Life systems for a lunar base

    Get PDF
The Biosphere 2 project is pioneering work on life systems that can serve as a prototype for long-term habitation on the Moon. This project will also facilitate the understanding of the smaller systems that will be needed for initial lunar base life-support functions. In its recommendation for a policy for the next 50 years in space, the National Commission on Space urged, 'To explore and settle the inner Solar System, we must develop biospheres of smaller size, and learn how to build and maintain them' (National Commission on Space, 1986). The Biosphere 2 project, along with its Biospheric Research and Development Center, is a materially closed and informationally and energetically open system capable of supporting a human crew of eight, undertaking work to meet this need. This paper gives an overview of the Space Biospheres Ventures' endeavor and its lunar applications

Determinants of Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change among Smallholder Rural Households in the Bongo District, Ghana

This study examined the determinants of adaptive capacity of smallholder rural households to climate change in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. It employed a mixed method approach involving questionnaire survey of 150 households randomly selected from two communities within the district, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. The results of a binary logistic regression model indicates that five predictor variables (education of the household, farming experience, farm size, belief system and training) out of 11 tested determinants were significant at 1%, 5% and 10% probability levels. Forward stepwise (likelihood ratio) showed that these five variables had explained 61% of the total variances in households’ adaptive capacity. The study concludes that attempts to support household adaptation strategies to climate change should pay considerable attention to understanding socio-economic factors, including education and belief systems, in order to develop sustainable strategies that will be culturally accepted by communities. Keywords: Adaptation, Education and Training, Experience, Livelihood, Socio-cultural Factor

Political Factors and Enforcement of the Nursing Home Regulatory Regime

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the influence of political factors, oversight, and nursing home affiliation or ownership status on the enforcement of the nursing home regulatory regime, signified by the Nursing Home Reform Act ( NHRA ) and its progeny. Specifically speaking, it measures, using the statistical technique of regression analysis, factors that account for variations across states in the number of deficiencies (or violations of quality standards) cited by nursing home inspectors across the states. This work is a first of its kind, an analysis not government-related, by a set of public administration scholars that systematically studies the influence of political forces on nursing home regulations and inspection and their ultimate effect on the well-being of nursing home patients

Background: Promotion of drugs by pharmaceutical industries is fully regulated by drug regulators. Doctors are focus of intense marketing by representatives of pharmaceutical companies (MR). It is reported that very few physicians are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to critically assess the information delivered in drug promotional literature (DPL). Hence this study was carried out with the objective to determine knowledge, attitude and practices of doctors about the DPL Methods: This was a questionnaire-based study population included clinicians working in a government set up and others doing private practice. Questionnaire was circulated online on social media platforms via Google forms. Results: The 32.11% participants were aware of regulations and guidelines of DPL in India  80.7% participants searched  for cost of medicine on DPL, 54.12% respondents perceive that the product claims made on DPL are balanced and supported by good evidence, 56.88% participants opined that their integrity is compromised by accepting gift  from MR, 43.1% participants are exposed to drug advertisement through social media and 51.06% of them opined that their prescribing habits are influenced through this. Writing brand names while prescribing is significantly more in private practitioners   as compared to doctors employed in government set up. Conclusions: DPL serves to update the knowledge of the busy clinicians of the latest developments in the medical field. Quality check of drug promotion on social media is the need of the hour as this is influential. Private practitioners need to be addressed regarding enforced laws for rational prescribing

Validation of a CT-free navigation system for the measurement of native acetabular alignment

Computer assisted surgery is becoming more frequently used in medical world. OrthoPilot Hip Suite CT-free navigation system (BBraun Aesculap) is one such computer assisted navigation system used for total hip replacement surgery. The validity of OrthoPilot system remains to be determined independent of the manufacturer. The main aims of this study were to investigate the accuracy of OrthoPilot data, while using surgical instruments and to confirm the suitability of the cup navigation algorithm. OrthoPilot was compared with the gold standard of a VICON movement analysis system. An aluminium pelvic phantom was machined with high accuracy to perform the experiments. Data were captured simultaneously from both OrthoPilot and VICON systems and acetabular angles were compared. Both systems produce comparable results for the distance between anatomical landmarks and acetabular angles. It can be concluded that data from OrthoPilot system, if used correctly, are sufficiently accurate for orthopaedic applications
