    Singular surfaces and cusps in symmetric planar 3-RPR manipulators

    International audienceWe study in this paper a class of 3-RPR manipulators for which the direct kinematic problem (DKP) is split into a cubic problem followed by a quadratic one. These manipulators are geometrically characterized by the fact that the moving triangle is the image of the base triangle by an indirect isometry. We introduce a specific coordinate system adapted to this geometric feature and which is also well adapted to the splitting of the DKP. This allows us to obtain easily precise descriptions of the singularities and of the cusp edges. These latter second order singularities are important for nonsingular assembly mode changing. We show how to sort assembly modes and use this sorting for motion planning in the joint space

    Photosynthetic traits of freshwater lichens are consistent with the submersion conditions of their habitat

    In this study, we compared the photosynthetic performance of epilithic freshwater lichens on siliceous stream rock submerged for: more than 9 (hyper-), 6–9 (meso-) or 3–6 months (sub-hydrophilic lichens). In the dry state, neither variable fluorescence nor respiration activity could be detected. In the wet state, rates of dark respiration (O2 uptake and CO2 production for immerged and in-air samples) were in the lower range of that reported for non-aquatic lichens. With 200 (under water) or 500 mmol.mx2.sx1 photosyntheticallly active photon flux density (PPFD) (aerial), photosynthesis was positive but rates were lower than that published for non-aquatic species. Under intense PPFD (2000 mmol.mx2.sx1, aerial), photo- synthesis increased in sub- but became negative in hyper-hydrophilic species. After hydration, dry samples increased photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, which reached near steady state in <6–7 min. Hyper-hydrophilic lichen took longer than sub-hydrophilic species. A long period of desiccation (4 months) had a negative effect on subsequent PSII photochemistry of hyper- but not of sub-hydrophilic hydrated lichens. When thalli were allowed to dehydrate, all types of lichens lost PSII activity after about 15–20 min. Deactivation was faster in the hyper- than in the sub-hydrophilic species. The metabolic traits presented here are thus consistent with the ecological amplitude of the freshwater lichens studied

    Synthesis of optimal electrical stimulation patterns for functional motion restoration: applied to spinal cord-injured patients

    We investigated the synthesis of electrical stimulation patterns for functional movement restoration in human paralyzed limbs. We considered the knee joint system, co-activated by the stimulated quadriceps and hamstring muscles. This synthesis is based on optimized functional electrical stimulation (FES) patterns to minimize muscular energy consumption and movement efficiency criteria. This two-part work includes a multi-scale physiological muscle model, based on Huxley’s formulation. In the simulation, three synthesis strategies were investigated and compared in terms of muscular energy consumption and co-contraction levels. In the experimental validation, the synthesized FES patterns were carried out on the quadriceps-knee joint system of four complete spinal cord injured subjects. Surface stimulation was applied to all subjects, except for one FES-implanted subject who received neural stimulation. In each experimental validation, the model was adapted to the subject through a parameter identification procedure. Simulation results were successful and showed high co-contraction levels when reference trajectories were tracked. Experimental validation results were encouraging, as the desired and measured trajectories showed good agreement, with an 8.4 % rms error in a subject without substantial time-varying behavior. We updated the maximal isometric force in the model to account for time-varying behavior, which improved the average rms errors from 31.4 to 13.9 % for all subjects

    A tool to guide the selection of impact categories for LCA studies by using the representativeness index

    Understanding the environmental profile of a product computed from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework is sometimes challenging due to the high number of environmental indicators involved. The objective here, in guiding interpretation of LCA results, is to highlight the importance of each impact category for each product alternative studied. For a given product, the proposed methodology identifies the impact categories that are worth focusing on, relatively to a whole set of products from the same cumulated database. The approach extends the analysis of Representativeness Indices (RI) developed by Esnouf et al. (2018). It proposes a new operational tool for calculating RIs at the level of impact categories for a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) result. Impact categories and LCI results are defined as vectors within a standardized vector space and a procedure is proposed to treat issues coming from the correlation of impact category vectors belonging to the same Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) method. From the cumulated ecoinvent database, LCI results of the Chinese and the German electricity mixes illustrate the method. Relevant impact categories of the EU-standardized ILCD method are then identified. RI results from all products of a cumulated LCI database were therefore analysed to assess the main tendencies of the impact categories of the ILCD method. This operational approach can then significantly contribute to the interpretation of the LCA results by pointing to the specificities of the inventories analysed and for identifying the main representative impact categories

    Characterization of the activation of yttrium-based getter films by electrical measurements and ion-beam analyses

    International audienceGettering properties of thin films of pure yttrium and yttrium-based alloys have been studied for application to MEMS vacuum packaging at the wafer level. Thin films of Y, Zr-Y, Ti-Y and V-Y were co-evaporated under ultra-high vacuum. It is demonstrated that the sheet resistance measured by 4-probes technique before and after activation at 250°C gives a good estimation of the oxygen sorption ability determined by NRA. Pure yttrium has been found to be highly reactive after deposition (sheet resistance increases by 40% after 1 month in air) but poorly efficient in oxygen trapping after activation. Conversely, the sorption ability of Y-V, Y-Zr and Y-Ti alloys is extremely high and increases with the yttrium content in the film. The bests results for sorption are obtained with Y-V (2.7 10 22 atom/cm 3 for Y44V56)

    In a remarkable variety of contexts appears the modular data associated to finite groups. And yet, compared to the well-understood affine algebra modular data, the general properties of this finite group modular data has been poorly explored. In this paper we undergo such a study. We identify some senses in which the finite group data is similar to, and different from, the affine data.
