Pilot-scale spiral wound membrane assessment for THM precursor rejection from upland waters

The outcomes of a pilot-scale study of the rejection of trihalomethanes (THMs) precursors by commercial ultrafiltration/nanofiltration (UF/NF) spiral-wound membrane elements are presented based on a single surface water source in Scotland. The study revealed the expected trend of increased flux and permeability with increasing pore size for the UF membranes; the NF membranes provided similar fluxes despite the lower nominal pore size. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) passage decreased with decreasing molecular weight cut-off, with a less than one-third the passage recorded for the NF membranes than for the UF ones. The yield (weight % total THMs per DOC) varied between 2.5% and 8% across all membranes tested, in reasonable agreement with the literature, with the aromatic polyamide membrane providing both the lowest yield and lowest DOC passage. The proportion of the hydrophobic (HPO) fraction removed was found to increase with decreasing membrane selectivity (increasing pore size), and THM generation correlated closely (R2 = 0.98) with the permeate HPO fractional concentration

An OpenURL resolver (SFX) in action: the answer to a librarian's prayer or a burden for technical services?

This paper will reflect on the experience of installing, configuring and maintaining the Ex Libris' OpenURL resolver - SFX. Particular attention will be paid to the extraordinary usefulness of this tool for gluing together the components of the resource discovery process. This paper will discuss the level of staffing required to maintain the resolver service, the skill sets required by those staff and the place of an OpenURL resolver within the extended ILMS. Finally the authors will speculate on the future of such a service within the portfolio of online services offered by a university library

GAPS IN THE HEISENBERG-ISING MODEL

We report on the closing of gaps in the ground state of the critical Heisenberg-Ising chain at momentum $\pi$. For half-filling, the gap closes at special values of the anisotropy $\Delta= \cos(\pi/Q)$, $Q$ integer. We explain this behavior with the help of the Bethe Ansatz and show that the gap scales as a power of the system size with variable exponent depending on $\Delta$. We use a finite-size analysis to calculate this exponent in the critical region, supplemented by perturbation theory at $\Delta\sim 0$. For rational $1/r$ fillings, the gap is shown to be closed for {\em all} values of $\Delta$ and the corresponding perturbation expansion in $\Delta$ shows a remarkable cancellation of various diagrams.Comment: 12 RevTeX pages + 4 figures upon reques
