    Orbital-selective Mott transitions in two-band Hubbard models

    The anisotropic two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated at low temperatures using high-precision quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We demonstrate that two distinct orbital-selective Mott transitions (OSMTs) occur for a bandwidth ratio of 2 even without spin-flip contributions to the Hund exchange, and we quantify numerical errors in earlier QMC data which had obscured the second transition. The limit of small inter-orbital coupling is introduced via a new generalized Hamiltonian and studied using QMC and Potthoff's self-energy functional method, yielding insight into the nature of the OSMTs and the non-Fermi-liquid OSM phase and opening the possibility for a new quantum-critical point.Comment: 2 pages, 4 figures, presented at ICM2006 and accepted for JMM

    Orbital-selective Mott Transitions in a Doped Two-band Hubbard Model

    We extend previous studies on orbital-selective Mott transitions in the paramagnetic state of the half-filled degenerate two-band Hubbard model to the general doped case, using a high-precision quantum Monte Carlo dynamical mean-field theory solver. For sufficiently strong interactions, orbital-selective Mott transitions as a function of total band filling are clearly visible in the band-specific fillings, quasiparticle weights, double occupancies, and spectra. The results are contrasted with those of single-band models for similar correlation strengths.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure

    The effect of geometry on three-dimensional tissue growth

    Tissue formation is determined by uncountable biochemical signals between cells; in addition, physical parameters have been shown to exhibit significant effects on the level of the single cell. Beyond the cell, however, there is still no quantitative understanding of how geometry affects tissue growth, which is of much significance for bone healing and tissue engineering. In this paper, it is shown that the local growth rate of tissue formed by osteoblasts is strongly influenced by the geometrical features of channels in an artificial three-dimensional matrix. Curvature-driven effects and mechanical forces within the tissue may explain the growth patterns as demonstrated by numerical simulation and confocal laser scanning microscopy. This implies that cells within the tissue surface are able to sense and react to radii of curvature much larger than the size of the cells themselves. This has important implications towards the understanding of bone remodelling and defect healing as well as towards scaffold design in bone tissue engineering

    Early detection of cervical cancer in western Kenya : determinants of healthcare providers performing a gynaecological examination for abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding

    Background In western Kenya, women often present with late-stage cervical cancer despite prior contact with the health care system. The aim of this study was to predict primary health care providers' behaviour in examining women who present with abnormal discharge or bleeding. Methods This was a cross-sectional survey using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). A sample of primary health care practitioners in western Kenya completed a 59-item questionnaire. Structural equation modelling was used to identify the determinants of providers' intention to perform a gynaecological examination. Bivariate analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between the external variables and intention. Results Direct measures of subjective norms (DMSN), direct measures of perceived behavioural control (DMPBC), and indirect measures of attitude predicted the intention to examine patients. Negative attitudes toward examining women had a suppressor effect on the prediction of health workers' intentions. However, the predictors of intention with the highest coefficients were the external variables being a nurse (beta = 0.32) as opposed to a clinical officer and workload of attending less than 50 patients per day (beta = 0.56). In bivariate analysis with intention to perform a gynaecological examination, there was no evidence that working experience, being female, having a lower workload, or being a private practitioner were associated with a higher intention to conduct vaginal examinations. Clinical officers and nurses were equally likely to examine women. Conclusions The TPB is a suitable theoretical basis to predict the intention to perform a gynaecological examination. Overall, the model predicted 47% of the variation in health care providers' intention to examine women who present with recurrent vaginal bleeding or discharge. Direct subjective norms (health provider's conformity with what their colleagues do or expect them to do), PBC (providers need to feel competent and confident in performing examinations in women), and negative attitudes toward conducting vaginal examination accounted for the most variance. External variables in this study also contributed to the overall variance. As the model in this study could not explain 53% of the variance, investigating other external variables that influence the intention to examine women should be undertaken

    Quantum critical point in a periodic Anderson model

    We investigate the symmetric periodic Anderson model ͑PAM͒ on a three-dimensional cubic lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and hybridization matrix elements. Using Gutzwiller's variational method and the Hubbard-III approximation ͑which corresponds to an exact solution of the appropriate Falicov-Kimball model in infinite dimensions͒ we demonstrate the existence of a quantum critical point at zero temperature. Below a critical value V c of the hybridization ͑or above a critical interaction U c ) the system is an insulator in Gutzwiller's and a semimetal in Hubbard's approach, whereas above V c ͑below U c ) it behaves like a metal in both approximations. These predictions are compared with the density of states of the d and f bands calculated from quantum Monte Carlo and numerical renormalization group calculations. Our conclusion is that the half-filled symmetric PAM contains a metal-semimetal transition, not a metal-insulator transition as has been suggested previously

    A 22-single nucleotide polymorphism Alzheimer's disease risk score correlates with family history, onset age, and cerebrospinal fluid Aβ42

    Introduction: The ability to identify individuals at increased genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) may streamline biomarker and drug trials and aid clinical and personal decision making. Methods: We evaluated the discriminative ability of a genetic risk score (GRS) covering 22 published genetic risk loci forADin 1162 Flanders-BelgianADpatients and 1019 controls and assessed correlations with family history, onset age, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (A beta(1-42), T-Tau, P-Tau(181P)). Results: A GRS including all single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and age-specific APOE epsilon 4 weights reached area under the curve (AUC) 0.70, which increased to AUC 0.78 for patients with familial predisposition. Risk of AD increased with GRS (odds ratio, 2.32 (95% confidence interval 2.08-2.58 per unit; P < 1.0e(-15)). Onset age and CSF Ab1-42 decreased with increasing GRS (P-onset_age 5 9.0e(-11); P-A beta = 8.9e(-7)). Discussion: The discriminative ability of this 22-SNP GRS is still limited, but these data illustrate that incorporation of age-specific weights improves discriminative ability. GRS-phenotype correlations highlight the feasibility of identifying individuals at highest susceptibility. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc. on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association

    Frailty and functional outcomes after open and endovascular procedures for patients with peripheral arterial disease:A systematic review

    Background: Frailty has been associated with postoperative complications and mortality across surgical specialties, including vascular surgery. However, the influence of frailty on postoperative functional outcomes is unclear. We sought to determine the influence of frailty on functional outcomes after open or endovascular vascular procedures in patients with peripheral arterial disease. Methods: This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. Eligible articles were identified through database searches of Pubmed and EMBASE in April 2017. Studies reporting on frailty and functional outcomes after vascular interventions for peripheral artery disease (PAD) were included. Outcomes of interest were dependency in activities of daily living (ADL), dependent mobility, discharge destination, disability-free survival, and quality of life. Individual studies were assessed for quality and risk of bias using the Quality in Prognosis Studies tool. Results: Eight studies met the eligibility criteria and were included. The risk of bias was low in two studies, intermediate in three studies, and high in three studies. Methods for frailty assessment were different for each study. Frailty was a predictor for discharge to a higher level of care, dependent mobility, and dependency in ADL after vascular procedures for PAD. Both frailty models and individual frailty characteristics seem to be associated with these adverse functional outcomes. Conclusions: Despite a limited amount of literature and an overall intermediate quality of the included studies, this systematic review shows an association between frailty and adverse functional outcomes after peripheral arterial procedures for PAD, including discharge to a care facility, dependent mobility, and a decline in ADL functioning
