    Quantum plasmonic waveguides: Au nanowires

    Combining miniaturization and good operating speed is a compelling yet crucial task for our society. Plasmonic waveguides enable the possibility of carrying information at optical operating speed while maintaining the dimension of the device in the nanometer range. Here we present a theoretical study of plasmonic waveguides extending our investigation to structures so small that Quantum Size Effects (QSE) become non negligible, namely quantum plasmonic waveguides.     Simulations of the Light Scattering Properties of Metal/Oxide Core/Shell Nanospheres

    Given the importance of the optical properties of metal/dielectric core/shell nanoparticles, in this work we focus our attention on the light scattering properties, within the Mie framework, of some specific categories of these noteworthy nanostructures. In particular, we report theoretical results of angle-dependent light scattering intensity and scattering efficiency for Ag/Ag2O, Al/Al2O2, Cu/Cu2O, Pd/PdO, and Ti/TiO2 core/shell nanoparticles as a function of the core radius/shell thickness ratio and on a relative comparison. The results highlight the light scattering characteristics of these systems as a function of the radius/shell thickness ratio, helping in the choice of the more suitable materials and sizes for specific applications (i.e., dynamic light scattering for biological and molecular recognition, increasing light trapping in thin-film silicon, organic solar cells for achieving a higher photocurrent)

    Importance of plants with extremely small populations (Psesps) in endemic-rich areas, elements often forgotten in conservation strategies

    The distribution of the threatened fern Ophioglossum vulgatum L., a plant with extremely small populations (PSESPs) in Sardinia, is characterized by small disjunct populations with only a few individuals, and little is known about its status in the wild. To provide information for the conservation of O. vulgatum and with the aim to develop an in situ conservation strategy, we investigated its distribution, population size, and habitat. Field surveys confirmed that the species grows in only five localities. Two representative populations were selected for this study (Funtanamela and Gedili), and in each population, all plants were mapped and monitored monthly from April to August over an 8-year period. During the study, the populations had a very low number of reproductive plants and the populations appeared to be in decline, with the total number of plants per population slightly decreased in Gedili while a sharp reduction was recorded in Funtanamela due to wild boar threat. A fence was built in order to protect the site from further damage, but no noticeable signals of recovery were observed. The most urgent conservation requirement for this species is to preserve the threatened habitat of the remnant populations. Further field surveys and research are also required for an improved understanding of the species’ status

    Modeling vacancies and hydrogen impurities in graphene: A molecular point of view

    We have followed a "molecular" approach to study impurity effects in graphene. This is thought as the limiting case of an infinitely large cluster of benzene rings. Therefore, we study several carbon clusters, with increasing size, from phenalene, including three benzene rings, up to coronene 61, with 61 benzene rings. The impurities considered were a chemisorbed H atom, a vacancy, and a substitutional proton. We performed HF and UHF calculations using the STO-3G basis set. With increasing cluster size in the absence of impurities, we find a decreasing energy gap, here defined as the HOMO-LUMO difference. In the case of H chemisorption or a vacancy, the gap does not decrease appreciably, whereas it is substantially reduced in the case of a substitutional proton. The presence of an impurity invariably induces an increase of the density of states near the HOMO level. We find a zero mode only in the case of a substitutional proton. In agreement with experiments, we find that both the chemisorbed H, the substitutional proton, and the C atom near a vacancy acquire a magnetic moment. The relevance of graphene clusters for the design of novel electronic devices is also discussed.Comment: to appear in Phys. Lett.

    The plants, rituals and spells that 'cured' helminthiasis in Sicily

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The author reports on the plants, rituals and spells used against worms and the so-called <it>scantu </it>(fright) in some areas of Sicily. The work is based on ethnobotanical research carried out, prevalently, between 2002-2006, in some areas of Eastern, South-Eastern, North-Central and South-Central Sicily.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This research is based on dialogue. Senior 'healers' were contacted; furthermore, doctors, teachers, farmers and in general 'experts' with herbs and 'magic' rituals. Information was collected about the way the plants of folk medicine are prepared. The interviewees were also invited to recite prayers and spells against helminthiasis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The author has highlighted the importance of how, in some parts of Sicily, some ailments like helminthiasis and other correlated pathologies like <it>scantu </it>are 'treated' and, especially within the rural social classes, by folk medicine remedies, herbal practises, particular prayers, rituals and spells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>As regards health/illness, it should be noted that in the last ten years conventional medicine has provided very satisfactory results even resolving potentially mortal pathologies. However, in certain social classes, there is no real collaboration between conventional and folk medicine; so for some senior citizens, the 'healer' with his rituals and empirical and magical herbs is still the person to turn to for the 'cure' of particular ailments. Interest in these practises from ancestral heritage in an advanced country like Italy, is only relevant if the aim is to recoup a cultural identity which is already in decline.</p> <p>It is significant to report a piece: on 14 October 2007 the news on a well-known national Italian TV channel reported an interview with a 94 year-old man from Arbatax (Sardinia) referred to as a 'healer' because both his townspeople and others from all over the world go to him for his cures. He is not paid except in kind and has been known to cure St. Anthony's fire, burns, scalding and marine fungal infections, by smearing his saliva over the infected part and reciting 'special words'.</p

    The present thesis is made by five chapters. Each of them is focused on a specific aspect of job satisfaction. The first two chapters undelin the main results from the literature review on this theme. The second chapter analyzes the outcomes of job satisfaction and its determinants. The third chapter is more theoretical and methodological, and regards the measurement of job satisfaction concept using structural equation modelling techniques. The fourth chapter looks at how men and women live differently their jobs in terms of job satisfaction. The fifth and last chapter considers job satisfaction not as dependent variables but as indicator of job quality: the aim is to understand to what extent job satisfaction can be a proxy of the quality of a job

    This paper refers the debate on the occupational change, based on the contraposition between the theories of upgrading and polarization of the labor market, to Italy. The Italian labor market is characterized by some peculiar features that make it an interesting (and underrated) case study. Hence, the goal is analysing the employment change trajectories in Italy from 1992 to 2015, taking into particular account gender and territorial area of the worker (two dimensions of internal inequalities). Furthermore, I distinguish a pre-crisis from a post-crisis period, so to pick the effects of the Great Recession on the dynamics under analysis. In order to consider the multidimensionality of the concept of job quality I adopt a «multi-indicator» approach, defining the quality of each job by means of five different indicators. Results show that the economic crisis has interrupted the process of occupational upgrading, fostering the occupation also in unqualified sectors of the demand and shaping the labor market into the «hourglass» structure theorized by the polarization trend. The analysis, dissect-ed by gender and territorial area, allows further reflections about the drivers of the occupational change in the temporal span under analysis
