    Nanorod Photocatalysts for C-O Cross-Coupling Reactions

    Carbon-heteroatom cross-coupling reactions are significant for numerous industrial chemical processes, in particular for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and biologically active compounds. Photocatalyst/transition metal dual catalytic systems pave a new avenue for organic cross-coupling reactions. Specifically, the use of semiconductor nanoparticles as heterogeneous light sensitizers is highly beneficial for industrial-scale applications owing to their low-cost production, tunable photophysical properties, facile separation, high photostability, and recyclability. Here, CdSe@CdS nanorod photocatalysts are combined with a Ni complex catalyst for the promotion of selective light-induced C-O cross-coupling reactions between aryl halides and alkyl carboxylic acids. This efficient dual photocatalytic system displays a high yield (similar to 96 %), with an impressive turnover number (TON) of over 3x10(6), and within a relatively short reaction time as a result of high turnover frequency (TOF) of similar to 56 s(-1). In addition, the nanorod photocatalysts harness light with improved solar to product efficiency compared to alternative systems, signaling towards potential solar-powered chemistry. A reaction mechanism involving energy transfer from the nanorods to the Ni complex is proposed and discussed, along with specific benefits of the seeded rod morphology

    Squeezed-light generation in a nonlinear planar waveguide with a periodic corrugation

    Two-mode nonlinear interaction (second-harmonic and second-subharmonic generation) in a planar waveguide with a small periodic corrugation at the surface is studied. Scattering of the interacting fields on the corrugation leads to constructive interference that enhances the nonlinear process provided that all the interactions are phase matched. Conditions for the overall phase matching are found. Compared with a perfectly quasi-phase-matched waveguide, better values of squeezing as well as higher intensities are reached under these conditions. Procedure for finding optimum values of parameters for squeezed-light generation is described.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure

    Prediction of rehabilitation induced motor recovery after stroke using a multi-dimensional and multi-modal approach

    Background: Stroke is a debilitating disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Despite the survival rate has significantly increased over the years, many stroke survivors are left with severe impairments impacting their quality of life. Rehabilitation programs have proved to be successful in improving the recovery process. However, a reliable model of sensorimotor recovery and a clear identification of predictive markers of rehabilitation-induced recovery are still needed. This article introduces the cross-modality protocols designed to investigate the rehabilitation treatment’s effect in a group of stroke survivors. Methods/design: A total of 75 stroke patients, admitted at the IRCCS San Camillo rehabilitation Hospital in Venice (Italy), will be included in this study. Here, we describe the rehabilitation programs, clinical, neuropsychological, and physiological/imaging [including electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques] protocols set up for this study. Blood collection for the characterization of predictive biological biomarkers will also be taken. Measures derived from data acquired will be used as candidate predictors of motor recovery. Discussion/summary: The integration of cutting-edge physiological and imaging techniques, with clinical and cognitive assessment, dose of rehabilitation and biological variables will provide a unique opportunity to define a predictive model of recovery in stroke patients. Taken together, the data acquired in this project will help to define a model of rehabilitation induced sensorimotor recovery, with the final aim of developing personalized treatments promoting the greatest chance of recovery of the compromised functions

Plants not only use light for photosynthesis, but also as a cue for proper development. As a seedling emerges from soil it must determine the light environment and adopt an appropriate growth habit. When blue and red wavelengths are the dominant sources of light, plants will undergo photomorphogenesis. Photomorphogenesis describes a number of developmental responses initiated by light in a seedling, and includes shortened stems and establishing the ability to photosynthesize. The genes regulating photomorphogenesis have been studied extensively, but a complete picture remains elusive. Here we describe the finding that NUCLEAR FACTOR-Y (NF-Y) genes are positive regulators of photomorphogenesis—i.e., in plants where NF-Y genes are mutated, they display some characteristics of dark grown plants, even though they are in the light. Our data suggests that the roles of NF-Y genes in light perception do not fit in easily with those of other described pathways.     Perceived Social Support and Well-Being of International Students at an Italian University

    The present study aims at exploring international students’ well-being in relation to their perception of social support and dispersion of dependency on various resources. The participants were 139 international students at an Italian university who completed the WHO-5 Well-being Index, Symptom Checklist 90-R, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Dependency Grids. The results show that higher well-being is correlated with higher support and lower distress and that higher dispersion of dependency was associated with higher perceived support. International students who seek professional psychological help also report lower well-being, higher distress, and fewer resources compared with those who do not seek psychological support. Further, coming from collectivist cultures (rather than individualist ones) as well as being a long-term (rather than short-term) student was mostly associated with higher distress and less perceived support. These results suggest that counseling services for international students should help them find new sources of social support

    The effect of caerulein (100 ng/kg/h X 1 h) on basal as well as on thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-stimulated prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) secretion was studied in healthy male volunteers. The peptide did not change the basal levels of prolactin and TSH. However, during the infusion of caerulein, prolactin response to TRH was significantly increased whereas the TSH response was decreased. These data, showing an action of caerulein (a frog peptide which mimics the biological actions of cholecystokinin) on prolactin and TSH release, suggest that cholecystokinin may be involved in the physiological control of human pituitary secretion

    Idiopathic segmental infarction of the greater omentum: a rare cause of acute abdomen

    Idiopathic segmental infarction of the greater omentum is a rare cause of acute abdomen. Patients, typically children or obese males in their fifties, present with abdominal pain located in the right upper or lower quadrant, mimicking cholecystitis and appendicitis. CT scanning and ultrasound imaging both may show a well-circumscribed soft tissue mass. Retrospective review of all patients treated for idiopathic segmental infarction of the greater omentum occurred from January 1993 to December 2001. Nine patients were treated successfully, six surgically and three medically. Conservative management of segmental infarction of the greater omentum can be proposed when correctly diagnosed by ultrasound imaging or CT scanning and the patient's condition is stable.     The aim of this study is to describe personal experience with retroperitoneal laparostomy in the management of infected acute necrotizing pancreatitis. The presence of an infected phlegmon requires surgical debridement and drainage. The surgical approach can be either an anterior laparotomy with irrigation and drainage (which can be either an open or closed laparotomy) or a posterior laparostomy. Three patients (2 men and 1 woman) presented with an unfavourable course of their acute necrotizing pancreatitis despite the administration of broad spectrum antibiotics. A posterior laparostomy with necrosectomy and drainage was performed. The postoperative course was slowly favorable in all 3 cases. Abdominal CT is the best modality for the detection and follow-up of pancreatic necrosis. CT-guided fine needle aspiration can detect superinfection of areas of necrosis. Posterior laparostomy presents several advantages compared to an anterior approach. There is no contamination of the peritoneal cavity; the integrity of the abdominal wall is respected.
