Gas Phase Hydrolysis and Oxo-Exchange of Actinide Dioxide Cations: Elucidating Intrinsic Chemistry from Protactinium to Einsteinium.
Gas-phase bimolecular reactions of metal cations with water provide insights into intrinsic characteristics of hydrolysis. For the actinide dioxide cations, actinyl(V) AnO2 + , melding of experiment and computation provides insights into trends for hydrolysis, as well as for oxo-exchange between actinyls and water that proceeds by a hydrolysis pathway. Here this line of inquiry is further extended into the actinide series with CCSD(T) computations of potential energy surfaces, for the reaction pathway for oxo-exchange through hydrolysis of nine actinyl(V) ions, from PaO2 + to EsO2 + . The computed surfaces are in accord with previous experimental results for oxo-exchange, and furthermore predict spontaneous exchange for CmO2 + , BkO2 + , CfO2 + and EsO2 + , but not for AmO2 + . Natural Bond Order analysis of the species involved in both hydrolysis and oxo-exchange reveals an inverse correlation between the barrier to hydrolysis and the charge on the actinide centre, q(An). Based on this correlation, it can be concluded that hydrolysis, and related phenomena such as oxo-exchange, become less favourable as the charge on the metal centre decreases. The new results provide a straightforward rationalization of trends across a wide swathe of the actinide series

Activation of Water by Pentavalent Actinide Dioxide Cations: Characteristic Curium Revealed by a Reactivity Turn after Americium.
Swapping of an oxygen atom of water with that of a pentavalent actinide dioxide cation, AnO2+ also called an "actinyl", requires activation of an An-O bond. It was previously found that such oxo exchange in the gas phase occurs for the first two actinyls, PaO2+ and UO2+, but not the next two, NpO2+ and PuO2+. The An-O bond dissociation energies (BDEs) decrease from PaO2+ to PuO2+, such that the observation of a parallel decrease in the An-O bond reactivity is intriguing. To elucidate oxo exchange, we here extend experimental studies to AmO2+, americyl(V), and CmO2+, curyl(V), which were produced in remarkable abundance by electrospray ionization of Am3+ and Cm3+ solutions. Like other AnO2+, americyl(V) and curyl(V) adsorb up to four H2O molecules to form tetrahydrates AnO2(H2O)4+ with the actinide hexacoordinated by oxygen atoms. It was found that AmO2+ does not oxo-exchange, whereas CmO2+ does, establishing a "turn" to increasing the reactivity from americyl to curyl, which validates computational predictions. Because oxo exchange occurs via conversion of an actinyl(V) hydrate, AnO2(H2O)+, to an actinide(V) hydroxide, AnO(OH)2+, it reflects the propensity for actinyl(V) hydrolysis: PaO2+ hydrolyzes and oxo-exchanges most easily, despite the fact that it has the highest BDE of all AnO2+. A reexamination of the computational results for actinyl(V) oxo exchange reveals distinctive properties and chemistry of curyl(V) species, particularly CmO(OH)2+
Plans for a 10-m Submillimeter-wave Telescope at the South Pole
A 10 meter diameter submillimeter-wave telescope has been proposed for the
NSF Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Current evidence indicates that the
South Pole is the best submillimeter-wave telescope site among all existing or
proposed ground-based observatories. Proposed scientific programs place
stringent requirements on the optical quality of the telescope design. In
particular, reduction of the thermal background and offsets requires an
off-axis, unblocked aperture, and the large field of view needed for survey
observations requires shaped optics. This mix of design elements is well-suited
for large scale (square degree) mapping of line and continuum radiation from
submillimeter-wave sources at moderate spatial resolutions (4 to 60 arcsecond
beam size) and high sensitivity (milliJansky flux density levels). the
telescope will make arcminute angular scale, high frequency Cosmic Microwave
Background measurements from the best possible ground-based site, using an
aperture which is larger than is currently possible on orbital or airborne
platforms. Effective use of this telescope will require development of large
(1000 element) arrays of submillimeter detectors which are background-limited
when illuminated by antenna temperatures near 50 K.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
A Multicenter Examination and Strategic Revisions of the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale
