Absolute rate of the reaction of Cl(p-2) with molecular hydrogen from 200 - 500 K
Rate constants for the reaction of atomic chlorine with hydrogen are measured from 200 - 500 K using the flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence technique. The results are compared with previous work and are discussed with particular reference to the equilibrium constant for the reaction and to relative rate data for chlorine atom reactions. Theoretical calculations, using the BEBO method with tunneling, give excellent agreement with experiment
ESTIMATING THE COMMUNITY-LEVEL IMPACTS OF ATTRACTING NEW BUSINESSES: THE IMPLICATIONS OF LOCAL LABOR MARKET ADJUSTMENTS
The purpose of this report is to estimate short-and long-run labor market adjustments associated with employment change for South Carolina counties. An appreciation of the source of employees for new jobs enables community leaders to better select the appropriate level of industrial incentives and to better plan for changes in demand for public goods and services. We provide an overview of the components of a local labor force and the implications of component change on local income and expenditures for public goods and services. Then we present the results of the Clemson University Community Policy Analysis (CPAN) Model for county labor markets. This model estimates the allocation of new jobs in a county among the components of a county's labor force. Third, we summarize the concepts of "job chains" and "leakages" and discuss the relationship between these concepts and community-level impacts. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of how insights into labor market adjustments may be used to improve public policy in community planning and industrial development.Labor and Human Capital,
Optimum imaging and diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea
Imaging is an important component in the investigation of unilateral watery rhinorrhoea suspicious of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Whilst the demonstration of the presence of beta 2 transferrin confirms that CSF is present it may prove difficult to demonstrate the exact site of origin. Fine detail coronal computed tomography (CT) with sections of 1-2 mm thickness through the anterior skull base may show small dehiscences and fractures. The commonest site for congenital dehiscences is the cribriform niche adjacent to the vertical attachment of the middle turbinate anteriorly and the superior and lateral walls of the sphenoid posteriorly. In the presence of frequent or constant CSF rhinorrhoea a CT cisternogram can be helpful in defining the exact site of the leak. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is reserved for defining the nature of soft tissue Le. inflammatory tissue, meningoencephalocele or tumour. Finally, per-operative intrathecal fluorescein is helpful when imaging does not prove positive. A management algorithm for CSF rhinorrhoea is presented
Acquired Resistance to KRAS (G12C) Inhibition in Cancer
BACKGROUND: Clinical trials of the KRAS inhibitors adagrasib and sotorasib have shown promising activity in cancers harboring KRAS glycine-to-cysteine amino acid substitutions at codon 12 (KRAS(G12C)). The mechanisms of acquired resistance to these therapies are currently unknown.
METHODS: Among patients with KRAS(G12C) -mutant cancers treated with adagrasib monotherapy, we performed genomic and histologic analyses that compared pretreatment samples with those obtained after the development of resistance. Cell-based experiments were conducted to study mutations that confer resistance to KRAS(G12C) inhibitors.
RESULTS: A total of 38 patients were included in this study: 27 with non-small-cell lung cancer, 10 with colorectal cancer, and 1 with appendiceal cancer. Putative mechanisms of resistance to adagrasib were detected in 17 patients (45% of the cohort), of whom 7 (18% of the cohort) had multiple coincident mechanisms. Acquired KRAS alterations included G12D/R/V/W, G13D, Q61H, R68S, H95D/Q/R, Y96C, and high-level amplification of the KRAS(G12C) allele. Acquired bypass mechanisms of resistance included MET amplification; activating mutations in NRAS, BRAF, MAP2K1, and RET; oncogenic fusions involving ALK, RET, BRAF, RAF1, and FGFR3; and loss-of-function mutations in NF1 and PTEN. In two of nine patients with lung adenocarcinoma for whom paired tissue-biopsy samples were available, histologic transformation to squamous-cell carcinoma was observed without identification of any other resistance mechanisms. Using an in vitro deep mutational scanning screen, we systematically defined the landscape of KRAS mutations that confer resistance to KRAS(G12C) inhibitors.
