    The development of silica hydride stationary phases for high-performance liquid chromatography from conception to commercialization

    The development of a stationary phase material for high-performance liquid chromatography based on a surface of silica hydride as opposed to silanols on ordinary silica is discussed including synthetic approaches, characterization, and applications. There are several synthetic approaches available to create a silica hydride surface. Modification of the Si–H moiety on the silica surface can be accomplished through the use of a hydrosilation reaction. Both the intermediate silica hydride and the material modified with an organic moiety can be characterized by a number of spectroscopic as well as a variety of other methods. Further insights into the retention mechanism are provided through chromatographic measurements. The ultimate utility of any chromatographic stationary phase material is determined by its success in solving challenging analytical problems. A broad range of applications is reviewed to illustrate the versatility and usefulness of silica hydride-based stationary phases

    Genome-wide association analysis of eosinophilic esophagitis provides insight into the tissue specificity of this allergic disease

    Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with allergic hypersensitivity to food. We interrogated >1.5 million genetic variants in European EoE cases and subsequently in a multi-site cohort with local and out-of-study control subjects. In addition to replication of the 5q22 locus (meta-analysis p = 1.9×10−16), we identified association at 2p23 (encoding CAPN14, p = 2.5×10−10). CAPN14 was specifically expressed in the esophagus, dynamically upregulated as a function of disease activity and genetic haplotype and after exposure of epithelial cells to IL-13, and located in an epigenetic hotspot modified by IL-13. There was enriched esophageal expression for the genes neighboring the top 208 EoE sequence variants. Multiple allergic sensitization loci were associated with EoE susceptibility (4.8×10−2 < p < 5.1×10−11). We propose a model that elucidates the tissue specific nature of EoE that involves the interplay of allergic sensitization with an EoE-specific, IL-13–inducible esophageal response involving CAPN14

    This review describes the development, special features and applications of silica hydride-based stationary phases for HPLC. The unique surface of this material is in contrast to ordinary, standard silica, which is the material most frequently used in modern HPLC stationary phases. The standard silica surface contains mainly silanol (Si-OH) groups, while the silica hydride surface is instead composed of silicon-hydrogen groups, which is much more stable, less reactive and delivers different chromatographic and chemical characteristics. Other aspects of this material are described for each of the different bonded moieties available commercially. Some applications for each of these column types are also presented as well as a generic model for method development on silica hydride-based stationary phases

    Production functions, isoquants, isoclines and economic optima in corn fertilization for experiments with two and three variable nutrients

    This study deals with the basic agronomic and economic relationships of fertilizer use. It is the second in a series of methodological studies designed to predict production surfaces, isoquants, isoclines, marginal products and marginal replacement rates between nutrients when two or more nutrients are used in promoting increased crop yields. These quantities, which are fundamental in obtaining a basic science knowledge of fertilizer-crop relationships, are then used to predict optimum levels of fertilization and optimum ratios of nutrients with profit maximization as the criterion of selection. While the major objectives of the study are of a methodological nature, illustrations are included to show how the basic relationships and principles can be adapted to simple forms for farmer and educational uses. The logical foundations for research of the type reported in this bulletin are reported elsewhere.2 The production functions and economic optima predicted in this study are for corn on three types of soils with two and three nutrients variable in quantity.</p
