The Last Edwardsean: Edwards Amasa Park and the Rhetoric of Improved Calvinism
ABSTRACT
THE LAST EDWARDSEAN: EDWARDS AMASA PARK AND THE
RHETORIC OF IMPROVED CALVINISM
Edwards Amasa Park (1808-1900) of Andover championed Edwardsean Calvinism in the United States from the Jacksonian era until the very close of the nineteenth century by employing rhetorical strategies that lent his New England theology fresh apologetic usefulness. The thesis demonstrates that Park has been incorrectly identified as a Taylorite but, extending the argument of Joseph Conforti, ought to be viewed as re-casting his inherited Hopkinsian exercise scheme into a fresh historical synthesis influenced by contemporary patterns of thought. Park’s own training at Andover in the irenic divinity of Moses Stuart and Leonard Woods, his application as rhetorician of the work of Hugh Blair and George Campbell and his exposure in Germany to the Vermittlungstheologie of Friedrich Tholuck and Julius Müller gave specific definition to his own theological project. Additionally, the thesis argues that Park ought not to be viewed as a romantic idealist in the line of Horace Bushnell or as a proto-liberal in advance of the Andover liberals who succeeded him. Park retained a life-long commitment to a commingled epistemology and methodology derived from Lockean empiricism, Baconian induction, natural theology and Scottish common sense realism. As a formidable apologist for his revivalist inheritance identified with Jonathan Edwards and Samuel Hopkins, Edwards Amasa Park conserved the substance and prolonged the influence of his beloved New England theology by securing for it modes of expression well fitted to his nineteenth-century audience
Absence of Luttinger's Theorem due to Zeros in the Single-Particle Green Function
We show exactly with an SU(N) interacting model that even if the ambiguity
associated with the placement of the chemical potential, , for a T=0
gapped system is removed by using the unique value ,
Luttinger's sum rule is violated even if the ground-state degeneracy is lifted
by an infinitesimal hopping. The failure stems from the non-existence of the
Luttinger-Ward functional for a system in which the self-energy diverges. Since
it is the existence of the Luttinger-Ward functional that is the basis for
Luttinger's theorem which relates the charge density to sign changes of the
single-particle Green function, no such theorem exists. Experimental data on
the cuprates are presented which show a systematic deviation from the Luttinger
count, implying a breakdown of the electron quasiparticle picture in strongly
correlated electron matter.Comment: Published version with supplemental material rebutting the recent
criticism that our theorem fails if the ground-state degeneracy is lifte
William Arbuthnot Lane (1856-1943): Surgical Innovator and His Theory of Autointoxication.
William Arbuthnot Lane contributed to the advancement of many fields of orthopedics, otolaryngology, and general surgery. He is credited for his no-touch technique and the invention of long-handled instruments, some of which are still in use today, to minimize tissue handling. He is most well known for his hypothesis that slowing of gastric contents could cause a variety of ailments and this became known as Lane\u27s disease. Although his surgical treatment of Lane\u27s disease is now defunct, it advanced the surgical technique in colorectal surgery. It seems likely that some of Lane\u27s autointoxication patients would be classified today as patients with colonic inertia, diverticulitis, colonic volvulus, and megacolon or, which are all treated with colectomy. Lane was a pioneer in multiple fields and a true general surgeon. He advanced colorectal surgery immensely and propelled the field of surgery into a new era
Imaging the phase of an evolving Bose-Einstein condensate wavefunction
We demonstrate a spatially resolved autocorrelation measurement with a
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and measure the evolution of the spatial profile
of its quantum mechanical phase. Upon release of the BEC from the magnetic
trap, its phase develops a form that we measure to be quadratic in the spatial
coordinate. Our experiments also reveal the effects of the repulsive
interaction between two overlapping BEC wavepackets and we measure the small
momentum they impart to each other
Gravitational wave detectors based on matter wave interferometers (MIGO) are no better than laser interferometers (LIGO)
We show that a recent claim that matter wave interferometers have a much
higher sensitivity than laser interferometers for a comparable physical setup
is unfounded. We point out where the mistake in the earlier analysis is made.
We also disprove the claim that only a description based on the geodesic
deviation equation can produce the correct physical result. The equations for
the quantum dynamics of non-relativistic massive particles in a linearly
perturbed spacetime derived here are useful for treating a wider class of
related physical problems. A general discussion on the use of atom
interferometers for the detection of gravitational waves is also provided.Comment: 16 pages, REVTeX4; minor changes, one figure and a few references

Phase fluctuations in anisotropic Bose condensates: from cigars to rings
We study the phase-fluctuating condensate regime of ultra-cold atoms trapped
in a ring-shaped trap geometry, which has been realized in recent experiments.
We first consider a simplified box geometry, in which we identify the
conditions to create a state that is dominated by thermal phase-fluctuations,
and then explore the experimental ring geometry. In both cases we demonstrate
that the requirement for strong phase fluctuations can be expressed in terms of
the total number of atoms and the geometric length scales of the trap only. For
the ring-shaped trap we discuss the zero temperature limit in which a
condensate is realized where the phase is fluctuating due to interactions and
quantum fluctuations. We also address possible ways of detecting the phase
fluctuating regime in ring condensates.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, minor edit

Deep roots and soil structure
In this opinion article we examine the relationship between penetrometer resistance and soil depth in the field. Assuming that root growth is inhibited at penetrometer resistances > 2.5 MPa, we conclude that in most circumstances the increases in penetrometer resistance with depth are sufficiently great to confine most deep roots to elongating in existing structural pores. We suggest that deep rooting is more likely related to the interaction between root architecture and soil structure than it is to the ability of a root to deform strong soil. Although the ability of roots to deform strong soil is an important trait, we propose it is more closely related to root exploration of surface layers than deep rooting
