an immovable rigid wall (IRW) or another AV, i.e. peak deformation and peak acceleration. The peak acceleration of the AV is then related to the accelerations experienced by the occupant(s) on-board the AV, e.g. peak head acceleration. Such information allows the M2D approach to decide on the collision target depending on the selected algorithm, e.g. utilitarian or altruistic. Alongside the EDM is an active collision system (ACS) which is able to change the AV structural stiffness properties. The ACS is able to compensate for situations when AVs are predicted to experience potentially severe and fatal injury severity levels

    High-Entropy Alloys for Advanced Nuclear Applications

    The expanded compositional freedom afforded by high-entropy alloys (HEAs) represents a unique opportunity for the design of alloys for advanced nuclear applications, in particular for applications where current engineering alloys fall short. This review assesses the work done to date in the field of HEAs for nuclear applications, provides critical insight into the conclusions drawn, and highlights possibilities and challenges for future study. It is found that our understanding of the irradiation responses of HEAs remains in its infancy, and much work is needed in order for our knowledge of any single HEA system to match our understanding of conventional alloys such as austenitic steels. A number of studies have suggested that HEAs possess ‘special’ irradiation damage resistance, although some of the proposed mechanisms, such as those based on sluggish diffusion and lattice distortion, remain somewhat unconvincing (certainly in terms of being universally applicable to all HEAs). Nevertheless, there may be some mechanisms and effects that are uniquely different in HEAs when compared to more conventional alloys, such as the effect that their poor thermal conductivities have on the displacement cascade. Furthermore, the opportunity to tune the compositions of HEAs over a large range to optimise particular irradiation responses could be very powerful, even if the design process remains challenging

    The Spectrum and Energy Levels of the Low-lying Configurations of Nd III

    Emission spectra of neodymium (Nd, Z=60) were recorded using Penning and hollow cathode discharge lamps in the region 11500-54000 cm−1^{-1} (8695-1852 \r{A}) by Fourier transform spectroscopy at resolving powers up to 106. Wavenumber measurements were accurate to a few 10−3^{-3} cm−1^{-1}. Grating spectroscopy of Nd vacuum sliding sparks and stellar spectra were used to aid line and energy level identification. The classification of 433 transitions of doubly-ionised neodymium (Nd III) from the Penning lamp spectra resulted in the determination of 144 energy levels of the 4f4^4, 4f3^35d, 4f3^36s, and 4f3^36p configurations of Nd III, 105 of which were experimentally established for the first time. Of the 40 previously published Nd III levels, 1 was revised and 39 were confirmed. New Nd III atomic structure calculations were made using the Cowan code parameterised by newly established levels. These results will not only benchmark and improve future semi-empirical atomic structure calculations of Nd III, but also enable more reliable astrophysical applications of Nd III, such as abundance analyses of kilonovae and chemically peculiar stars, and studies of pulsational wave propagation in these stars

    An assessment of the lattice strain in the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

    The formation of single phase solid solutions from combinations of multiple principal elements, with differing atomic radii, has led to the suggestion that the lattices of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) must be severely distorted. To assess this hypothesis, total scattering measurements using neutron radiation have been performed on the CrMnFeCoNi alloy and compared with similar data from five compositionally simpler materials within the same system. The Bragg diffraction patterns from all of the studied materials were similar, consistent with a face-centered cubic structure, and none showed the pronounced dampening that would be expected from a highly distorted lattice. A more detailed evaluation of the local lattice strain was made by considering the first six coordination shells in the pair distribution functions (PDF), obtained from the total scattering data. Across this range, the HEA exhibited the broadest PDF peaks but these widths were not disproportionately larger than those of the simpler alloys. In addition, of all the materials considered, the HEA was at the highest homologous temperature, and hence the thermal vibrations of the atoms would be greatest. Consequently, the level of local lattice strain required to rationalise a given PDF peak width would be reduced. As a result, the data presented in this study do not indicate that the local lattice strain in the equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi HEA is anomalously large.The authors would like to thank the EPSRC/Rolls-Royce Strategic Partnership for funding (EP/M005607/1 and EP/H022309).This is the final version of the article.     A novel assay for monitoring internalization of nanocarrier coupled antibodies

    BACKGROUND: Discovery of tumor-selective antibodies or antibody fragments is a promising approach for delivering therapeutic agents to antigen over-expressing cancers. Therefore it is important to develop methods for the identification of target- and function specific antibodies for effective drug delivery. Here we describe a highly selective and sensitive method for characterizing the internalizing potential of multivalently displayed antibodies or ligands conjugated to liposomes into tumor cells. The assay requires minute amounts of histidine-tagged ligand and relies on the non-covalent coupling of these antibodies to fluorescent liposomes containing a metal ion-chelating lipid. Following incubation of cells with antibody-conjugated liposomes, surface bound liposomes are gently removed and the remaining internalized liposomes are quantitated based on fluorescence in a high throughput manner. We have termed this methodology "Chelated Ligand Internalization Assay", or CLIA. RESULTS: The specificity of the assay was demonstrated with different antibodies to the ErbB-2 and EGF receptors. Antibody-uptake correlated with receptor expression levels in tumor cell lines with a range of receptor expression. Furthermore, Ni-NTA liposomes containing doxorubicin were used to screen for the ability of antibodies to confer target-specific cytotoxicity. Using an anti-ErbB2 single chain Fv (scFv) (F5) antibody, cytotoxicity could be conferred to ErbB2-overexpressing cells; however, a poly(ethylene glycol)-linked lipid (DSPE-PEG-NTA-Ni) was necessary to allow for efficient loading of the drug and to reduce nonspecific drug leakage during the course of the assay. CONCLUSION: The CLIA method we describe here represents a rapid, sensitive and robust assay for the identification and characterization of tumor-specific antibodies capable of high drug-delivery efficiency when conjugated to liposomal nanocarriers

    The microstructure and hardness of Ni-Co-Al-Ti-Cr quinary alloys

    The effects of Ni:Co and Al:Ti ratios on the room temperature microstructure, hardness and lattice parameter of twenty-seven quinary Ni-Co-Al-Ti-Cr alloys have been evaluated. All of the alloys exhibited a uniform γ\gamma-γ′\gamma ^\prime microstructure. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the liquidus and solidus temperatures of the alloys increased with greater Al:Ti ratios, decreased with Cr concentration and remained largely unchanged with respect to the Ni:Co ratio. Neutron diffraction measurements of the γ\gamma and γ′\gamma ^\prime lattice parameters revealed that the lattice misfit in all of the alloys was positive and increased with Ti concentration (i.e. lower Al:Ti ratio) regardless of the concentration of Cr, or the ratio of Ni:Co. Importantly, alloys with a Ni:Co ratio of 1:1, were found to have consistently greater lattice misfits than alloys with Ni:Co ratios of either 1:3 or 3:1. The measured lattice misfits were found to be strongly correlated with the Vickers hardness of the alloys, suggesting that lattice misfit plays a key role in the strengthening of γ\gamma-γ′\gamma ^\prime alloys of this type.Rolls-Royce/EPSRC Strategic Partnership (Grant IDs: EP/H022309/1, EP/H500375/1 and EP/ M005607/1)This is the author accepted manuscript.
