International Social Work in Practice: A Case Study from Northern Uganda

International social work is gaining recognition as a distinct field of study and practice, and in this process, its meaning continues to be delineated. In this paper, I describe a series of experiences during a summer field practicum coordinating the final phase of a year-long qualitative research study on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Lira, northern Uganda. While not a conclusive statement on the nature of all international social work, this paper presents personal experiences to illustrate how the psychosocial skills, practices, and theory of the social work profession can lend themselves well to the emotional and managerial demands of international work in a post-conflict, developing country context

Notas e apontamentos acerca das crônicas de Almeida Nogueira das turmas acadêmicas de 1852-1856 e 1858-1862

This paper presents the chronicles of the 1852-1856 and 1858-1862 classes, written by Almeida Nogueira and published on the Correio Paulistano in 1906. These chronicles were not included in his work A Academia de São Paulo: tradições e reminiscências (1907-1912, 9 volumes) and, for this reason, remain unpublished. Notes and remarks have been added for a better understanding of academic life at that time.Este artigo apresenta as crônicas das turmas acadêmicas de 1852-1856 e 1858-1862, redigidas por Almeida Nogueira e publicadas no Correio Paulistano em 1906. Tais crônicas não foram incluídas em sua obra A Academia de São Paulo: tradições e reminiscências (1907-1912, 9 volumes) e, por isso, ainda permanecem inéditas. Evaluating the effectiveness of e-learning for soft skills training

Thanks to the development of Internet technologies, e-learning platforms became a widespread tool to provide training on both hard and soft skills in a cost-effective way. However, the debate is still ongoing about the efficiency of soft skill e-learning. The goal of this dissertation is thus to evaluate the efficiency of e-learning for soft skills training by studying the case of a French regional bank’s e-learning system. To do this, I analysed the literature on learning, e-learning and training evaluation and decided to base the study on the Kirkpatrick model (1996). Nine in-depth, semi-structured interviews were carried out to give a detailed insight of employees’ experience of the platform. The data revealed that the perceived usefulness of the system among employees was quite low. Then, they suggested that the platform was useful for reviewing already approached topics and building on existing skills but not for learning new competences from scratch. However, soft skill e-learning seems to have created changes in users’ behaviour even if they are sometimes subtle. Finally, the cost-effectiveness of the platform seems to be threaten by the low level of users’ connexions. Thus the data enabled to highlight main factors explaining employees’ reluctance: the impossibility to isolate from the daily activity, the lack of guidance on the platform and the lack of time
