    Towards zero solid waste: utilising tannery waste as a protein source for poultry feed

    Zero waste is now a strongly emerging issue for sustainable industrial development where minimisation and utilisation of waste are a priority in the leather industry. In a tannery hides and skins converted in to leather through various processes. Approximately 20% (w/w) of the chrome containing tannery solid waste (TSW) is generated from one tonne of raw hides and skins. However, tannery solid waste may also be a resource if it is managed expertly as we move towards zero waste. This research illustrates the potential of tannery solid waste as a poultry feed additive. An oxidation method was used to achieve 95% of dechroming rate of chrome tanned waste followed with thermal and enzymatic treatment to produce gelatin solution and collagen concentrates. The thermal stability and fibre structure of samples were analysed by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Protein content and fourteen amino acid concentrations were determined using amino acid analysis. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used to compare the amino acid composition with wheat and soya bean meal that is conventionally used in poultry feed. The nutrient requirements for poultry feed vary according to the purpose for which they have been developed. The high content of arginine, leucine, threonine, serine and methionine in the extract were of a sufficient level for poultry feed. Hexavalent chromium test was performed and showed that levels of the metal were low enough to be used in feed additives. In addition, the extracted product showed 75% digestibility (in vitro) and appears that treated TSW may be utilised in poultry feed, this demonstrates a clear example of waste utilisation. In Bangladesh plans are being formed to use the extract in poultry feed production

    Low temperature characterization of modulation doped SiGe grown on bonded silicon-on-insulator

    Modulation doped pseudomorphic Si0.87Ge0.13 strained quantum wells were grown on bonded silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates. Comparison with similar structures grown on bulk Si(100) wafers shows that the SOI material has higher mobility at low temperatures with a maximum value of 16 810 cm 2/V s for 2.05 × 1011 cm – 2 carries at 298 mK. Effective masses obtained from the temperature dependence of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations have a value of (0.27 ± 0.02) m0 compared to (0.23 ± 0.02) m0 for quantum wells on Si(100) while the cyclotron resonance effective masses obtained at higher magnetic fields without consideration for nonparabolicity effects have values between 0.25 and 0.29 m0. Ratios of the transport and quantum lifetimes, tau/tau q=2.13 ± 0.10, were obtained for the SOI material that are, we believe, the highest reported for any pseudomorphic SiGe modulation doped structure and demonstrates that there is less interface roughness or charge scattering in the SOI material than in metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistors or other pseudomorphic SiGe modulation doped quantum wells

    Improved Constraints on Isotropic Shift and Anisotropies of the Speed of Light using Rotating Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators

    We demonstrate that Michelson-Morley tests, which detect direction-dependent anisotropies in the speed of light, can also be used to place limits upon isotropic deviations of the vacuum speed of light from cc, as described by the photon sector Standard Model Extension (SME) parameter κ~tr\tilde{\kappa}_{tr}. A shift in the speed of light that is isotropic in one inertial frame implies anisotropic shifts in others. Using observer Lorentz covariance, we derive the time-dependent variations in the relative resonance frequencies of a pair of electromagnetic resonators that would be generated by such a shift in the rest frame of the Sun. A new analysis of a recent experimental test of relativity using this result constrains κ~tr\tilde{\kappa}_{tr} with a precision of 7.4×1097.4\times10^{-9}. This represents the first constraint on κ~tr\tilde{\kappa}_{tr} by a Michelson-Morley experiment and the first analysis of a single experiment to simultaneously set limits on all nine non-birefringent terms in the photon sector of the SME

    In England, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) allocated £5 million over three years from 2005 to 2008 to support the establishment of a wide range of innovative Resource Efficiency Clubs (RECs). During the funding period (2005 – 2008) the programme funded 70 RECs with 45 remaining active at the end of the three years (2008). Some 1,330 businesses were active in the 70 RECs with 1,014 providing data including potential and actual savings. In excess of £50 million of potential savings were identified and by the end of 2008 some £25 million were achieved. The total savings to total grant ratio for all RECs was, by 2008, some 5.8; this was in excess of the original ratio set by Defra. The Programme made clear to key decision makers that well designed RECs are a key policy instrument. The research showed that the future for RECs in England is uncertain and strategists should consider innovative ways to fund their continued contribution to national, regional and local practice

    Promoting environmental management in very small businesses through “Green Angels” in a local collaborative partnership: a case study from Brighton, England

    This paper describes the results of the East Brighton Employment and Environment Centre (EBEEC), a 15 month URBAN project, promoting environmental management to very small businesses in east Brighton, England. Some 31 volunteers, termed `Green Angels`, were trained in waste minimisation at the University of Brighton, and provided practical support to local firms through site reviews and research. The EBEEC project provided information and support to some 600 SMEs in east Brighton, via newsletters, email, telephone helpline, seminars and other projects. The Project was managed by a collaborative partnership formed from regional as well as local organisations. The involvement of a University to train potential `Green Angels`, so as to support SMEs in an area designated for economic regeneration, was an innovative and successful method of providing environmental management support to small firms. To stimulate the uptake of environmental management, case study material based on Best Practice was produced and disseminated to local companies via an Internet Site. A CD-Rom containing the Green Angel training package has been produced to help other projects like this. The outcomes from this Project will inform the regional and potentially the national approach to providing environmental business support and advice via local collaborative partnerships containing Universities

    Evaluation of 100G DP-QPSK long-haul transmission performance using second order co-pumped Raman laser based amplification

    We present, for the first time, a detailed investigation of the impact of second order co-propagating Raman pumping on long-haul 100G WDM DP-QPSK coherent transmission of up to 7082 km using Raman fibre laser based configurations. Signal power and noise distributions along the fibre for each pumping scheme were characterised both numerically and experimentally. Based on these pumping schemes, the Q factor penalties versus co-pump power ratios were experimentally measured and quantified. A significant Q factor penalty of up to 4.15 dB was observed after 1666 km using symmetric bidirectional pumping, compared with counter-pumping only. Our results show that whilst using co-pumping minimises the intra-cavity signal power variation and amplification noise, the Q factor penalty with co-pumping was too great for any advantage to be seen. The relative intensity noise (RIN) characteristics of the induced fibre laser and the output signal, and the intra-cavity RF spectra of the fibre laser are also presented. We attribute the Q factor degradation to RIN induced penalty due to RIN being transferred from the first order fibre laser and second order co-pump to the signal. More importantly, there were two different fibre lasing regimes contributing to the amplification. It was random distributed feedback lasing when using counter-pumping only and conventional Fabry-Perot cavity lasing when using all bidirectional pumping schemes. This also results in significantly different performances due to different laser cavity lengths for these two classes of laser
