A subjective evaluation of current contact lens wetting solutions
There have been many studies made as to the importance of the use of wetting solutions in the wearing of contact lenses. It is generally concluded that proper wettability of lenses is a significantly important factor in the improvement of wearing comfort. Wettability basically refers to a physio-chemical mechanism by means of which tears spread evenly over the lenses to form a coherent film. The compositions of the individual wetting solutions contribute in varying degrees to the wettability and wearing comfort. It is the purpose of this study to subjectively evaluate the variability in degrees of comfort and desirability of a number of wetting solutions currently available
Energy Dependence of High Moments for Net-proton Distributions
High moments of multiplicity distributions of conserved quantities are
predicted to be sensitive to critical fluctuations. To understand the effect of
the complicated non-critical physics backgrounds on the proposed observable, we
have studied various moments of net-proton distributions with AMPT, Hijing,
Therminator and UrQMD models, in which no QCD critical point physics is
implemented. It is found that the centrality evolution of various moments of
net-proton distributions can be uniformly described by a superposition of
emission sources. In addition, in the absence of critical phenomena, some
moment products of net-proton distribution, related to the baryon number
susceptibilities ratio in Lattice QCD calculation, are predicted to be constant
as a function of the collision centrality. We argue that a non-monotonic
dependence of the moment products as a function collision centrality and the

Dissipative Dynamics of Matter Wave Soliton in Nonlinear Optical Lattice
Dynamics and stability of solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein
condensates (BEC), with low-dimensional (1D) conservative plus dissipative
nonlinear optical lattices are investigated. In the case of focusing media
(with attractive atomic systems) the collapse of the wave packet is arrested by
the dissipative periodic nonlinearity. The adiabatic variation of the
background scattering length leads to metastable matter-wave solitons.
When the atom feeding mechanism is used, a dissipative soliton can exist in
focusing 2D media with 1D periodic nonlinearity. In the defocusing media
(repulsive BEC case) with harmonic trap in one dimension and one dimensional
nonlinear optical lattice in other direction, the stable soliton can exist.
This prediction of variational approach is confirmed by the full numerical
simulation of 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
A four-season prospective study of muscle strain reoccurrences in a professional football club
The aim of this investigation was to characterise muscle strain reinjuries and examine their impact on playing resources in a professional football club. Muscle strains and reoccurrences were prospectively diagnosed over four seasons in first-team players (n = 46). Altogether, 188 muscle strains were diagnosed with 44 (23.4%) of these classed as reinjuries, leading to an incidence of 1.32 strain reoccurrences per 1,000 hours exposure (95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.93–1.71). The incidence of recurrent strains was higher in match-play compared with training (4.51, 95% CI, 2.30–6.72 vs 0.94, 95% CI, 0.59–1.29). Altogether, 50.0% of players sustained at least 1 reoccurrence of a muscle strain, leading to approximately 3 days lost and 0.4 matches missed per player per season. The incidence of recurrent strains was highest in centre-forwards (2.15, 95% CI, 1.06–3.24), peaked in May (3.78, 95% CI, 0.47–7.09), and mostly affected the hamstrings (38.6% of all reoccurrences). Mean layoff for nonreoccurrences and recurrences was similar: ∼7.5 days. These results provide greater insight into the extent of the problem of recurrent muscle strains in professional football
Data protection, safeguarding and the protection of children's privacy: exploring local authority guidance on parental photography at school events
Should parents be allowed to take photographs at school events? Media reports suggest that increasingly schools are answering no to this question, either prohibiting or imposing stringent restrictions upon such photography. The legal justifications for such restrictions are, however, unclear. Accordingly, in 2013 freedom of information requests were sent to local education authorities across England, Scotland and Wales, the aim being to determine what advice local education authorities provide to schools in relation to parental photography at school events, and to identify how education authorities’ understandings of the law influence the advice they offer. That research reveals that local education authorities’ understandings of the law vary significantly and that where authorities do not fully appreciate the extent of the legal obligations arising this may have significant repercussions for the children concerned
Evidence for a Peierls phase-transition in a three-dimensional multiple charge-density waves solid
The effect of dimensionality on materials properties has become strikingly
evident with the recent discovery of graphene. Charge ordering phenomena can be
induced in one dimension by periodic distortions of a material's crystal
structure, termed Peierls ordering transition. Charge-density waves can also be
induced in solids by strong Coulomb repulsion between carriers, and at the
extreme limit, Wigner predicted that crystallization itself can be induced in
an electrons gas in free space close to the absolute zero of temperature.
Similar phenomena are observed also in higher dimensions, but the microscopic
description of the corresponding phase transition is often controversial, and
remains an open field of research for fundamental physics. Here, we photoinduce
the melting of the charge ordering in a complex three-dimensional solid and
monitor the consequent charge redistribution by probing the optical response
over a broad spectral range with ultrashort laser pulses. Although the
photoinduced electronic temperature far exceeds the critical value, the
charge-density wave is preserved until the lattice is sufficiently distorted to
induce the phase transition. Combining this result with it ab initio}
electronic structure calculations, we identified the Peierls origin of multiple
