    Development and applications of optical interferometric micrometrology in the angstrom and subangstrom range

    The recent development of the scanning electron tunneling microscope and the atomic force microscope requires absolute standards for measurements in the angstrom and subangstrom range. Optical interferometry with lasers and multiple mode laser resonances can provide absolute measurements as the laser wavelengths are very accurately known. A key feature of such measurements is the use of piezoelectric crystals as translators of the highest accuracy for very small disturbances. However, the dimensional changes of these crystals resulting from electrical potential changes depend on many variables, among them the method of mounting, so that accurate calibrations are necessary. Starting from advances in optical metrology made by physicists trying to find gravity waves, advances which led to measurements down to 10 to the -5 A, the author designed and built a much simpler system for the angstrom range. The major limiting factors were mechanical vibrations, air currents, thermal changes and laser instabilities

    The Advanced Solid-state Array Spectrometer (ASAS) is a pointable imaging spectrometer which uses a solid-state array to acquire imagery of terrestrial targets in 29 spectral bands from .4 to .8 microns. Performance and calibration of the instrument are described. The ASAS data sets obtained in 1990 provide a unique look at forest canopies from two different forest regions of the North America continent under varying temporal, spectral, and bidirectional conditions. These data sets will be used to study such parameters as the albedo of forest canopies, the dynamics of scene radiation due to factors such as canopy architecture, moisture stress, leaf chemistry, topography, and understory composition

    Using P-band Signals of Opportunity Radio Waves for Root Zone Soil Moisture Remote Sensing

    Retrieval of Root Zone Soil Moisture (RZSM) is important for understanding the carbon cycle for use in climate change research as well as meteorology, hydrology, and precision agriculture studies. A current method of remote sensing, GNSS-R uses GPS signals to measure soil moisture content and vegetation biomass, but it is limited to 3-5 cm of soil penetration depth. Signals of Opportunity (SoOp) has emerged as an extension of GNSS-R remote sensing using communication signals. P-band communication signals (370 MHz) will be studied as an improved method of remote sensing of RZSM. P-band offers numerous advantages over GNSS-R, including stronger signal strength and deeper soil penetration. A SoOp instrument was installed on a mobile antenna tower in a farm field at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. An additional half-wave dipole antenna, as well as corresponding modifications to the experiment’s front-end box, was included to capture horizontally-polarized reflected P-band signals throughout a corn growth season. By measuring the reflected signal power off the soil over time, soil moisture and above-ground biomass can be measured. Soil moisture and vegetation biomass change the soil’s dielectric reflection coefficient and thus affect its reflectivity properties. It is expected that there will be strong correlation between reflected signal strength and soil moisture. Data will be compared against soil moisture measurements from in-situ soil sensors. The data obtained will be used to verify existing analytical soil moisture and above-ground biomass models. In addition, these results will be used to build an airborne and/or space-based remote sensing instrument

    Topical anti-inflammatory activity of Polygonum cuspidatum extract in the TPA model of mouse ear inflammation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study tested the ability of a characterized extract of <it>Polygonum cuspidatum </it>(PCE) to inhibit mouse ear inflammation in response to topical application of 12-<it>O-</it>tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A 50% (wt:vol) ethanolic solution of commercial 200:1 PCE was applied to both ears of female Swiss mice (n = 8) at 0.075, 0.15, 0.3, 1.25 and 2.5 mg/ear 30 min after TPA administration (2 μg/ear). For comparison, 3 other groups were treated with TPA and either 1) the vehicle (50% ethanol) alone, 2) indomethacin (0.5 mg/ear), or 3) <it>trans</it>-resveratrol (0.62 mg/ear). Ear thickness was measured before TPA and at 4 and 24 h post-TPA administration to assess ear edema. Ear punch biopsies were collected at 24 h and weighed as a second index of edema. Myeloperoxidase activity was measured in each ear punch biopsy to assess neutrophil infiltration.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>PCE treatment at all doses significantly reduced ear edema compared to the TPA control. The PCE response was dose-dependent and 2.5 mg PCE significantly inhibited all markers of inflammation to a greater extent than indomethacin (0.5 mg). MPO activity was inhibited at PCE doses ≥ 1.25 mg/ear. <it>Trans-</it>resveratrol inhibited inflammation at comparable doses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PCE inhibits development of edema and neutrophil infiltration in the TPA-treated mouse ear model of topical inflammation.</p

    Time and Out-of-Pocket Costs Associated with Respiratory Syncytial Virus Hospitalization of Infants

    AbstractObjectiveThe objective of this study was to quantify time spent plus out-of-pocket costs associated with confirmed respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalization of infants not prophylaxed against RSV.MethodsA prospective survey was carried out at multiple tertiary care hospitals in the United States.PatientsThe patients consisted of a consecutive sample of infants <12 months, born between 33 and 35 weeks of gestation. One site also enrolled full-term infants hospitalized with confirmed RSV. Daily patient census identified eligible patients. Consenting caregivers of eligible subjects (n=84, 1 refusal) were interviewed on discharge day and by telephone ∼30 days following discharge regarding time and out-of-pocket costs due to RSV.ResultsTotal average out of pocket expenses were 643.69(range643.69 (range 21–16,867;SD16,867; SD 2,403) for premature and 214.42(range214.42 (range 6–827;SD827; SD 218) (P=.0158) for full-term subjects. Total average economic burden per admission was 4517.07forprematureand4517.07 for premature and 2135.30 for full-term infants, including the value of lost productivity but excluding inpatient hospital and physician bills and lost income. Premature infants (n=48) had longer hospital stays (mean 6.9 days; SD 7.5 vs. 3.4 days; SD 2.6 days) (P=.001) with an associated mean total time spent by up to 5 adults of 281.7 hours (range 25–2819.7 hours; SD 465.8 hours) versus a mean of 139.7 hours (range 31.8–561.3 hours; SD 118.1 hours) for term infants (P=.109). Time and out-of-pocket costs continued after discharge.ConclusionsRSV hospitalization of infants is associated with substantial, previously unmeasured time and monetary losses. These losses continued following discharge. The economic burden on families and society appears heavier for infants born at 33 to 35 weeks of gestation than for full-term infants

    MRI: Acquisition of a High Performance Cluster for the University of Maine Scientific Grid Portal

    This project, acquiring a cluster to establish a scientific grid portal in Maine, aims to enable projects requiring large datasets. The work makes available to the wider community results such as widely-used whole-ice sheet models, tools for climate change research, prototype versions of object-based caching system (bundled with MPI-IO implementation developed at Argonne National Lab), the data management system, real-time animations, videos, etc. Additionally, the portal provides the larger community the compute power, storage capacity, and rendering engine to execute very high-resolution models, and receive animations and other visualized information in real time.Broader Impact: The infrastructure enhances understanding of global issues and contributes in the development of educational tools for K-12 students. The scientific grid portal contributes in the dissemination of important scientific discoveries. The portal also provides a show-case for research being performed in the state