Objective To examine the internal consistency and distribution of the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) scores to inform modification of the measure. Methods This cross-sectional study included 617 participants with a tic disorder (516 children and 101 adults), who completed an age-appropriate diagnostic interview and the YGTSS to evaluate tic symptom severity. The distributions of scores on YGTSS dimensions were evaluated for normality and skewness. For dimensions that were skewed across motor and phonic tics, a modified Delphi consensus process was used to revise selected anchor points. Results Children and adults had similar clinical characteristics, including tic symptom severity. All participants were examined together. Strong internal consistency was identified for the YGTSS Motor Tic score (α = 0.80), YGTSS Phonic Tic score (α = 0.87), and YGTSS Total Tic score (α = 0.82). The YGTSS Total Tic and Impairment scores exhibited relatively normal distributions. Several subscales and individual item scales departed from a normal distribution. Higher scores were more often used on the Motor Tic Number, Frequency, and Intensity dimensions and the Phonic Tic Frequency dimension. By contrast, lower scores were more often used on Motor Tic Complexity and Interference, and Phonic Tic Number, Intensity, Complexity, and Interference. Conclusions The YGTSS exhibits good internal consistency across children and adults. The parallel findings across Motor and Phonic Frequency, Complexity, and Interference dimensions prompted minor revisions to the anchor point description to promote use of the full range of scores in each dimension. Specific minor revisions to the YGTSS Phonic Tic Symptom Checklist were also proposed
Remarkably High Stability of Late Actinide Dioxide Cations: Extending Chemistry to Pentavalent Berkelium and Californium.
Actinyl chemistry is extended beyond Cm to BkO2+ and CfO2+ through transfer of an O atom from NO2 to BkO+ or CfO+ , establishing a surprisingly high lower limit of 73 kcal mol-1 for the dissociation energies, D[O-(BkO+ )] and D[O-(CfO+ )]. CCSD(T) computations are in accord with the observed reactions, and characterize the newly observed dioxide ions as linear pentavalent actinyls; these being the first Bk and Cf species with oxidation states above IV. Computations of actinide dioxide cations AnO2+ for An=Pa to Lr reveal an unexpected minimum for D[O-(CmO+ )]. For CmO2+ , and AnO2+ beyond EsO2+ , the most stable structure has side-on bonded η2 -(O2 ), as AnIII peroxides for An=Cm and Lr, and as AnII superoxides for An=Fm, Md, and No. It is predicted that the most stable structure of EsO2+ is linear [O=EsV =O]+ , einsteinyl, and that FmO2+ and MdO2+ , like CmO2+ , also have actinyl(V) structures as local energy minima. The results expand actinide oxidation state chemistry, the realm of the distinctive actinyl moiety, and the non-periodic character towards the end of the periodic table
Integrative behavioral ecotoxicology: bringing together fields to establish new insight to behavioral ecology, toxicology, and conservation
The fields of behavioral ecology, conservation science, and environmental toxicology individually aim to protect and manage the conservation of wildlife in response to anthropogenic stressors, including widespread anthropogenic pollution. Although great emphasis in the field of toxicology has been placed on understanding how single pollutants affect survival, a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach that includes behavioral ecology is essential to address how anthropogenic compounds are a risk for the survival of species and populations in an increasingly polluted world. We provide an integrative framework for behavioral ecotoxicology using Tinbergen\u27s four postulates (causation and mechanism, development and ontogeny, function and fitness, and evolutionary history and phylogenetic patterns). The aims of this review are: 1) to promote an integrative view and re-define the field of integrative behavioral ecotoxicology; 2) to demonstrate how studying ecotoxicology can promote behavior research; and 3) to identify areas of behavioral ecotoxicology that require further attention to promote the integration and growth of the field
Pasture Weaning Calves in a Rotational Grazing Demonstration with Beef Cows in Adams County in 2006
Weaning calves on grass is a management technique for reducing calf stress and decreasing health issues at weaning time in a beef cow/calf operation. 2006 was the third year for demonstrating this management technique at the Adams County CRP Research and Demonstration Project Farm near Corning, IA. This report highlights the 2006 grazing production data and compares it with 15 years of grazing production at that site

Two cow/calf rotational grazing systems were demonstrated annually from 1991 to 2003 on CRP land near Corning, Iowa. These systems were a 13-paddock intensive rotational grazing system and a 4-paddock rotational grazing system. In 2004, these systems were combined into one system to demonstrate weaning of calves on grass. This report highlights the 2004 production data for this grazing demonstration
