The phenomenology of remembering is an epistemic feeling

This paper aims to provide a psychologically-informed philosophical account of the phenomenology of episodic remembering. The literature on epistemic or metacognitive feelings has grown considerably in recent years, and there are persuasive reasons, both conceptual and empirical, in favour of the view that the phenomenology of remembering—autonoetic consciousness, as Tulving influentially referred to it, or the feeling of pastness, as we will refer to it here—is an epistemic feeling, but few philosophical treatments of this phenomenology as an epistemic feeling have so far been proposed. Building on insights from the psychological literature, we argue that a form of feeling-based metacognition is involved in episodic remembering and develop an integrated metacognitive feeling-based view that addresses several key aspects of the feeling of pastness, namely, its status as a feeling, its content, and its relationship to the first-order memories the phenomenology of which it provides

Rupture ductile d'un acier haute résistance X100 pour transport de gaz naturel : caractérisation et simulation

    No full text

Unified constitutive equations to describe elastoplastic and damage behavior of an X100 linepipe steel

International audienceThe deformation and fracture of the high strength steel which is used to fabricate grade X100 steel pipe were investigated at room temperature, on plate and pipe. Anisotropic behaviour was characterized by using tensile tests conducted along different directions. The fracture toughness of plate and pipe materials are compared using compact tension (CT) and Charpy V-notched tests. In both cases, these materials give rise to good fracture properties. The aim of the present study is to establish unified constitutive equations able to describe the elastoplastic and damage behavior of one X100 linepipe steel. The model is then used to simulate three point bending and compact tension tests

Recurrent boosting effects of short inactivity delays on performance: an ERPs study

Abstract

Background

Recent studies investigating off-line processes of consolidation in motor learning have demonstrated a sudden, short-lived improvement in performance after 5–30 minutes of post-training inactivity. Here, we investigated further this behavioral boost in the context of the probabilistic serial reaction time task, a paradigm of implicit sequence learning. We looked both at the electrophysiological correlates of the boost effect and whether this phenomenon occurs at the initial training session only.

Findings

Reaction times consistently improved after a 30-minute break within two sessions spaced four days apart, revealing the reproducibility of the boost effect. Importantly, this improvement was unrelated to the acquisition of the sequential regularities in the material. At both sessions, event-related potentials (ERPs) analyses disclosed a boost-associated increased amplitude of a first negative component, and shorter latencies for a second positive component.

Conclusion

Behavioral and ERP data suggest increased processing fluency after short delays, which may support transitory improvements in attentional and/or motor performance and participate in the final setting up of the neural networks involved in the acquisition of novel skills.</p

    Detection of interstellar hydrogen peroxide

The molecular species hydrogen peroxide, HOOH, is likely to be a key ingredient in the oxygen and water chemistry in the interstellar medium. Our aim with this investigation is to determine how abundant HOOH is in the cloud core {\rho} Oph A. By observing several transitions of HOOH in the (sub)millimeter regime we seek to identify the molecule and also to determine the excitation conditions through a multilevel excitation analysis. We have detected three spectral lines toward the SM1 position of {\rho} Oph A at velocity-corrected frequencies that coincide very closely with those measured from laboratory spectroscopy of HOOH. A fourth line was detected at the 4{\sigma} level. We also found through mapping observations that the HOOH emission extends (about 0.05 pc) over the densest part of the {\rho} Oph A cloud core. We derive an abundance of HOOH relative to that of H_2 in the SM1 core of about 1\times10^(-10). To our knowledge, this is the first reported detection of HOOH in the interstellar medium.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, new version corrects a typo in Table 1 (and consequently in Fig 4

Promoting safety teaching: An essential requirement for the chemical engineering education in the French universities

    Get PDF
The essential contribution of education to safety and loss prevention is emphasized in this paper. It provides a review of the chemical engineering undergraduate and graduate French curriculum “Process safety”. First, the specific situation of the French chemical engineering departments is situated in the Bologna Accord. Then the three main ways to teach occupational health, safety and loss prevention in chemical engineering cursus are discussed. The principle of a layered approach is reported with the corresponding levels of outcomes, competences and safe work practice expectations. The content of the undergraduate safety mandatory program of the French University Institutes of Technology (IUT) is indicated for the concerned chemical engineering departments. Finally, some selected detailed lists of the different safety mandatory and elective courses concerning the corresponding French Master degrees (topics – time allocation and European Credit Transfer and accumulation System ECTS) in two Chemical Engineering Schools ENSIC Nancy and ENSIACET Toulouse are commented

Substrate-controlled allotropic phases and growth orientation of TiO2 epitaxial thin films

International audienceTiO2 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on a wide variety of oxide single-crystal substrates and characterized in detail by four-circle X-ray diffraction. Films grown at 873 K on (100)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 were (001)-oriented anatase, while on (100) MgO they were (100)-oriented. On (110) SrTiO3 and MgO, (102) anatase was observed. On M-plane and R-plane sapphire, (001)- and (101)-oriented rutile films were obtained, respectively. On C-plane sapphire, the coexistence of (001) anatase, (112) anatase and (100) rutile was found; increasing the deposition temperature tended to increase the rutile proportion. Similarly, films grown at 973 K on (100) and (110) MgO showed the emergence, besides anatase, of (110) rutile. All these films were epitaxically grown, as shown by ' scans and/or pole figures, and the various observed orientations were explained on the basis of misfit considerations and interface arrangement
