    This thesis examines a film collection held at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and seeks to establish the historical, cultural and aesthetic legacy of the post-war promotional cruise film. The textual and contextual analysis reveals the cruise film's unique reflection of an era of ideological, social and stylistic change. The thesis establishes an institutional and aesthetic history of the cruise film, focusing on the output of Orient Line, P&O, Union Castle and Cunard. The circumstances surrounding production of promotional material are explored, along with the ideological, commercial and stylistic legacy of the British Documentary Movement and British Transport Film initiative. Prototypical pre-war examples of the form are foregrounded and compared to the films produced through the 1960s. Alongside the cruise film's commercial and aesthetic origins, the thesis explores the image of the ship itself, as an eternal signifier of progress, divinity and nation. The cultural history of the ship as a signifier is traced alongside the visual discourses used to picture it within the cruise film. The 1960s cruise ship and its filmic representation is examined as a floating microcosm of emergent hedonistic and capitalistic tendencies. In an era of empowerment, liberation and increasing individualism, the cruise film balanced the traditional with the contemporary in its sometimes conflicted portrayals of life at sea. The final chapter of the thesis is devoted to the cruise film's reflection of fading British colonialism. As the British Empire fragmented and political liberalism spread throughout a new generation of young people, the cruise film's latent traditionalism and nationalism became anachronistic. Yet, beneath its swinging '60s aesthetic, the post-war cruise film continued to market its product as an implicit emulation of the colonial process. In conclusion, light is shed on the cruise film's paradoxical position, as advertisers sought to retain the allure of the ocean voyage in an era of mainstream jet travel

    Jet-related Excitation of the [CII] Emission in the Active Galaxy NGC 4258 with SOFIA

    We detect widespread [CII]157.7um emission from the inner 5 kpc of the active galaxy NGC 4258 with the SOFIA integral field spectrometer FIFI-LS. The emission is found associated with warm H2, distributed along and beyond the end of southern jet, in a zone known to contain shock-excited optical filaments. It is also associated with soft X-ray hot-spots, which are the counterparts of the `anomalous radio arms' of NGC~4258, and a 1 kpc-long filament on the minor axis of the galaxy which contains young star clusters. Palomar-CWI H-alpha integral field spectroscopy shows that the filament exhibits non-circular motions within NGC 4258. Many of the [CII] profiles are very broad, with the highest line width, 455 km/s, observed at the position of the southern jet bow-shock. Abnormally high ratios of L([CII])/L(FIR) and L([CII])/L(PAH7.7um) are found along and beyond the southern jet and in the X-ray hotspots. These are the same regions that exhibit unusually large intrinsic [CII] line widths. This suggests that the [CII] traces warm molecular gas in shocks and turbulence associated with the jet. We estimate that as much as 40% (3.8 x 10^39 erg/s) of the total [CII] luminosity from the inner 5 kpc of NGC 4258 arises in shocks and turbulence (< 1% bolometric luminosity from the active nucleus), the rest being consistent with [CII] excitation associated with star formation. We propose that the highly-inclined jet is colliding with, and being deflected around, dense irregularities in a thick disk, leading to significant energy dissipation over a wide area of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for Publication in the Astrophysical Journal Oct 29 201

    Shocked POststarbust Galaxy Survey I: Candidate Poststarbust Galaxies with Emission Line Ratios Consistent with Shocks

    [Abridged] The Shocked POststarburst Galaxy Survey (SPOGS) aims to identify transforming galaxies, in which the nebular lines are excited via shocks instead of through star formation processes. Utilizing the OSSY measurements on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 catalog, we applied Balmer absorption and shock boundary criteria to identify 1,067 SPOG candidates (SPOGs*) within z=0.2. SPOGs* represent 0.2% of the OSSY sample galaxies that exceed the continuum signal-to-noise cut (and 0.7% of the emission line galaxy sample). SPOGs* colors suggest that they are in an earlier phase of transition than OSSY galaxies that meet an E+A selection. SPOGs* have a 13% 1.4GHz detection rate from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters survey, higher than most other subsamples, and comparable only to low-ionization nuclear emission line region hosts, suggestive of the presence of active galactic nuclei. SPOGs* also have stronger NaD absorption than predicted from the stellar population, suggestive of cool gas being driven out in galactic winds. It appears that SPOGs* represent an earlier phase in galaxy transformation than traditionally selected poststarburst galaxies, and that a large proportion of SPOGs* also have properties consistent with disruption of their interstellar media, a key component to galaxy transformation. It is likely that many of the known pathways to transformation undergo a SPOG phase. Studying this sample of SPOGs* further, including their morphologies, active galactic nuclei properties, and environments, has the potential for us to build a more complete picture of the initial conditions that can lead to a galaxy evolving.Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables, accepted to ApJ Supplements (Apr 13), full sample is available on www.spogs.or

    Optical Manufacturing and Testing Requirements Identified by the NASA Science Instruments, Observatories and Sensor Systems Technology Assessment

    In August 2010, the NASA Office of Chief Technologist (OCT) commissioned an assessment of 15 different technology areas of importance to the future of NASA. Technology assessment #8 (TA8) was Science Instruments, Observatories and Sensor Systems (SIOSS). SIOSS assess the needs for optical technology ranging from detectors to lasers, x-ray mirrors to microwave antenna, in-situ spectrographs for on-surface planetary sample characterization to large space telescopes. The needs assessment looked across the entirety of NASA and not just the Science Mission Directorate. This paper reviews the optical manufacturing and testing technologies identified by SIOSS which require development in order to enable future NASA high priority missions

    Methods to Obtain the Occupant Perspective

    This chapter summarizes the most important methods for actively engaging occupants in the processes of designing buildings. Each stage in the building life cycle places different demands on the professional-to-occupant relationship. Both objective and subjective data are important in this relationship and raises key epistemological questions about factors that cannot be directly observed—e.g., how do we know what we know about occupant behavior? The chapter guides the reader through this intellectually dangerous terrain by suggesting that the best way to find out what people think is to ask them. Some methods discussed here are familiar to practitioners, including interviews, surveys, focus groups, and direct observation. Others are just entering widespread practice, including virtual reality simulations, ubiquitous sensors and monitoring systems, and momentary ecological assessments. Each method has strengths, weaknesses, and appropriateness for use during certain stages of the building life cycle. The key takeaways from this chapter are that (1) building designers and operators can learn much value from occupants and (2) the new skills needed to engage successfully can be quickly learned. Occupant-centric design approaches that employ these methods improve the likelihood of successful building, interface design, and occupant outcomes

    Estimating Hourly Concentrations of PM2.5 across a Metropolitan Area Using Low-Cost Particle Monitors

    There is concern regarding the heterogeneity of exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) across urban areas leading to negatively biased health effects models. New, low-cost sensors now permit continuous and simultaneous measurements to be made in multiple locations. Measurements of ambient PM were made from October to April 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 to assess the spatial and temporal variability in PM and the relative importance of traffic and wood smoke to outdoor PM concentrations in Rochester, NY, USA. In general, there was moderate spatial inhomogeneity, as indicated by multiple pairwise measures including coefficient of divergence and signed rank tests of the value distributions. Pearson correlation coefficients were often moderate (~50% of units showed correlations &gt;0.5 during the first season), indicating that there was some coherent variation across the area, likely driven by a combination of meteorological conditions (wind speed, direction, and mixed layer heights) and the concentration of PM2.5 being transported into the region. Although the accuracy of these PM sensors is limited, they are sufficiently precise relative to one another and to research grade instruments that they can be useful is assessing the spatial and temporal variations across an area and provide concentration estimates based on higher-quality central site monitoring data
