    Influence of Culture and Management Systems on PMS

    Purpose: The aim of this study is to find and explore the relationships between organizational culture, management Systems and the implementation and Operationalisation aspects of Performance Measurement Systems (PMS). Design/methodology/approach: The relevant literature on organizational culture, Organizational behavior, Strategic management and management accounting, in the context of performance measurement systems, will be examined. A structured questionnaire will be used to survey the views of the top management teams of a suitable sample of organizations. The survey implementation process will follow four steps: pre-­‐notification, initial mailing, first follow up and, second follow up. Findings: As this is a developmental paper, it is not possible to provide definite findings at this point. However, it is anticipated to find out relationship between Culture, Management systems and PMS. Practical implications: The findings of this study will provide managers with better understanding of the relationship between organizational culture, management systems and PMS. This will in turn help them to provide a successful PMS. Originality/value: No research has been done to find out the relationship between organizational culture, management systems and two aspects of PMS, namely implementation and operationalisation aspects, using a large-­‐scale sample approach. The findings of this research therefore will provide useful insights and methods for future researchers in this area

The overall aim of this research is to understand the relationships between PM and organizational culture in the context of Bangladesh. Case study approach was adopted to achieve the overall aim. The findings suggest that adopting authoritative management style at these organisations enabled successful implementation of PMS, which is fuelled by highly motivated employees with performance related reward system.However, lack of expertise, trained workforce and holistic implementation are acting as significant barriers and preventing themfrom full potential benefits

    Sub-chronic ketamine administration increases dopamine synthesis capacity in the mouse midbrain: a preclinical in vivo PET study

    PURPOSE: There is robust evidence that people with schizophrenia show elevated dopamine (DA) synthesis capacity in the striatum. This finding comes from positron emission tomography (PET) studies using radiolabelled l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (18F-DOPA). DA synthesis capacity also appears to be elevated in the midbrain of people with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. We therefore aimed to optimise a method to quantify 18F-DOPA uptake in the midbrain of mice, and to utilise this method to quantify DA synthesis capacity in the midbrain of the sub-chronic ketamine model of schizophrenia-relevant hyperdopaminergia. PROCEDURES: Adult male C57Bl6 mice were treated daily with either ketamine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle (saline) for 5 days. On day 7, animals were administered 18F-DOPA (i.p.) and scanned in an Inveon PET/CT scanner. Data from the saline-treated group were used to optimise an atlas-based template to position the midbrain region of interest and to determine the analysis parameters which resulted in the greatest intra-group consistency. These parameters were then used to compare midbrain DA synthesis capacity (KiMod) between ketamine- and saline-treated animals. RESULTS: Using an atlas-based template to position the 3.7 mm3 midbrain ROI with a T*-Tend window of 15-140 min to estimate KiMod resulted in the lowest intra-group variability and moderate test-retest agreement. Using these parameters, we found that KiMod was elevated in the midbrain of ketamine-treated animals in comparison to saline-treated animals (t(22) = 2.19, p = 0.048). A positive correlation between DA synthesis capacity in the striatum and the midbrain was also evident in the saline-treated animals (r2 = 0.59, p = 0.005) but was absent in ketamine-treated animals (r2 = 0.004, p = 0.83). CONCLUSIONS: Using this optimised method for quantifying 18F-DOPA uptake in the midbrain, we found that elevated striatal DA synthesis capacity in the sub-chronic ketamine model extends to the midbrain. Interestingly, the dysconnectivity between the midbrain and striatum seen in this model is also evident in the clinical population. This model may therefore be ideal for assessing novel compounds which are designed to modulate pre-synaptic DA synthesis capacity

    Generic Mechanism of Emergence of Amyloid Protofilaments from Disordered Oligomeric aggregates

    The presence of oligomeric aggregates, which is often observed during the process of amyloid formation, has recently attracted much attention since it has been associated with neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. We provide a description of a sequence-indepedent mechanism by which polypeptide chains aggregate by forming metastable oligomeric intermediate states prior to converting into fibrillar structures. Our results illustrate how the formation of ordered arrays of hydrogen bonds drives the formation of beta-sheets within the disordered oligomeric aggregates that form early under the effect of hydrophobic forces. Initially individual beta-sheets form with random orientations, which subsequently tend to align into protofilaments as their lengths increases. Our results suggest that amyloid aggregation represents an example of the Ostwald step rule of first order phase transitions by showing that ordered cross-beta structures emerge preferentially from disordered compact dynamical intermediate assemblies.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    The Turkish Version of the Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR)

