Should family firms internationalize? Evidence from the Survey of Business Owners
The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics and performance of family-owned firms with internationalization. We were motivated to determine if there were significant differences between family-owned firms with internationalization and other firm types, specifically, family-owned firms without internationalization and non-family-owned firms. The study draws on the Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners (SBO) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS). SBO response variables regarding owner demographics, business acquisition, business context, and a number of business performance outcome measures were the outcome variables of interest in this study. A comparison of means was applied to test whether or not there were differences in response variables across the family-owned and non-family-owned firm types. The results indicated that family-owned firms with internationalization, on average, had lower business closures and higher sales than the other firm types, and that firms with internationalization were more efficient in terms of sales per employee and sales per payroll. This study contributes to understanding the characteristics and performance between family-owned and non-family-owned firms in conjunction with those that internationalize and those that did not internationalize. A novel feature of the study experimental design was the incorporation of primary owner characteristics and whether there were any business acquisition, attribute, and performance correlations. The findings suggest practical implications for business growth strategy with regards to exporting, establishing international operations, or outsourcing business functions out of the USA. The study concludes with a discussion of the findings and offers potential future research directions
Developments in the High Precision Control of Magnet Currents for LHC
The LHC will require over 1700 magnet power converters, some of which will need an unprecedented precision of about 1 ppm (of 13 kA). This paper presents the approach taken, prototype methods, initial results and charts future design directions. These results confirm that such performance can be obtained reliably and at a reduced cost compared to conventional methods. Developments of a real-time controls infrastructure needed to support on-line beam feedback are outlined
A Strategy for Controlling the LHC Magnet Currents
The LHC will require an unprecedented precision of a few ppm in the control of the current in the major magnetic circuits. As a result of the optimisation of the machine design, the machine will be powered in eight sectors with separate power converters. This scheme, along with other operational constraints, has led to a re-evaluation of the methods needed to ensure adequate performance. An overview of the strategy envisaged to meet this new challenge is presented, along with details of digital control and correction methods, new techniques for analogue to digital conversion and improvements in DC current transducers above 10 kA
No overall impact on rate of weight gain with integrase inhibitor-containing regimens in antiretroviral-naĂŻve adults
OBJECTIVES: Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) are commonplace in modern antiretroviral therapy (ART). Increased weight gain with their use is increasingly scrutinized. We evaluated weight changes in treatment-naïve adults with HIV-1 attending a UK centre who started regimens including raltegravir or dolutegravir. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adults prescribed an INSTI between January 2015 and March 2020 were categorized as having started an ART regimen containing raltegravir, dolutegravir, a protease inhibitor or a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Individuals with one or more weight measurement ≤ 5 years both pre- and post-ART initiation, who started a three-drug regimen with ≥ 6 months duration and achieved virological suppression (< 50 copies/mL) within 6 months were included. A random effects model with linear slope pre- and post-ART was used, adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, ART regimen, backbone and year of initiation. RESULTS: The cohort included 390 adults; 88.7% were male, 66.4% were of white ethnicity, their median age was 40 years, there was a median of six weight measurements, 2.2 years from diagnosis to ART initiation, 2.9 years from ART to the last weight measurement, and weight and body mass index at initiation were 75 kg and 24.1 kg/m2 respectively. Of these, 254 (65%) started an INSTI. The average pre-ART rate of weight gain was 0.44 kg/year [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.19-0.70], increasing to 0.88 kg/year (0.63-1.10, p = 0.04) after ART initiation. Our adjusted model found no evidence of an association between ART regimen and rate of weight gain. CONCLUSIONS: Weight increased in the cohort both pre- and post-ART. We found no evidence of a higher rate of weight gain following ART initiation with an INSTI compared with other regimens
Evaluation of subcutaneous proleukin (Interleukin-2) in a randomized international trial (ESPRIT): Geographical and gender differences in the baseline characteristics of participants
