The Spitzer c2d Survey Of Nearby Dense Cores. X. Star Formation In L673 And Cb188
L673 and CB188 are two low-mass clouds isolated from large star-forming regions that were observed as part of the Spitzer Legacy Project "From Molecular Clouds to Planet Forming disks" (c2d). We identified and characterized all the young stellar objects (YSOs) of these two regions and modeled their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to examine whether their physical properties are consistent with values predicted from the theoretical models and with the YSO properties in the c2d survey of larger clouds. Overall, 30 YSO candidates were identified by the c2d photometric criteria, 27 in L673 and 3 in CB188. We confirm the YSO nature of 29 of them and remove a false Class III candidate in L673. We further present the discovery of two new YSO candidates, one Class 0 and another possible Class I candidate in L673, therefore bringing the total number of YSO candidates to 31. Multiple sites of star formation are present within L673, closely resembling other well-studied c2d clouds containing small groups such as B59 and L1251B, whereas CB188 seems to consist of only one isolated globule-like core. We measure a star formation efficiency (SFE) of 4.6%, which resembles the SFE of the larger c2d clouds. From the SED modeling of our YSO sample we obtain envelope masses for Class I and Flat spectrum sources of 0.01-1.0 M-circle dot. The majority of Class II YSOs show disk accretion rates from 3.3 x 10(-10) to 3 x 10(-8) M-circle dot yr(-1) and disk masses that peak at 10(-4) to 10(-3) M-circle dot. Finally, we examined the possibility of thermal fragmentation in L673 as the main star-forming process. We find that the mean density of the regions where significant YSO clustering occurs is of the order of similar to 10(5) cm(-3) using 850 mu m observations and measure a Jeans Length that is greater than the near-neighbor YSO separations by approximately a factor of 3-4. Flow-directed PCA for monitoring networks
Measurements recorded over monitoring networks often possess spatial and temporal correlation inducing redundancies in the information provided. For river water quality monitoring in particular, flow-connected sites may likely provide similar information. This paper proposes a novel approach to principal components analysis to investigate reducing dimensionality for spatiotemporal flow-connected network data in order to identify common spatiotemporal patterns. The method is illustrated using monthly observations of total oxidized nitrogen for the Trent catchment area in England. Common patterns are revealed that are hidden when the river network structure and temporal correlation are not accounted for. Such patterns provide valuable information for the design of future sampling strategies
Evaluation of Gateway and Low-Cost Traffic-Calming Treatments for Major Routes in Small Rural Communities
Many rural communities have developed around highways or major county roads; as a result, the main street through small rural communities is often part of a high-speed rural highway. Highways and county roads are characterized by high speeds outside the city limits; they then transition into a reduced speed section through the rural community. Consequently, drivers passing through the community often enter at high speeds and maintain those speeds as they travel through the community. Traffic calming in small rural communities along major roadways is common in Europe, but the U.S. does not have experience with applying traffic-calming measures outside of major urban areas.