CONCLUSIONS: Diverse genomic and histologic mechanisms impart resistance to covalent KRAS(G12C) inhibitors, and new therapeutic strategies are required to delay and overcome this drug resistance in patients with cancer. Picture This! Reflecting on the Use of Posters as Expressions of PhD Research Projects
The presentation of posters at scientific conferences to visually represent research projects is a widespread international practice. The main purpose of this paper is to offer reflections relating to posters as visual representations of research studies conducted by PhD candidates. As the basis for our reflections, we consider the main purposes and intended learning outcomes linked to posters and reflect on some of the design and assessment issues associated with the multi-faceted purposes of posters in contexts such as postgraduate research conferences. Notably, the paper includes a set of illustrative vignettes written by a group of PhD students from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Manchester who were required to design and exhibit posters at an annually held postgraduate research conference. Sensation seeking and impulsivity as predictors of aggression in adolescents
La adolescencia es una etapa, en la que la impulsividad y la búsqueda de sensaciones se presentan como dos factores que confluyen con un amplio abanico de cambios, inherentes al desarrollo adolescente. La impulsividad y la búsqueda de sensaciones han sido frecuentemente vinculadas a comportamientos de riesgo en adolescentes, y especialmente afines a la agresividad. Con el presente trabajo se pretende analizar el valor predictivo de variables relacionadas con la búsqueda de sensaciones y la impulsividad, en relación a la adopción de diferentes formas de agresión (agresión física, agresión verbal, ira y hostilidad), en adolescentes. Para ello, se seleccionó una muestra de 822 alumnos de secundaria, y se aplicaron la Escala de Búsqueda de Sensaciones, la Escala de Impulsividad Estado (EIE) y el Cuestionario de Agresión (AQ). Los resultados obtenidos, evidencian la existencia de correlaciones positivas entre los factores de búsqueda de sensaciones e impulsividad, con respecto a las modalidades de agresión analizadas. Por otro lado, los análisis de regresión múltiple evidencian el valor predictivo de los factores de búsqueda de sensaciones e impulsividad, para las diferentes manifestaciones de la conducta agresiva. Más concretamente, destaca la presencia de los componentes de la impulsividad en los modelos explicativos de la agresión física y verbal, y el factor Atencional como el mejor predictor de la ira y la hostilidad
Suplementacija kreatinom mijenja hormonalnu reakciju organizma na vježbe s opterećenjem
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of short-term creatine supplementation on hormonal responses to resistance exercise. 27 trained men were randomly divided into a creatine supplementation group [the CR group (n=15), taking 4×5 g creatine monohydrate/day] or a placebo supplementation group [the PL group (n=12), taking 4×7.5 g maltodextrin/day]. A double-blind research design was employed for a 7-day supplementation period. After this period, the participants performed exercise testing. Blood tests occurred on day 1 prior to supplementation loading (1Pre) and after this period [on the exercise testing day: pre-exercise (Pre), immediately post-exercise (IP), and 15 (15P) and 30 (30P) minutes post-exercise] for the measurement of the serum growth hormone and testosterone concentrations. Significant differences in the number of repetitions and volume were seen with CR (7.2±1.3 repetitions, 1560±386 kg) compared to PL (5.6±2 repetitions, 1089±341 kg) at set 5 of the exercise protocol (p=.01). Serum growth hormone and testosterone were significantly higher at 15P in CR (6.1±1.8 ng/ml, 70.1±19 pmol/L) compared to PL (4.1±1.7 ng/ml, 44.8±16 pmol/L) [(p=.02), (p=.01)]. The enhanced exercise performance resulted in a significantly greater increase in both the growth hormone and testosterone concentrations, indicating an augmented anabolic hormone response to creatine supplementation.Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je utvrditi utjecaj kratkotrajne suplementacije kreatinom na hormonsku reakciju organizma kod vježbi s opterećenjem. 27 treniranih muškaraca nasumično su podijeljeni u grupu koja je uzimala kreatin [CR skupina (n=15), 4×5 g kreatin monohidrata po danu] ili u placebo skupinu [PL grupa (n=12), 4×7.5 g maltodextrina po danu]. Dvostruka anonimna metoda istraživanja bila je korištena pri realizaciji sedmodnevnog suplementacijskog perioda. Nakon perioda suplementacije, provedena su finalna testiranja. Testiranje krvnih uzoraka provedeno je prvog dana eksperimenta neposredno prije suplementacije (1Pre) i nakon eksperimentalnog perioda [na dan finalnih testiranja: prije izvođenja vježbi s opterećenjem (Pre), neposredno nakon izvođenja vježbi s opterećenjem (IP), te 15 (15P) i 30 (30P) minuta nakon izvođenja vježbi s opterećenjem] za mjerenje koncentracije seruma hormona rasta i testosterona. Statistički značajne razlike u broju ponavljanja i veličini ukupnog opterećenja utvrđene su kod CR skupine (7.2±1.3 ponavljanja, 1560±386 kg) u usporedbi s PL skupinom (5.6±2 ponavljanja, 1089±341 kg) kod 5. serije provedenog protokola vježbanja (p=.01). Serumi hormona rasta i testosterona bili su statistički značajno veći u 15P kod CR skupine (6.1±1.8 ng/ml, 70.1±19 pmol/L) u usporedbi s PL skupinom (4.1±1.7 ng/ml, 44.8±16 pmol/L) [(p=.02), (p=.01)]. Bolji rezultati u finalnom testiranju kod CR skupine rezultirali su statistički značajno većom koncentracijom hormona rasta i testosterona u odnosu na PL skupinu, što pokazuje povećanu reakciju anaboličkih hormona na suplementaciju kreatinom
