Hadronic and electromagnetic probes of hot and dense matter in a Boltzmann+Hydrodynamics model of relativistic nuclear collisions
We present recent results on bulk observables and electromagnetic probes
obtained using a hybrid approach based on the Ultrarelativistic Quantum
Molecular Dynamics transport model with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage for
the description of heavy-ion collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. After
briefly reviewing the main results for particle multiplicities, elliptic flow,
transverse momentum and rapidity spectra, we focus on photon and dilepton

Bankruptcy risk model and empirical tests
We analyze the size dependence and temporal stability of firm bankruptcy risk
in the US economy by applying Zipf scaling techniques. We focus on a single
risk factor-the debt-to-asset ratio R-in order to study the stability of the
Zipf distribution of R over time. We find that the Zipf exponent increases
during market crashes, implying that firms go bankrupt with larger values of R.
Based on the Zipf analysis, we employ Bayes's theorem and relate the
conditional probability that a bankrupt firm has a ratio R with the conditional
probability of bankruptcy for a firm with a given R value. For 2,737 bankrupt
firms, we demonstrate size dependence in assets change during the bankruptcy
proceedings. Prepetition firm assets and petition firm assets follow Zipf
distributions but with different exponents, meaning that firms with smaller
assets adjust their assets more than firms with larger assets during the
bankruptcy process. We compare bankrupt firms with nonbankrupt firms by
analyzing the assets and liabilities of two large subsets of the US economy:
2,545 Nasdaq members and 1,680 New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) members. We find
that both assets and liabilities follow a Pareto distribution. The finding is
not a trivial consequence of the Zipf scaling relationship of firm size
quantified by employees-although the market capitalization of Nasdaq stocks
follows a Pareto distribution, the same distribution does not describe NYSE
stocks. We propose a coupled Simon model that simultaneously evolves both
assets and debt with the possibility of bankruptcy, and we also consider the
possibility of firm mergers.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Ultrafast Resonant Polarization Interferometry: Towards the First Direct Detection of Vacuum Polarization
Vacuum polarization, an effect predicted nearly 70 years ago, is still yet to
be directly detected despite significant experimental effort. Previous attempts
have made use of large liquid-helium cooled electromagnets which inadvertently
generate spurious signals that mask the desired signal. We present a novel
approach for the ultra-sensitive detection of optical birefringence that can be
usefully applied to a laboratory detection of vacuum polarization. The new
technique has a predicted birefringence measurement sensitivity of in a 1 second measurement. When combined with the extreme
polarizing fields achievable in this design we predict that a vacuum
polarization signal will be seen in a measurement of just a few days in

Procathepsin D cannot autoactivate to cathepsin D at acid pH
AbstractThe amino acid sequence of the propart of bovine procathepsin D was determined at the protein level. Incubation of the isolated procathepsin D at pH 3.5–5.0 for 30–120 min leads to a 2 kDa reduction in its molecular mass, as seen by SDS-PAGE. The activation product is pseudocathepsin D and is the result of a proteolytic cleavage between LeuP26 and IleP27 in the propart. Incubation at pH 5.0 for 20 h of either procathepsin D or pseudocathepsin D results in both cases in approximately equal amounts of pseudocathepsin D and a further processed intermediate, nine amino acids shorter than pseudocathepsin D. No reaction products corresponding to cathepsin D with a mature amino terminus were observed, showing that autoproteolysis alone cannot generate the mature form found in the lysosomes
On the distribution of career longevity and the evolution of home run prowess in professional baseball
Statistical analysis is a major aspect of baseball, from player averages to
historical benchmarks and records. Much of baseball fanfare is based around
players exceeding the norm, some in a single game and others over a long
career. Career statistics serve as a metric for classifying players and
establishing their historical legacy. However, the concept of records and
benchmarks assumes that the level of competition in baseball is stationary in
time. Here we show that power-law probability density functions, a hallmark of
many complex systems that are driven by competition, govern career longevity in
baseball. We also find similar power laws in the density functions of all major
performance metrics for pitchers and batters. The use of performance-enhancing
drugs has a dark history, emerging as a problem for both amateur and
professional sports. We find statistical evidence consistent with
performance-enhancing drugs in the analysis of home runs hit by players in the
last 25 years. This is corroborated by the findings of the Mitchell Report [1],
a two-year investigation into the use of illegal steroids in major league
baseball, which recently revealed that over 5 percent of major league baseball
players tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in an anonymous 2003