The purpose of the project was to evaluate traffic-calming treatments on the major road through small Iowa communities using either single-measure low-cost or gateway treatments. The project was partially funded by the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB). The focus of the IHRB portion was to evaluate single-measure, low-cost, traffic-calming measures that are appropriate to major roads through small rural communities. Seven different low-cost traffic treatments were implemented and evaluated in five rural Iowa communities. The research evaluated the use of two gateway treatments in Union and Roland; five single-measure treatments (speed table, on-pavement “SLOW” markings, a driver speed feedback sign, tubular markers, and on-pavement entrance treatments) were evaluated in Gilbert, Slater, and Dexter
The Luminosities of Protostars in the Spitzer c2d and Gould Belt Legacy Clouds
Motivated by the long-standing "luminosity problem" in low-mass star
formation whereby protostars are underluminous compared to theoretical
expectations, we identify 230 protostars in 18 molecular clouds observed by two
Spitzer Space Telescope Legacy surveys of nearby star-forming regions. We
compile complete spectral energy distributions, calculate Lbol for each source,
and study the protostellar luminosity distribution. This distribution extends
over three orders of magnitude, from 0.01 Lsun - 69 Lsun, and has a mean and
median of 4.3 Lsun and 1.3 Lsun, respectively. The distributions are very
similar for Class 0 and Class I sources except for an excess of low luminosity
(Lbol < 0.5 Lsun) Class I sources compared to Class 0. 100 out of the 230
protostars (43%) lack any available data in the far-infrared and submillimeter
(70 um < wavelength < 850 um) and have Lbol underestimated by factors of 2.5 on
average, and up to factors of 8-10 in extreme cases. Correcting these
underestimates for each source individually once additional data becomes
available will likely increase both the mean and median of the sample by 35% -
40%. We discuss and compare our results to several recent theoretical studies
of protostellar luminosities and show that our new results do not invalidate
the conclusions of any of these studies. As these studies demonstrate that
there is more than one plausible accretion scenario that can match
observations, future attention is clearly needed. The better statistics

Young Stellar Objects in the Gould Belt
We present the full catalog of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) identified in the
18 molecular clouds surveyed by the Spitzer Space Telescope "cores to disks"
(c2d) and "Gould Belt" (GB) Legacy surveys. Using standard techniques developed
by the c2d project, we identify 3239 candidate YSOs in the 18 clouds, 2966 of
which survive visual inspection and form our final catalog of YSOs in the Gould
Belt. We compile extinction corrected SEDs for all 2966 YSOs and calculate and
tabulate the infrared spectral index, bolometric luminosity, and bolometric
temperature for each object. We find that 326 (11%), 210 (7%), 1248 (42%), and
1182 (40%) are classified as Class 0+I, Flat-spectrum, Class II, and Class III,
respectively, and show that the Class III sample suffers from an overall
contamination rate by background AGB stars between 25% and 90%. Adopting
standard assumptions, we derive durations of 0.40-0.78 Myr for Class 0+I YSOs
and 0.26-0.50 Myr for Flat-spectrum YSOs, where the ranges encompass
uncertainties in the adopted assumptions. Including information from
(sub)millimeter wavelengths, one-third of the Class 0+I sample is classified as
Class 0, leading to durations of 0.13-0.26 Myr (Class 0) and 0.27-0.52 Myr
(Class I). We revisit infrared color-color diagrams used in the literature to
classify YSOs and propose minor revisions to classification boundaries in these
diagrams. Finally, we show that the bolometric temperature is a poor

Invasion of sorghum in the Americas by a new sugarcane aphid (Melanaphis sacchari) superclone
In the United States (US), the sugarcane aphid (SCA) Melanaphis sacchari (Zehnter) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was introduced in the 1970s, however at that time it was only considered a pest of sugarcane. In 2013, a massive outbreak of M. sacchari occured on sorghum, resulting in significant economic damage to sorghum grown in North America including the US, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The aim of the present study was to determine if the SCA pest emergence in American sorghum resulted from the introduction of new genotypes. To this end we used microsatellite markers and COI sequencing to compare the genetic diversity of SCA populations collected in the Americas after the 2013 SCA outbreak on sorghum (during 2013–2017) to older samples collected before the pest outbreak (during 2007–2009). Our results show that the SCA outbreak in the Americas and the Caribbean observed since 2013 belong to populations exhibiting low genetic diversity and consisting of a dominant clonal lineage, MLL-F, which colonizes Sorghum spp. and sugarcane. The comparison of MLL-F specimens collected post-2013 with specimens collected in Louisiana in 2007 revealed that both populations are genetically distinct, according to COI sequencing and microsatellite data analyses. Our result suggest that MLL-F is a new invasive genotype introduced into the Americas that has spread rapidly across sorghum growing regions in the US, Mexico, Honduras and the Caribbean.
