Criticality of the "critical state" of granular media: Dilatancy angle in the tetris model

The dilatancy angle describes the propensity of a granular medium to dilate under an applied shear. Using a simple spin model (the ``tetris'' model) which accounts for geometrical ``frustration'' effects, we study such a dilatancy angle as a function of density. An exact mapping can be drawn with a directed percolation process which proves that there exists a critical density ρc\rho_c above which the system expands and below which it contracts under shear. When applied to packings constructed by a random deposition under gravity, the dilatancy angle is shown to be strongly anisotropic, and it constitutes an efficient tool to characterize the texture of the medium.Comment: 7 pages RevTex, 8eps figure, to appear in Phys. GRBs with optical afterglow and known redshift: a statistical study

We present a correlation between two intrinsic parameters of GRB optical afterglows. These are the isotropic luminosity at the maximum of the light curve (Lpeak) and the time-integrated isotropic energy (Eiso) radiated after the observed maximum. We test the correlation between the logarithms of (Eiso) and (Lpeak) and finally we value the effect of the different samples of GRBs in according with the first optical observation reduced to proper time.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the conference "SWIFT and GRBs: Unveiling the Relativistic Universe", Venice, June 5-9, 200

The molecular chaperone Hsp90 is a component of the cap-binding complex and interacts with the translational repressor Cup during Drosophila oogenesis

In metazoa, the spatio-temporal translation of diverse mRNAs is essential to guarantee proper oocyte maturation and early embryogenesis. The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), which binds the 5â€Č cap structure of eukaryotic mRNAs, associates with either stimulatory or inhibitory factors to modulate protein synthesis. In order to identify novel factors that might act at the translational level during Drosophila oogenesis, we have undertaken a functional proteomic approach and isolated the product of the Hsp83 gene, the evolutionarily conserved chaperone Hsp90, as a specific component of the cap-binding complex. Here we report that Hsp90 interacts in vitro with the translational repressor Cup. In addition, we show that Hsp83 and cup interact genetically, since lowering Hsp90 activity enhances the oogenesis alterations linked to diverse cup mutant alleles. Hsp90 and Cup co-localize in the cytoplasm of the developing germ-line cells within the germarium, thus suggesting a common function from the earliest stages of oogenesis. Taken together, our data start elucidating the role of Hsp90 during Drosophila female germ-line development and strengthen the idea that Cup has multiple essential functions during egg chamber development

PG 1613+426: a new sdB pulsator

We report the detection of short period oscillations in the hot subdwarf B (sdB) star PG 1613+426 from time-series photometry carried out with the 91-cm Cassegrain telescope of the Catania Astrophysical Observatory. This star, which is brighter than the average of the presently known sdB pulsators, with B = 14.14 mag, has Teff=34400KT_{\rm eff}=34 400 {\rm K} and log⁥g=5.97\log g = 5.97, its position is near the hot end of the sdB instability strip, and it is a pulsator with a well observed peak in the power spectrum at 144.18±0.06s144.18\pm 0.06 \rm s. This star seems to be well suited for high precision measurements, which could detect a possible multi-mode pulsation behaviourComment: 3 pages, 4 figures. to appear on A&

    Comunicaci\uf3n sim\ue9trica y asim\ue9trica en los blogs de divulgaci\uf3n jur\ueddica: entre modalidad epist\ue9mica y modalidad de\uf3ntica

This paper aims at investigating some discursive features of blawgs, namely legal blogs in which legal experts disseminate and popularise their expertise. More specifically, it involves a corpus-assisted discourse study of the ways in which situational contexts affect the practices and strategies used to represent, construct and communicate legal knowledge. A comparison is drawn between two corpora representative of two different types of communication: a selection of posts written by legal experts for other experts (symmetrical communication) and posts written by legal experts for laypersons (asymmetrical communication). Combining qualitative and quantitative observations, the analysis shows that, in symmetrical communication, the emphasis is on the blogger\u2019s subjective interpretation of legal texts and on his role as knowledge disseminator, as indicated by the predominance of epistemic modality. In asymmetrical communication, on the other hand, the prevalence of deontic modality shifts the focus on to the reader as addressee of the advice, instructions and information provided by the legal expert

    La construcci\uf3n del espacio tur\uedstico a trav\ue9s de la fraseolog\ueda metaf\uf3rica

This article explores the metaphorical strategies conveyed by phraseological units in a subsection of the Linguaturismo corpus (Calvi 2011). Through a quali-quantative analysis, metaphorical phraseological units related to space were identified and classified, with a view to identifying the persuasive strategies necessary to create the image of the tourist destination in the reader/traveler's mind. The analysis followed a three-step methodology: a) semi-automatic elaboration of a list of potentially metaphorical N-grams; b) identification of phraseological patterns in the N-grams according to syntactic criteria (Corpas Pastor 1996); c) classification of metaphorical phraseological units based on the conceptual domain of space used as source domain, as target domain, and as both source and target domains (Lakoff/Johnson 1980). Results show that space metaphors in tourist texts rely on conventional linguistic patterns typical of general language. However, on a conceptual level, they display a functional specialisation as persuasive devices; by placing the readers/tourists at the centre of the communication, metaphors contribute to enhancing their sensorial perception, thus inviting them to visit a destination, buy a tourist service, or do a tourist experience

Distribution of Relaxation Times Based on Lasso Regression: A Tool for High-Resolution Analysis of IMPS Data in Photoelectrochemical Systems

    Get PDF
Intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) has been largely employed in semiconductor characterization for solar energy conversion devices to probe the operando behavior with widely available facilities. However, the implementation of IMPS data analysis to complex structures, whether based on the physical rate constant model (RCM) or the assumption-free distribution of relaxation times (DRT), is generally limited to a semi-quantitative description of the charge carrier kinetics of the system. In this study, a new algorithm for the analysis of IMPS data is developed, providing unprecedented time resolution to the investigation of Όs to s charge carrier dynamics in semiconductor-based systems used in photoelectrochemistry and photovoltaics. The algorithm, based on the previously developed DRT analysis, is herein modified with a Lasso regression method and available to the reader free of charge. A validation of this new algorithm is performed on a α-Fe2O3 photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, identified as a standard platform in the field, highlighting multiple potential-dependent charge transfer paths, otherwise hidden in the conventional IMPS data analysis

ASCA and BeppoSAX observations of the peculiar X-ray source 4U1700+24/HD154791

The X-ray source 4U1700+24/HD154791 is one of the few galactic sources whose counterpart is an evolved M star. In X-rays the source shows extreme erratic variability and a complex and variable spectrum. While this strongly suggests accretion onto a compact object, no clear diagnosis of binarity was done up to now. We report on ASCA and BeppoSAX X-ray broad band observations of this source and on ground optical observations from the Loiano 1.5 m telescope.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, uses aipproc.sty, to appear in Proceedings of the Fifth Compton Symposiu