    The Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR) is a new parent/patient reported outcome measure that enables a thorough assessment of the disease status in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We report the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the parent and patient versions of the JAMAR in the Turkish language. The reading comprehension of the questionnaire was tested in 10 JIA parents and patients. Each participating centre was asked to collect demographic, clinical data and the JAMAR in 100 consecutive JIA patients or all consecutive patients seen in a 6-month period and to administer the JAMAR to 100 healthy children and their parents. The statistical validation phase explored descriptive statistics and the psychometric issues of the JAMAR: the 3 Likert assumptions, floor/ceiling effects, internal consistency, Cronbach\u27s alpha, interscale correlations, test-retest reliability, and construct validity (convergent and discriminant validity). A total of 466 JIA patients (13.7% systemic, 40.6% oligoarticular, 22.5% RF negative poly-arthritis, and 23.2% other categories) and 93 healthy children were enrolled in four centres. The JAMAR components discriminated well-healthy subjects from JIA patients. All JAMAR components revealed good psychometric performances. In conclusion, the Turkish version of the JAMAR is a valid tool for the assessment of children with JIA and is suitable for use both in routine clinical practice and clinical research

    A comparison of the measurement properties of the Juvenile Arthritis Functional Assessment Scale with the childhood health assessment questionnaire in daily practice

    We compared the measurement properties of a performance test (Juvenile Arthritis Functional Assessment Scale; JAFAS) with a questionnaire-based instrument (Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire; CHAQ) to measure functional ability in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis on the level of individual items. In 28 consecutive children visiting an outpatient paediatrics clinic, the JAFAS (range 0–20) and CHAQ (range 0–3) were applied, and measures of disease activity and joint range of motion (ROM) were determined. Twenty-eight children with a median age of 10 years and median disease duration of 3.2 years were included. The median JAFAS score was 0, and the median CHAQ score was 0.125. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.92 for the JAFAS and 0.96 for the CHAQ. The Spearman correlation coefficient between the JAFAS and the CHAQ was 0.55 (P < 0.01). With six out of ten items, the JAFAS classified the child as less disabled than with corresponding CHAQ activities. Overall, associations with measures of disease activity and ROM were higher for the CHAQ than for the JAFAS. A performance test (JAFAS) does not appear to have an added benefit over the questionnaire-based assessment (CHAQ) of physical function in a cross-sectional study

    How do parents of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) perceive their therapies?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies are commonly used by pediatric patients with chronic medical conditions. Little is known about parents' perceptions of these therapies. This study describes the views of parents of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) regarding conventional and CAM therapies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Parents of children with JIA seen at a pediatric rheumatology clinic were surveyed between June 1 and July 31, 2007. Questionnaires asked about patients' use of over 75 therapies in the past 30 days, their perceived helpfulness (0 = not helpful; 3 = very helpful), perceived side effects (0 = none; 3 = severe), and whether each therapy would be recommended to other patients with JIA (Yes, No, Not sure).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Questionnaires were returned by 52/76 (68%) parents; patients' average age was 10.9 years and 87% were Caucasian. Medications were used by 45 (88%) patients; heat (67%) and extra rest (54%) were also commonly used. CAM therapies were used by 48 (92%), e.g., massage (54%), vitamins and other supplements (54%), avoiding foods that worsened pain (35%) and stress management techniques (33%). Among the therapies rated by 3 or more parents, those that scored 2.5 or higher on helpfulness were: biologic medications, methotrexate, naproxen, wheelchairs, orthotics, heat, vitamins C and D, music, support groups and prayer. CAM therapies had 0 median side effects and parents would recommend many of them to other families.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>JIA patients use diverse therapies. Parents report that many CAM therapies are helpful and would recommend them to other parents. These data can be used in counseling patients and guiding future research.</p

    Intelligent data analysis to interpret major risk factors for diabetic patients with and without ischemic stroke in a small population

    This study proposes an intelligent data analysis approach to investigate and interpret the distinctive factors of diabetes mellitus patients with and without ischemic (non-embolic type) stroke in a small population. The database consists of a total of 16 features collected from 44 diabetic patients. Features include age, gender, duration of diabetes, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, triglyceride levels, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, peripheral vascular disease, myocardial infarction rate, glucose level, medication and blood pressure. Metric and non-metric features are distinguished. First, the mean and covariance of the data are estimated and the correlated components are observed. Second, major components are extracted by principal component analysis. Finally, as common examples of local and global classification approach, a k-nearest neighbor and a high-degree polynomial classifier such as multilayer perceptron are employed for classification with all the components and major components case. Macrovascular changes emerged as the principal distinctive factors of ischemic-stroke in diabetes mellitus. Microvascular changes were generally ineffective discriminators. Recommendations were made according to the rules of evidence-based medicine. Briefly, this case study, based on a small population, supports theories of stroke in diabetes mellitus patients and also concludes that the use of intelligent data analysis improves personalized preventive intervention
