    The NYU Survey Service: Promoting Value in Undergraduate Education

    New York University\u27s Data Service Studio has recently launched the NYU Survey Service, whose ultimate aim is to support the development and administration of surveys of all types. For the web-based component, we utilize a product called Qualtrics, which allows university affiliates to develop and administer web-based surveys. This article describes the process by which we at NYU came to offer the service during a time when concerns abound about the ability of libraries to support and expand services while still meeting service imperatives such as robust data services. While many considerations went into this evaluation and the ultimate conclusion to pilot the service, we emphasize those most related to data and information literacy, undergraduate instruction, learning and research, library collaborations and application administration and support

    CII* Absorption in Damped Lyman Alpha Systems: (II) A New Window on the Star Formation History of the Universe

    Starting from the SFR per unit physical area, determined for DLAs using the C II* method, we obtain the SFR per unit comoving volume at zz ≈\approx 3, and find that it agrees with that for the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Though the mass of produced stars indicated by the SFRs is consistent with the current densities of known stellar populations, the mass of metals produced by zz=2.5 is 30 times larger than detected in absorption in DLAs. The most likely solutions to this ``missing metals'' problem is that star formation occurs in compact bulge regions. We search for evidence of feedback and find no correlations between the SFR per unit area and N(H I), but possible correlations between SFR per unit area and low-ion velocity width and SFR per unit area and metal abundance. We show that (a) the correlation between cooling rate and dust-to-gas ratio is positive evidence for grain photoelectric heating, (b) the CMB does not significantly populate the C II excited fine-structure states, and (c) the ratio of CII* to resonance-line optical depths is a sensitive probe of the multi-phase structure of the DLA gas. We address recent arguments that DLAs are comprised only of WNM gas, and show them to be inconclusive. Despite the rough agreement between SFR per unit comoving volume for DLAs and LBGs, current evidence indicates these are distinct populations

    Partisanship Unmasked? The Role of Politics and Social Norms in COVID-19 Mask-Wearing Behavior

    Public health officials have faced resistance in their efforts to promote mask-wearing to counter the spread of COVID-19. One approach to promoting behavior change is to alert people to the fact that a behavior is common (a descriptive norm). However, partisan differences in pandemic mitigation behavior mean that Americans may be especially (in)sensitive to information about behavioral norms depending on the party affiliation of the group in question. In July–August 2020, we tested the effects of providing information to respondents about how many Americans, co-partisans, or out-partisans report wearing masks regularly on both mask-wearing intentions and on the perceived effectiveness of masks. Learning that a majority of Americans report wearing masks regularly increases mask-wearing intentions and perceived effectiveness, though the effects of this information are not distinguishable from other treatments

    Family of Hermitian Low-Momentum Nucleon Interactions with Phase Shift Equivalence

    Using a Schmidt orthogonalization transformation, a family of Hermitian low-momentum NN interactions is derived from the non-Hermitian Lee-Suzuki (LS) low-momentum NN interaction. As special cases, our transformation reproduces the Hermitian interactions for Okubo and Andreozzi. Aside from their common preservation of the deuteron binding energy, these Hermitian interactions are shown to be phase shift equivalent, all preserving the empirical phase shifts up to decimation scale Lambda. Employing a solvable matrix model, the Hermitian interactions given by different orthogonalization transformations are studied; the interactions can be very different from each other particularly when there is a strong intruder state influence. However, because the parent LS low-momentum NN interaction is only slightly non-Hermitian, the Hermitian low-momentum nucleon interactions given by our transformations, including the Okubo and Andreozzi ones, are all rather similar to each other.     Nudging down theft from insecure vehicles. A pilot study

    This report presents the preliminary findings of a pilot study to reduce thefts from cars committed against insecure vehicles, using the behavioural insights or ‘nudge approach’. The recipients of the ‘nudges’ were potential victims of theft from insecure vehicles living in high rate areas for this crime, where a bespoke leaflet campaign was developed to nudge vehicle owners into thinking more carefully when leaving their vehicles unattended, particularly when left on their driveways overnight. Although somewhat tentative at this stage, the preliminary findings indicate that the percentage of thefts committed against insecure vehicles in the two treatment areas was reduced significantly when compared with the two control group areas where no nudge interventions were introduced. This demonstrates that if appropriate nudges (grounded in psychological theory) are coupled with and delivered by appropriate messengers, the prosocial behavioural change can be encouraged which can lead to a reduction in criminal behaviour and opportunities for crim

