    NEWS: the near-infrared Echelle for wideband spectroscopy

    We present an updated optical and mechanical design of NEWS: the Near-infrared Echelle for Wide-band Spectroscopy (formerly called HiJaK: the High-resolution J, H and K spectrometer), a compact, high-resolution, near-infrared spectrometer for 5-meter class telescopes. NEWS provides a spectral resolution of 60,000 and covers the full 0.8-2.5 micron range in 5 modes. We adopt a compact, lightweight, monolithic design and developed NEWS to be mounted to the instrument cube at the Cassegrain focus of the the new 4.3-meter Discovery Channel Telescope.Comment: Proc.     Resolving and Tuning Mechanical Anisotropy in Black Phosphorus via Nanomechanical Multimode Resonance Spectromicroscopy

    Black phosphorus (P) has emerged as a layered semiconductor with a unique crystal structure featuring corrugated atomic layers and strong in-plane anisotropy in its physical properties. Here, we demonstrate that the crystal orientation and mechanical anisotropy in free-standing black P thin layers can be precisely determined by spatially resolved multimode nanomechanical resonances. This offers a new means for resolving important crystal orientation and anisotropy in black P device platforms in situ beyond conventional optical and electrical calibration techniques. Furthermore, we show that electrostatic-gating-induced straining can continuously tune the mechanical anisotropic effects on multimode resonances in black P electromechanical devices. Combined with finite element modeling (FEM), we also determine the Young's moduli of multilayer black P to be 116.1 and 46.5 GPa in the zigzag and armchair directions, respectively.Comment: Main Text: 13 Pages, 4 Figures; Supplementary Information: 5 Pages, 2 Figures, 2 Table

    Perceived similarity and visual descriptions in content-based image retrieval

    The use of low-level feature descriptors is pervasive in content-based image retrieval tasks and the answer to the question of how well these features describe users’ intention is inconclusive. In this paper we devise experiments to gauge the degree of alignment between the description of target images by humans and that implicitly provided by low-level image feature descriptors. Data was collected on how humans perceive similarity in images. Using images judged by humans to be similar, as ground truth, the performance of some MPEG-7 visual feature descriptors were evaluated. It is found that various descriptors play different roles in different queries and their appropriate combination can improve the performance of retrieval tasks. This forms a basis for the development of adaptive weight assignment to features depending on the query and retrieval task

    The influence of aliphatic side chain of anacardic acid on molecular recognition properties of imprinted polymers

    The objective of this work was to determine the influence of the aliphatic side chain of anacardic acid on molecular recognition properties of imprinted polymers made from anacardanyl methacrylate (AnMcr). Salicylic methacrylate (SaMcr), a structural analog of AnMcr, was synthesized and used as a functional monomer to prepare imprinted polymers for comparison with AnMcr-based polymers. Using divinylbenzene (DVB) as a cross linker and racemic propranolol as a model template, irregular monolithic particles of poly(SaMcr-co-DVB)m were synthesized in toluene, and spherical beads of poly(SaMcr-co-DVB)b and poly(AnMcr-co-DVB)b weresynthesized in acetonitrile by precipitation polymerization. Although imprinted irregular monolithic particles, poly(SaMcr-co-DVB)m, tested in toluene containing 0.5% acetic acid, displayed relatively low specific propranolol binding, they showed high molecular selectivity. For the spherical beads tested in acetonitrile, both imprinted poly(AnMcr-co-DVB)b and poly(SaMcrco-DVB)b showed obvious specific propranolol binding despite the use of polar organic solvent during imprinting. Imprinted poly(AnMcr-co-DVB)b showed higher molecular selectivity than imprinted poly(SaMcr-co-DVB)b. Interestingly, the presence of the aliphatic side chain in AnMcr resulted in more uniform imprinted beads as compared to particle agglomerates obtained from SaMcr in the presence of propranolol template. Therefore, the aliphatic side chain of anacardic acid improves both molecular recognition of imprinted polymers as well as the formation  of uniform imprinted spherical beads.Keywords: Molecular imprinting, anacardanyl methacrylate, salicylic methacrylate, propranolol, precipitation polymerizatio
