    Early Wound Healing Score: a system to evaluate the early healing of periodontal soft tissue wounds

    Purpose: Numerous indices have been proposed to analyse wound healing in oral soft tissues, but each has specific shortcomings. A new method of analysis, the Early Wound Healing Score (EHS), was evaluated in the present study. The aim was to assess more accurately early healing by primary intention of surgical incisions in periodontal soft tissues. Methods: Twenty-one patients were treated with different surgical procedures comprising 1 or 2 vertical releasing incisions as part of a surgical access flap. Twenty-four hours after surgery, early wound healing at the vertical releasing incisions was assessed using the EHS. This score assessed clinical signs of re-epithelialization (CSR), clinical signs of haemostasis (CSH), and clinical signs of inflammation (CSI). Since complete wound epithelialization was the main outcome, the CSR score was weighted to be 60% of the total final score. Accordingly, a score of 0, 3, or 6 points was possible for the assessment of CSR, whereas scores of 0, 1, or 2 points were possible for CSH and CSI. Higher values indicated better healing. Accordingly, the score for ideal early wound healing was 10. Results: Thirty vertical releasing incisions were assessed in 21 patients. At 24 hours after incision, 16 vertical releasing incisions (53.33%) received the maximum score of CSR, while 6 cases (20%) received an EHS of 10. None of the cases received 0 points. Conclusion: The EHS system may be a useful tool for assessing early wound healing in periodontal soft tissue by primary intention after surgery

    Clustered Chimera States in Systems of Type-I Excitability

    Chimera is a fascinating phenomenon of coexisting synchronized and desynchronized behaviour that was discovered in networks of nonlocally coupled identical phase oscillators over ten years ago. Since then, chimeras were found in numerous theoretical and experimental studies and more recently in models of neuronal dynamics as well. In this work, we consider a generic model for a saddle-node bifurcation on a limit cycle representative for neural excitability type I. We obtain chimera states with multiple coherent regions (clustered chimeras/multi-chimeras) depending on the distance from the excitability threshold, the range of nonlocal coupling as well as the coupling strength. A detailed stability diagram for these chimera states as well as other interesting coexisting patterns like traveling waves are presented

    Breaks in interstellar spectra of positrons and electrons derived from time-dependent AMS data

    Until fairly recently, it was widely accepted that local cosmic ray spectra were largely featureless power laws, containing limited information on their acceleration and transport. This viewpoint is currently being revised in the light of evidence for a variety of spectral breaks in the fluxes of cosmic ray nuclei. Here, we focus on cosmic ray electrons and positrons which at the highest energies must be of local origin due to strong radiative losses. We consider a pure diffusion model for their Galactic transport and determine its free parameters by fitting data in a wide energy range: measurements of the interstellar spectrum by Voyager at MeV energies, radio synchrotron data (sensitive to GeV electrons and positrons) and local observations by AMS up to ~ 1 TeV. For the first time, we also model the time-dependent fluxes of cosmic ray electrons and positrons at GeV energies recently presented by AMS, treating solar modulation in a simple extension of the widely used force-field approximation. We are able to reproduce all the available measurements to date. Our model of the interstellar spectrum of cosmic ray electrons and positrons requires the presence of a number of spectral breaks, both in the source spectra and the diffusion coefficients. While we remain agnostic as to the origin of these spectral breaks, their presence will inform future models of the microphysics of cosmic ray acceleration and transport.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures; submitted to PR

    MNE’s Regional Location Choice - A Comparative Perspective on East Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland

    The focus of this article is the empirical identification of factors influencing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in transition economies on a regional level (NUTS 2). The analysis is designed as benchmark between three neighboring post-communist regions, i.e. East Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. Their different transition paths have not only resulted in economic differences. We can also observe today that the importance of pull factors for FDI varies significantly across the regions. This analysis shows that in comparison with Poland and the Czech Republic, East Germany’s major benefit is its purchasing power, its geographical proximity to West European markets, and its modern infrastructure. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that intra-industry linkages such as specialization and agglomeration economies are relevant factors for the location decision of foreign investors.     Extraoral Osseous Choristoma in the Head and Neck Region: Case Report and Literature Review

    An osseous choristoma is a benign tumor consisting of regular bone tissue in an irregular localization. Choristomas in the head and neck region are rare. Most frequently, they are found in the region of the tongue or oral mucosa. There are also very few reports on osseous choristomas in the submandibular region. We present the case of a woman with a large, caudal osseous choristoma within the lateral cervical triangle. Literature review is given about all of the reported cases in the region of the neck. The pathogenesis is yet unexplained. Our case supports the theory that the development of an osseous choristoma is a reaction to a former trauma. Cervical osseous choristomas are seldom, but they represent an important differential diagnosis when dealing with a cervical tumo

    Early wound healing score (EHS): an intra- and inter-examiner reliability study

    The early wound healing score (EHS) was introduced to assess early wound healing of periodontal soft tissues after surgical incision. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the intra- and inter-examiner reliability of the EHS. Six examiners with different levels of training and clinical focus were enrolled. Each examiner was trained on the use of the EHS before starting the study. Thereafter, 63 photographs of three different types of surgical incisions taken at day 1, 3 or 7 post-operatively were independently evaluated according to the proposed assessment method. A two-way random intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to analyze the intra- and inter-examiner reliability for the EHS. The inter-examiner reliability for the EHS was 0.828 (95% CI: 0.767-0.881). The intra-examiner reliability ranged between 0.826 (95% CI: 0.728-0.891) and 0.915 (95% CI: 0.856-0.950). The results therefore show an "almost perfect agreement" for intra- and inter-examiner reliability. The EHS provides a system for reproducible repeated ratings for the early healing assessment of incisions of periodontal soft tissues. Even when used by examiners with different clinical experience and specialty, it shows a high correlation coefficient

    Robust Tests on Fractional Cointegration

    Cointegration describes the pattern that pairs of time series keep together in long run, although they diverge in short run. A generalisation of this behaviour is the fractional cointegration. Two statistical tests, the M– and ML–test are formulated for fractional cointegration in different situations. It turns out that the robust M–test reaches almost the same power as the maximum likelihood test under certain assumptions. In contrast to this, the power of the M–test is much higher than that of the ML–test if the examined time series is contaminated following the general replacement model

    Switching between languages in picture naming incurs a cost associated with inhibition of the non-target language (Meuter & Allport, 1999).This cost is symmetrical in balanced bilinguals and asymmetrical in unbalanced bilinguals with higher cost associated with switching back into L1 (Costa & Santesteban,2004).We investigated whether cost is incurred in similar ways by bidialectals switching between two dialects.To increase generalisablity, we conducted this experiment in 2 locations: in Scotland using Standard Scottish English and Dundonian-Scots bidialectals) and in Germany using German and Öcher bidialectals).We also investigated differences between active vs. passive, and older vs. younger bidialectals
