The definitive version was published in Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology 180 (2011): 112-114, doi:10.1016/j.molbiopara.2011.07.008.The Giardia lamblia genome consists of 12 Mb divided among 5 chromosomes ranging in size from approximately 1 to 4 Mb. The assembled contigs of the genotype A1 isolate, WB, were previously mapped along the 5 chromosomes on the basis of hybridization of plasmid clones representing the contigs to chromosomes separated by PFGE. In the current report, we have generated an MluI optical map of the WB genome to improve the accuracy of the physical map. This has allowed us to correct several assembly errors and to better define the extent of the subtelomeric regions that are not included in the genome assembly. This work was funded in part by the Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health, jointly funded by the National Science Foundation (OCE-0430724) and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (P50 ES012742)

    The twelve dimensional super (2+2)-brane

We discuss supersymmetry in twelve dimensions and present a covariant supersymmetric action for a brane with worldsheet signature (2,2), called a super (2+2)-brane, propagating in the osp(64,12) superspace. This superspace is explicitly constructed, and is trivial in the sense that the spinorial part is a trivial bundle over spacetime, unlike the twisted superspace of usual Poincare supersymmetry. For consistency, it is necessary to take a projection of the superspace. This is the same as the projection required for worldvolume supersymmetry. Upon compactification of this superspace, a torsion is naturally introduced and we produce the membrane and type IIB string actions in 11 and 10 dimensional Minkowski spacetimes. In addition, the compactification of the twelve dimensional supersymmetry algebra produces the correct algebras for these theories, including central charges. These considerations thus give the type IIB string and M-theory a single twelve dimensional origin.Comment: 32 pages LaTex, no figures, minor comments and address(!) adde

Activated mesothelial cells produce heparin-binding growth factors: implications for tumour metastases

Curative surgery for gastrointestinal malignancy is commonly thwarted by local tumour recurrence. The heparin-binding growth factors, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) and vascular epidermal growth factor (VEGF) are all implicated in the metastatic process, but whether or not these essential growth factors are produced by the activated peritoneum is unknown. This study reveals that peritoneal mesothelial cells constitutively express mRNA for bFGF, HB-EGF and two VEGF spliced variants, VEGF121and VEGF165. Mesothelial activation with interleukin (IL)-1b or tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a produced an up-regulation of mRNA for HB-EGF and VEGF, but not bFGF expression. IL-6 failed to stimulate growth factor expression, whereas IL-2 produced a marked suppression in HB-EGF and bFGF, but not VEGF expression. Mesothelial cells were shown to predominantly express mRNA for the intermediate affinity (bgc) IL-2 receptor. Cytokine-induced growth factor up-regulation was confirmed at the protein level using Western blotting of mesothelial cell lysates for HB-EGF and culture supernatant enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for VEGF. The production of these growth factors by human mesothelial cells may play a significant role in post-operative peritoneal tumour recurrence. Their common heparin-binding property offers a potential therapeutic target for manipulating the growth factor environment of the human peritoneum. Β© 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

Title: Implementing the National Accelerated Literacy Program in Northern Territory: Findings of survey, focus groups and observations of teaching practice

Abstract This is the first of two papers on outcomes of the evaluation of the National Accelerated Literacy Program (NALP) in the NT. NALP was an attempt to rapidly improve literacy outcomes for Indigenous students in 100 schools in the Northern Territory by implementing a method of teaching known as Accelerated Literacy (AL). The authors present findings of the evaluation of the implementation of NALP (2006)(2007)(2008), focusing on the degree to which the implementation program was effective in changing teaching practices according to the requirements of the Accelerated Literacy method. The evaluators conducted a survey of practitioners, focus group interviews with teachers and coordinators in schools and systematically observed AL teaching in 68 classrooms in 36 schools. It confirms that within four years, NALP had achieved the implementation of AL in a large number of NT schools such that teachers and principals in close to the target number of schools had been engaged in the process of change. However, notwithstanding this progress in implementation of the program in NT schools, the results of this evaluation suggest that by early 2008 there had been uneven success in changing teacher practice to achieve the levels of teaching of AL to desired standards in classrooms. The evaluation questions whether the policy commitments were always insufficient to support and sustain the implementation of AL to appropriate levels in terms of quality and completeness of systemic support