Background: ESPRIT, is a phase III, open-label, randomized, international clinical trial evaluating the effects of subcutaneous recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) plus antiretroviral therapy (ART) versus ART alone on HIV-disease progression and death in HIV-1-infected individuals with CD4+ T-cells ≥300 cells/μL. Objectives: To describe the baseline characteristics of participants randomized to ESPRIT overall and by geographic location. Method: Baseline characteristics of randomized participants were summarized by region. Results: 4,150 patients were enrolled in ESPRIT from 254 sites in 25 countries. 41%, 27%, 16%, 11%, and 5% were enrolled in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia, respectively. The median age was 40 years, 81% were men, and 76%, 11%, and 9% were Caucasian, Asian, and African American or African, respectively. 44% of women enrolled (n = 769) were enrolled in Thailand and Argentina. Overall, 55% and 38% of the cohort acquired HIV through male homosexual and heterosexual contact, respectively. 25% had a prior history of AIDS-defining illness; Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, M. tuberculosis, and esophageal candida were most commonly reported. Median nadir and baseline CD4+ T-cell counts were 199 and 458 cells/μL, respectively. 6% and 13% were hepatitis B or C virus coinfected, respectively. Median duration of antiretroviral therapy (ART) was 4.2 years; the longest median duration was in Australia (5.2 years) and the shortest was in Asia (2.3 years). 17%, 13%, and 69% of participants began ART before 1995, between 1996 and 1997, and from 1998 onward, respectively. 86% used ART from two or more ART classes, with 49% using a protease inhibitor-based regimen and 46% using a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based regimen. 78% had plasma HIV RNA below detection (<500 cp/mL). Conclusion: ESPRIT has enrolled a diverse population of HIV-infected individuals including large populations of women and patients of African-American/African and Asian ethnicity often underrepresented in HIV research. As a consequence, the results of the study may have wide global applicability
Performance of human papillomavirus DNA detection in residual specimens taken for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae nucleic acid amplification testing in men who have sex with men
OBJECTIVES: Rectal swab specimens, either alone or pooled with first-void urine (FVU) and pharyngeal swab specimens, are used to test for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infection in men who have sex with men (MSM). Following introduction of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for MSM attending UK sexual health services (SHSs), HPV testing of residual CT/NG test specimens has been proposed to monitor HPV prevalence in this population. Performance of HPV detection in such specimens has not been evaluated previously. METHODS: MSM attending a UK SHS provided three specimens: (1) rectal swab for CT/NG, (2) pooled rectal/pharyngeal/FVU specimen for CT/NG and (3) dedicated anal swab for HPV. Specimen 3 and residual material from specimens 1 and 2 were tested for type-specific HPV DNA. HPV detection was by an in-house multiplex PCR and luminex-based genotyping assay. RESULTS: A total of 129 MSM were recruited with a mean age of 38.1 years; 24% were HIV-positive. Of the 129 MSM, 92 (71%) had any type-specific HPV DNA in ≥1 specimen; 80 (62%) had high risk (HR) HPV. Of 123 participants with sufficient residual pooled and dedicated specimens, 70 (56.9%) had detectable HPV on both, and 40 (32.5%) were negative on both; overall concordance was 89% (95% CI 83% to 94%), and kappa statistic was 0.78 (95% CI 0.66 to 0.89). Pooled samples had a 4.1% (95% CI -1.9% to 10.0%) higher test positivity rate than dedicated samples.Of 125 participants with sufficient residual rectal and specimens, 74 (59.2%) had detectable HPV on both, and 36 (28.8%) were negative on both; overall concordance was 88% (95% CI 81% to 93%), and kappa statistic was 0.74 (95% CI 0.61 to 0.86). Residual rectal samples had 5.6% (95%CI -0.6% to 11.8%) higher test positivity than dedicated samples. CONCLUSIONS: We observed high concordance between the dedicated and residual STI test specimens. Our data support the strategy of testing residual specimens for HPV prevalence monitoring in MSM to evaluate the impact of the targeted vaccination programme
Day of Archaeology 2011–2017: Global Community, Public Engagement, and Digital Practice.
The Day of Archaeology (http://www.dayofarchaeology.com) was a volunteer-led international archaeological blogging event that ran from 2011 to 2017. The project asked people who define themselves as archaeologists to submit one or more blog posts about their working day on a chosen day in June or July. This article explores the history of the Day of Archaeology project and the practicalities of running a large-scale collaborative blogging project, before examining some of the topics covered in the posts. An assessment of the impact of the project follows. Overall, we hope in this work to answer some of the basic questions regarding this type of collaborative, online, global engagement – what we did, who we reached, what they talked about – and also to provide some insights for any other similar initiatives that may follow us in the future
Crowd- and Community-fuelled Archaeological Research. Early Results from the MicroPasts Project
The MicroPasts project is a novel experiment in the use of crowd-based methodologies to enable participatory
archaeological research. Building on a long tradition of offline community archaeology in the UK, this initiative aims to
integrate crowd-sourcing, crowd-funding and forum-based discussion to encourage groups of academics and volunteers
to collaborate on the web. This paper will introduce MicroPasts, its aims, methods and initial results, with a particular
emphasis on project evaluation. The evaluative work conducted over the first few months of the project already
demonstrates the potential for crowd-sourced archaeological 3D modelling, especially amongst younger audiences,
next to more traditional kinds of crowd-sourcing such as transcription. It has also allowed a comparative assessment
of different methods for sustaining contributor participation through time and a discussion of their implications for
the sustainability of the MicroPasts project and (potentially) other archaeological crowd-sourcing endeavours