A four-season prospective study of muscle strain reoccurrences in a professional football club
The aim of this investigation was to characterise muscle strain reinjuries and examine their impact on playing resources in a professional football club. Muscle strains and reoccurrences were prospectively diagnosed over four seasons in first-team players (n = 46). Altogether, 188 muscle strains were diagnosed with 44 (23.4%) of these classed as reinjuries, leading to an incidence of 1.32 strain reoccurrences per 1,000 hours exposure (95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.93–1.71). The incidence of recurrent strains was higher in match-play compared with training (4.51, 95% CI, 2.30–6.72 vs 0.94, 95% CI, 0.59–1.29). Altogether, 50.0% of players sustained at least 1 reoccurrence of a muscle strain, leading to approximately 3 days lost and 0.4 matches missed per player per season. The incidence of recurrent strains was highest in centre-forwards (2.15, 95% CI, 1.06–3.24), peaked in May (3.78, 95% CI, 0.47–7.09), and mostly affected the hamstrings (38.6% of all reoccurrences). Mean layoff for nonreoccurrences and recurrences was similar: ∼7.5 days. These results provide greater insight into the extent of the problem of recurrent muscle strains in professional football
On the Role of Global Warming on the Statistics of Record-Breaking Temperatures
We theoretically study long-term trends in the statistics of record-breaking
daily temperatures and validate these predictions using Monte Carlo simulations
and data from the city of Philadelphia, for which 126 years of daily
temperature data is available. Using extreme statistics, we derive the number
and the magnitude of record temperature events, based on the observed Gaussian
daily temperatures distribution in Philadelphia, as a function of the number of
elapsed years from the start of the data. We further consider the case of
global warming, where the mean temperature systematically increases with time.
We argue that the current warming rate is insufficient to measurably influence
the frequency of record temperature events over the time range of the
observations, a conclusion that is supported by numerical simulations and the

Data protection, safeguarding and the protection of children's privacy: exploring local authority guidance on parental photography at school events
Should parents be allowed to take photographs at school events? Media reports suggest that increasingly schools are answering no to this question, either prohibiting or imposing stringent restrictions upon such photography. The legal justifications for such restrictions are, however, unclear. Accordingly, in 2013 freedom of information requests were sent to local education authorities across England, Scotland and Wales, the aim being to determine what advice local education authorities provide to schools in relation to parental photography at school events, and to identify how education authorities’ understandings of the law influence the advice they offer. That research reveals that local education authorities’ understandings of the law vary significantly and that where authorities do not fully appreciate the extent of the legal obligations arising this may have significant repercussions for the children concerned
Distinct nature of static and dynamic magnetic stripes in cuprate superconductors
We present detailed neutron scattering studies of the static and dynamic
stripes in an optimally doped high-temperature superconductor,
LaCuO. We find that the dynamic stripes do not disperse towards the
static stripes in the limit of vanishing energy transfer. We conclude that the
dynamic stripes observed in neutron scattering experiments are not the
Goldstone modes associated with the broken symmetry of the simultaneously
observed static stripes, but rather that the signals originate from different
domains in the sample. These domains may be related by structural twinning, or
may be entirely different phases, where the static stripes in one phase are
pinned versions of the dynamic stripes in the other. Our results explain
earlier observations of unusual dispersions in underdoped
LaSrCuO () and LaBaCuO ().
Our findings are relevant for all compounds exhibiting magnetic stripes, and
may thus be a vital part in unveiling the nature of high temperature
superconductivity