    Cosmological Results from High-z Supernovae

    The High-z Supernova Search Team has discovered and observed 8 new supernovae in the redshift interval z=0.3-1.2. These independent observations, confirm the result of Riess et al. (1998a) and Perlmutter et al. (1999) that supernova luminosity distances imply an accelerating universe. More importantly, they extend the redshift range of consistently observed SN Ia to z~1, where the signature of cosmological effects has the opposite sign of some plausible systematic effects. Consequently, these measurements not only provide another quantitative confirmation of the importance of dark energy, but also constitute a powerful qualitative test for the cosmological origin of cosmic acceleration. We find a rate for SN Ia of 1.4+/-0.5E-04 h^3/Mpc^3/yr at a mean redshift of 0.5. We present distances and host extinctions for 230 SN Ia. These place the following constraints on cosmological quantities: if the equation of state parameter of the dark energy is w=-1, then H0 t0 = 0.96+/-0.04, and O_l - 1.4 O_m = 0.35+/-0.14. Including the constraint of a flat Universe, we find O_m = 0.28+/-0.05, independent of any large-scale structure measurements. Adopting a prior based on the 2dF redshift survey constraint on O_m and assuming a flat universe, we find that the equation of state parameter of the dark energy lies in the range -1.48-1, we obtain w<-0.73 at 95% confidence. These constraints are similar in precision and in value to recent results reported using the WMAP satellite, also in combination with the 2dF redshift survey.Comment: 50 pages, AAS LateX, 15 figures, 15 tables.     Med25 Limits Master Regulators That Govern Adipogenesis

    Mediator 25 (Med25) is a member of the mediator complex that relays signals from transcription factors to the RNA polymerase II machinery. Multiple transcription factors, particularly those involved in lipid metabolism, utilize the mediator complex, but how Med25 is involved in this context is unclear. We previously identified Med25 in a translatome screen of adult cardiomyocytes (CMs) in a novel cell type-specific model of LMNA cardiomyopathy. In this study, we show that Med25 upregulation is coincident with myocardial lipid accumulation. To ascertain the role of Med25 in lipid accumulation, we utilized iPSC-derived and neonatal CMs to recapitulate the in vivo phenotype by depleting lamins A and C (lamin A/C) in vitro. Although lamin A/C depletion elicits lipid accumulation, this effect appears to be mediated by divergent mechanisms dependent on the CM developmental state. To directly investigate Med25 in lipid accumulation, we induced adipogenesis in Med25-silenced 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and detected enhanced lipid accumulation. Assessment of pertinent mediators driving adipogenesis revealed that C/EBPα and PPARγ are super-induced by Med25 silencing. Our results indicate that Med25 limits adipogenic potential by suppressing the levels of master regulators that govern adipogenesis. Furthermore, we caution the use of early-developmental-stage cardiomyocytes to model adult-stage cells, particularly for dissecting metabolic perturbations emanating from LMNA mutations

    Imaging and Demography of the Host Galaxies of High-Redshift Type Ia Supernovae

    We present the results of a study of the host galaxies of high redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We provide a catalog of 18 hosts of SNe Ia observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by the High-z Supernova Search Team (HZT), including images, scale-lengths, measurements of integrated (Hubble equivalent) BVRIZ photometry in bands where the galaxies are brighter than m ~ 25 mag, and galactocentric distances of the supernovae. We compare the residuals of SN Ia distance measurements from cosmological fits to measurable properties of the supernova host galaxies that might be expected to correlate with variable properties of the progenitor population, such as host galaxy color and position of the supernova. We find mostly null results; the current data are generally consistent with no correlations of the distance residuals with host galaxy properties in the redshift range 0.42 < z < 1.06. Although a subsample of SN hosts shows a formally significant (3-sigma) correlation between apparent V-R host color and distance residuals, the correlation is not consistent with the null results from other host colors probed by our largest samples. There is also evidence for the same correlations between SN Ia properties and host type at low redshift and high redshift. These similarities support the current practice of extrapolating properties of the nearby population to high redshifts pending more robust detections of any correlations between distance residuals from cosmological fits and host properties.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A

    Hubble Space Telescope and Ground-Based Observations of Type Ia Supernovae at Redshift 0.5: Cosmological Implications

    We present observations of the Type Ia supernovae (SNe) 1999M, 1999N, 1999Q, 1999S, and 1999U, at redshift z~0.5. They were discovered in early 1999 with the 4.0~m Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory by the High-z Supernova Search Team (HZT) and subsequently followed with many ground-based telescopes. SNe 1999Q and 1999U were also observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. We computed luminosity distances to the new SNe using two methods, and added them to the high-z Hubble diagram that the HZT has been constructing since 1995. The new distance moduli confirm the results of previous work. At z~0.5, luminosity distances are larger than those expected for an empty universe, implying that a ``Cosmological Constant,'' or another form of ``dark energy,'' has been increasing the expansion rate of the Universe during the last few billion years.Comment: 68 pages, 22 figures.
