    Faculty attitudes and knowledge regarding college students with disabilities

    The presence of students with disabilities (SWD) at colleges and universities in the United States has increased significantly in recent years, yet many of these students continue to encounter significant barriers that can have a profound impact on their college experience. Salient factors that contribute to the challenging climate for SWD include lack of faculty knowledge and awareness of the issues that face these students, as well as negative attitudes toward disability and the provision of accommodations. The current study examined faculty attitudes and knowledge regarding SWD via an online, anonymous survey (n = 123). Results suggest that although faculty have generally positive attitudes toward SWD, they are more likely to hold negative attitudes toward students with mental health disabilities and learning disabilities than toward students with physical disabilities. This study also identified several misconceptions and gaps in knowledge about offices of disability services and provision of accommodations that could negatively impact students. Faculty respondents also expressed strong interest in professional development opportunities related to SWD. Implications of these findings and future directions are also addressed

    Incorporating Digital Learning Tools in Conjunction with Air Traffic Control Simulation

    Learning and applying complex information at a fast rate can be challenging for students within an air traffic control - training program. Incorporating digital learning tools into an air traffic control training programs may increase student learning and success rates. Swivl is a digital learning capture tool designed to enhance student learning by allowing students to refer back to their individual classroom lab training session videos via an online portal. Embry Riddle’s air traffic program has started using Swivl in two separate ATC courses in order to determine if it is a viable solution to increase learning. During our research, we have come to the conclusion that Swivl is most useful in the air traffic control tower simulator, and has shown to be an effective learning tool thus far from the teacher’s perspective. Additional student feedback and analysis is forthcoming . Swivl has the potential to be an effective tool in ATC training and may enhance learning by allowing students to sharpen skills that are necessary to advance in the field of air traffic control. The air traffic control - training academy (used to train air traffic controllers hired by the federal government) has a high failure rate.     Dislodged Endovascular Heat-Induced Thrombus Resulting in Pulmonary Embolus Following Post-Operative Ultrasound Compression

    Introduction: Venous insufficiency and consequent varicose veins are common problems faced by many patients. Fortunately, there are many treatment options available including a minimally invasive method known as radiofrequency ablation (RFA). RFA is not without complications; amongst those are endovascular heat induced thrombosis (EHIT). This rare complication is typically managed conservatively; however, in rare occasions, the thrombus can detach and embolize causing further issues for patients. Case Description: A 48-year-old male underwent an uneventful RFA procedure for a CEAP 4a venous insufficiency. On the post-operative ultrasound venous duplex evaluation, the patient was found to have EHIT type 2 in the right greater saphenous vein extending to the sapheno-femoral junction. During compression and release of the ultrasound probe by the ultrasound technician, the thrombus detached from the venous wall and embolized to a right lung subsegmental branch. Discussion: This case report focuses on the possibility of secondary sequela that may arise from EHIT affecting other organ systems from the RFA procedure, the classification system of EHIT, and management options

    Utilizing Guided Simulation in Conjunction with Digital Learning Tools in Air Traffic Control Training

    For students in an air traffic control discipline, simulated training time is limited to in - class time and is divided among the entire class. Students are required to advance and obtain knowledge, skills, and abilities in the lab because there is almost no way to practice at home. All students learn at different rates as well as through different learning styles. Swivl is a digital learning/capture tool designed to enhance student learning by allowing students to refer back to the individual classroom lab training session via an online portal. Swivl is currently being used in two ATC Lab courses. There are two technological deficiencies that have arisen: (1) Swivl (in the Terminal Radar Approach Control and En - Route Radar environments) lacks the ability to record what is being said over the frequencies. (2) Swivl does not have the ability to focus on the radar scope targets. As a result, the students’ captures have a deficiency in visual clarity. However, the nature of the tower simulator does allow for better visual acuity and effective communication exchange within the Swivl capture

    RELAX Alternatives to Anger: Examining the Experiences of Latino Adults in an Anger Management Program

    Anger Management Education (AME) is a growing genre of Family Life Education and Extension that shows promise in helping individuals manage the frequency and intensity of their anger. The majority of research using AME, however, has primarily examined outcomes from high-risk populations such as incarcerated populations, delinquent youth, and couples in relationship duress. This study examines the perceived benefits and experiences of 36 Latino adult participants in the RELAX: Alternatives to Anger family life education program. Five themes emerged using data from five focus group interviews depicting positive evaluative findings among participants, including (1) anger management strategies, (2) understanding anger, (3) improved relationships, (4) social support, and (5) cultural influence of anger. Implications for developing and implementing AME programming for Latino audiences are described

    Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Operations into the National Airspace System

    Commercial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are expected to dominate the National Airspace System (NAS) in the years to come. One particular barrier preventing integration of UAS into the NAS is the lack of standardized procedures for separating aircraft and communicating with ATC. In preparation for adopting unmanned flight operations into a complex control system, it is important to identify solutions to effectively control UAS in the NAS. The Joint UAS and ATC Team (JUAT) group has designed several simulated ATC scenarios in order to determine effective solutions for integration. Through the use of digitized radar display overlays that replicate the military grid reference system (MGRS) in conjunction with traditional airspace sectors/boundaries the JUAT is able to simulate UAS operations on a basic level
