Resonance tube igniter
Reasonance induced in stoichiometric mixtures of gaseous hydrogen-oxygen produces temperatures /over 1100 deg F/ high enough to cause ignition. Resonance tube phenomenon occurs when high pressure gas is forced through sonic or supersonic nozzle into short cavity. Various applications for the phenomenon are discussed
Morphological Phase Diagram for Lipid Membrane Domains with Entropic Tension
Circular domains in phase-separated lipid vesicles with symmetric leaflet composition commonly exhibit three stable morphologies: flat, dimpled, and budded. However, stable dimples (i.e., partially budded domains) present a puzzle since simple elastic theories of domain shape predict that only flat and spherical budded domains are mechanically stable in the absence of spontaneous curvature. We argue that this inconsistency arises from the failure of the constant surface tension ensemble to properly account for the effect of entropic bending fluctuations. Formulating membrane elasticity within an entropic tension ensemble, wherein tension represents the free energy cost of extracting membrane area from thermal bending of the membrane, we calculate a morphological phase diagram that contains regions of mechanical stability for each of the flat, dimpled, and budded domain morphologies
Imaging the phase of an evolving Bose-Einstein condensate wavefunction
We demonstrate a spatially resolved autocorrelation measurement with a
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and measure the evolution of the spatial profile
of its quantum mechanical phase. Upon release of the BEC from the magnetic
trap, its phase develops a form that we measure to be quadratic in the spatial
coordinate. Our experiments also reveal the effects of the repulsive
interaction between two overlapping BEC wavepackets and we measure the small
momentum they impart to each other
Slow Dynamics in Glasses
Minimalist theories of complex systems are broadly of two kinds: mean-field
and axiomatic. So far all theories of complex properties absent from simple
systems and intrinsic to glasses are axiomatic. Stretched Exponential
Relaxation (SER) is the prototypical complex temporal property of glasses,
discovered by Kohlrausch 150 years ago, and now observed almost universally in
microscopically homogeneous, complex non-equilibrium materials, including
luminescent electronic (Coulomb) glasses. Critical comparison of alternative
axiomatic theories with both numerical simulations and experiments strongly
favors dynamical trap models over static percolative or energy landscape
models.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement of valence-band offsets for Mg-based semiconductor compounds
We have used x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to measure the valence-band offsets for the lattice matched MgSe/Cd0.54Zn0.46Se and MgTe/Cd0.88Zn0.12Te heterojunctions grown by molecular beam epitaxy. By measuring core level to valence-band maxima and core level to core level binding energy separations, we obtain values of 0.56+/-0.07 eV and 0.43+/-0.11 eV for the valence-band offsets of MgSe/Cd0.54Zn0.46Se and MgTe/Cd0.88Zn0.12Te, respectively. Both of these values deviate from the common anion rule, as may be expected given the unoccupied cation d orbitals in Mg. Application of our results to the design of current II-VI wide band-gap light emitters is discussed
n-CdSe/p-ZnTe based wide band-gap light emitters: Numerical simulation and design
The only IIâVI/IIâVI wide bandâgap heterojunction to provide both good lattice match and pâ and nâtype dopability is CdSe/ZnTe. We have carried out numerical simulations of several light emitter designs incorporating CdSe, ZnTe, and Mg alloys. In the simulations, Poissonâs equation is solved in conjunction with the hole and electron current and continuity equations. Radiative and nonradiative recombination in bulk material and at interfaces are included in the model. Simulation results show that an nâCdSe/pâZnTe heterostructure is unfavorable for efficient wide bandâgap light emission due to recombination in the CdSe and at the CdSe/ZnTe interface. An nâCdSe/Mg_(x)Cd_(1âx)Se/pâZnTe heterostructure significantly reduces interfacial recombination and facilitates electron injection into the pâZnTe layer. The addition of a Mg_(y)Zn_(1ây)Te electron confining layer further improves the efficiency of light emission. Finally, an nâCdSe/Mg_(x)Cd_(1âx)Se/Mg_(y)Zn_(1ây)Te/pâZnTe design allows tunability of the wavelength of light emission from green into the blue wavelength regime

Abundances of s-process elements in planetary nebulae: Br, Kr & Xe
We identify emission lines of post-iron peak elements in very high
signal-to-noise spectra of a sample of planetary nebulae. Analysis of lines
from ions of Kr and Xe reveals enhancements in most of the PNe, in agreement
with the theories of s-process in AGB star. Surprisingly, we did not detect
lines from Br even though s-process calculations indicate that it should be
produced with Kr at detectable levels.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, to be published in the Proceedings of the IAU

Sublattice addressing and spin-dependent motion of atoms in a double-well lattice
We load atoms into every site of an optical lattice and selectively spin flip
atoms in a sublattice consisting of every other site. These selected atoms are
separated from their unselected neighbors by less than an optical wavelength.
We also show spin-dependent transport, where atomic wave packets are coherently
separated into adjacent sites according to their internal state. These tools
should be useful for quantum information processing and quantum simulation of
lattice models with neutral atoms
DiFX2: A more flexible, efficient, robust and powerful software correlator
Software correlation, where a correlation algorithm written in a high-level
language such as C++ is run on commodity computer hardware, has become
increasingly attractive for small to medium sized and/or bandwidth constrained
radio interferometers. In particular, many long baseline arrays (which
typically have fewer than 20 elements and are restricted in observing bandwidth
by costly recording hardware and media) have utilized software correlators for
rapid, cost-effective correlator upgrades to allow compatibility with new,
wider bandwidth recording systems and improve correlator flexibility. The DiFX
correlator, made publicly available in 2007, has been a popular choice in such
upgrades and is now used for production correlation by a number of
observatories and research groups worldwide. Here we describe the evolution in
the capabilities of the DiFX correlator over the past three years, including a
number of new capabilities, substantial performance improvements, and a large
amount of supporting infrastructure to ease use of the code. New capabilities
include the ability to correlate a large number of phase centers in a single
correlation pass, the extraction of phase calibration tones, correlation of
disparate but overlapping sub-bands, the production of rapidly sampled
filterbank and kurtosis data at minimal cost, and many more. The latest version
of the code is at least 15% faster than the original, and in certain situations
many times this value. Finally, we also present detailed test results
validating the correctness of the new code.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
