Pointe Sainte-Anne: A History of Acadians on the Saint John River

In 1759, a brutal event occurred in the area now known as Fredericton. A company of rangers led by Moses Hazen raided the Acadian village of Pointe Sainte-Anne, scalped women and children who were over-wintering in the area until the snow melted enough for them to flee north to Quebec. Yet the historical narrative of the area has only passing mention of the Acadian presence in Fredericton. This article re-centres the French presence on the Wolostoq River, their role in maintaining alliances with the Wabanaki, and the displacement and upheaval caused by the imperial contests between Britain and France. &nbsp

This article examines the Acadian community of Beaubassin with a view to better understanding its social hierarchy and the relationships between colonists and their Mi’kmaq neighbours during the period up to 1751. Beaubassin has long been the least understood Acadian community, due in part to its distance from the colonial capital at Port Royal and also because its parish registers are not complete. However, social network analysis can provide new insights. The authors study families across generations, re-interpret a local witchcraft trial, and take a fresh look at the presence of Aboriginal peoples, determining that Beaubassin was a community of growing complexity and with stronger connections to the Mi’kmaq than previously understood.

The impact of new forms of large-scale general practice provider collaborations on England's NHS: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, collaboration between general practices in England to form new provider networks and large-scale organisations has been driven largely by grassroots action among GPs. However, it is now being increasingly advocated for by national policymakers. Expectations of what scaling up general practice in England will achieve are significant. AIM: To review the evidence of the impact of new forms of large-scale general practice provider collaborations in England. DESIGN AND SETTING: Systematic review. METHOD: Embase, MEDLINE, Health Management Information Consortium, and Social Sciences Citation Index were searched for studies reporting the impact on clinical processes and outcomes, patient experience, workforce satisfaction, or costs of new forms of provider collaborations between general practices in England. RESULTS: A total of 1782 publications were screened. Five studies met the inclusion criteria and four examined the same general practice networks, limiting generalisability. Substantial financial investment was required to establish the networks and the associated interventions that were targeted at four clinical areas. Quality improvements were achieved through standardised processes, incentives at network level, information technology-enabled performance dashboards, and local network management. The fifth study of a large-scale multisite general practice organisation showed that it may be better placed to implement safety and quality processes than conventional practices. However, unintended consequences may arise, such as perceptions of disenfranchisement among staff and reductions in continuity of care. CONCLUSION: Good-quality evidence of the impacts of scaling up general practice provider organisations in England is scarce. As more general practice collaborations emerge, evaluation of their impacts will be important to understand which work, in which settings, how, and why

The 13th Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics

Ngā mihi aroha ki ngā tangata katoa and warm greetings to you all. Welcome to Herenga Delta 2021, the Thirteenth Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics. It has been ten years since the Volcanic Delta Conference in Rotorua, and we are excited to have the Delta community return to Aotearoa New Zealand, if not in person, then by virtual means. Although the limits imposed by the pandemic mean that most of this year’s 2021 participants are unable to set foot in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, this has certainly not stopped interest in this event. Participants have been invited to draw on the concept of herenga, in Te Reo Māori usually a mooring place where people from afar come to share their knowledge and experiences. Although many of the participants are still some distance away, the submissions that have been sent in will continue to stimulate discussion on mathematics and statistics undergraduate education in the Delta tradition. The conference invited papers, abstracts and posters, working within the initial themes of Values and Variables. The range of submissions is diverse, and will provide participants with many opportunities to engage, discuss, and network with colleagues across the Delta community. The publications for this thirteenth Delta Conference include publications in the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, iJMEST, (available at https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/tmes20/collections/Herenga-Delta-2021), the Conference Proceedings, and the Programme (which has created some interesting challenges around time-zones), by the Local Organizing Committee. Papers in the iJMEST issue and the Proceedings were peer reviewed by at least two reviewers per paper. Of the ten submissions to the Proceedings, three were accepted. We are pleased to now be at the business end of the conference and hope that this event will carry on the special atmosphere of the many Deltas which have preceded this one. We hope that you will enjoy this conference, the virtual and social experiences that accompany it, and take the opportunity to contribute to further enhancing mathematics and statistics undergraduate education.
